Here in the U S I first heard of Billy Connolly about 25 years ago. I heard a CD of poetry in which Mr. Connolly read The great poem To A Mouse by the great poet Robert Burns. This reading , in the Old Glaswegian style, was beautiful to my ears. Thank you Mr. Connolly for making my life a bit better, and imho the world a bit more beautiful. Now if I could only learn to talk like that...

There are a few bits I find amusing. If you fancy reading a long comment, some of you might too. The rest is just reflections. It will seem strange to many now that declaring lack of belief could be so badly received. But I am old so I remember it being so. I remember being asked to bring over a story book at primary school, coming back with the bible and nursery rhymes, evidently viewing them as equivalent. The next few years were spent trying to make me 'understand' god, it didn't go well. It was in secondary school I was first called an atheist. Primary school didn't want to make it seem valid and common enough to have a name. In secondary school a science teacher told me that you cannot accept or dismiss anything without proof. He was why I consider myself atheist by faith. I believe and always have believed there are no deities, spirits etc. I cannot prove this so by definition there is an element of faith. This statement has been received badly by atheists and theists most of my life. I remember finding the definition of atheist very offensive. Lack of belief in a god or gods. As if they must exist I am just too dumb to realise this. The historian in me accepts this as a sign of the times when this word was coined. One difference I noted between myself as a lifelong atheist and the majority my age who are lapsed theists is I am perfectly comfortable in a church. To the point where I was asked to read a piece a friend of mine had written in his church, because I deliver the spoken word well. I was pleased that at the end they applauded him not me. I was less pleased at the critique of my atheist friends who couldn't understand me doing it. As if doing a favour for a friend who had a faith I didn't share was somehow less acceptable than for one without. My respect for different religious groups confuses people. In the UK we have much maligned Jehovah's Witnesses. I am fine with them. They are doing what their scripture says, going out into the world preaching the word of god to homes etc. So I am rarely rude to them. I will debate of course but generally with respect. There was a recent exception, my wife is disabled and there are notices on our door saying this and that we don't want cold callers, specifying religious groups as one we don't want. A couple of Jehovah's Witnesses ignored this and knocked on our door. I answered, looked at the watchtower and before giving them a chance to speak said 'Sorry I will not support any religion that legalises rape in multiple ways. So that eliminates Judaism, Christianity and Islam.' Middle aged woman looked affronted, younger man laughed at which I said 'You have read the books haven't you?' Less funny apparently. Not been back since. I don't believe in the bible but I know it better than many people following it. I wasn't offended by their faith, but their ignorance of notices making clear if my wife was alone it could cause her pain just getting to the door. I give respect to those who show it. Contrast to above, younger days, bedsit land, and late night worker. Asleep but slowly waking when I could hear someone was working their way through the doorbells waiting for a response. They got to mine, I got up, put on a dressing gown and answered the door. Older gent, young lad. Young lad evidently looked at mad biker who'd visibly just crawled out of bed and took a step back. Older gent asked if I had considered my future. I responded in a calm respectful tone. 'I'm sorry. I'm not in the mood for a theological debate right now.' Young lad couldn't match the voice with the person he could see. Older guy looked at him and smiled having clearly seen I wouldn't be threatening. One group I struggle with especially as my Mother seems to have joined their ranks, are creationists. My mother is a born again, not my fault, I had left home. I think it may be the delayed effect of alcohol withdrawal. As a pretty much lifelong teetotaller, I can't be sure. My son is home educated and there is a lot of pressure in the US to teach creationism as a science. So I thought what the hell, do a lesson on it with my son. In the UK not the US but gave it a go. I spent months preparing for this lesson, not solidly obviously but gave it more time than most creationists will give actual science. The lesson itself was hard going. My son is many things, stupid is rarely one of them. I presented the 'theories' of creationism, which have less evidence than most scientific hypotheses. My son argued against them using actual provable facts, arsenic tolerant earthworms who are now a separate species and cannot breed with the more normal species of earthworm they stem from etc. I came back the the pseudo science answers calmly, which infuriated my son. In the end he asked what the primary source of evidence for creationism was. When I declared this to be the bible he came back with a response I wasn't prepared for. 'But the bible doesn't say everything was created, only a few things. Everything else says and god said let there be, then looked and saw it was good. That's more like observing evolution than creationism.' I mentioned earlier that my son is rarely stupid. I realised that was a day I had been. At no point had it ever occurred to me that one of the most damming pieces of evidence against creationism could be the bible itself. If you want to teach creationism to your child, go for it. I had planned an assessment to see what my son knew of interdependency and adaptation, which was the section we were working on. In that lesson he answered everything I had intended to ask him and more, so we didn't need it. For reference my son was 9 years old at the time.

I’m a catholic but fortunately was brought up in Southern England amongst ‘ Protestants’ with an Anglican father , always ‘ non catholic ‘ boyfriends and now with an Anglican husband , so am definitely NOT sectarian, and ironically hate the institution of the Catholic Church , would never have dreamed of marrying a catholic , though I AM still a practising, though VERY liberal catholic ! And my family NEVER watched Billy Connolly when I was younger cos they thought he was’ foul mouthed ‘ and ‘ anti catholic ‘ ! I now find him HILARIOUS !

Billy is anti-catholic as am I. I was born raised and educated as a catholic, and if anything is going to put you off catholicism it is to be educated as one. As I have grown up and learnt more about the organisation, I have grown to despise it even more. And I feel better for making the right decision. So I don't believe in gods, angels, devils, ghosts etc. As far as I'm concerned it's all crap.

Some people seem to be so much more sensitive to ANYTHING nowadays
@Nabium
@Nabium 3 года назад
you don't get it. this was about how sensitive everyone was back then the only difference is what they were sensitive about. back then it was religion and decency, now the values have changed. but human beings have always been and will always be hysterical and suppressive. and seing how you don't get this makes me believe you are just like this yourself, but you only see it when it differs from your values. you don't care when the hysteria and suppression comes from people who you agree with.
@colinremmer2417
@colinremmer2417 3 года назад
@@Nabium I know that he's talking about back then. My comment is that things haven't gotten any better have they? People have always been & will always be sensitive about certain subjects but the range of things people are offended about nowadays seems to be MUCH bigger than back then. Just a quick question, but what about my comment makes you think that I am like this myself? How do you know that my values are or what I'm thinking whenever I write something on here? And don't you think that calling it 'hysteria' is a little extreme? Why would you choose such an emotionally loaded word to describe something as simple as people taking offence? Are you trying to put words in someone's mouth? Or are you simply doing exactly what you accuse me of being? Remember that whenever you point at someone else, you still have three fingers pointing back at yourself

@@colinremmer2417 You said things have gotten worse. They haven't. Maybe it looks that way because of social media, but they certainly haven't. You are allowed to talk and say more things now that you could 60 years ago. If you don't see that, then you have no understanding of how things used to work. Of what people like Lenny Bruce went through. He was arrested five times over things he said in his stand up routine. Mention to me ONE stand up comedian now that has been arrested several times for what he's said. You can't. You can't because you're absolutely wrong on this subject. You have absolutely no understanding or knowledge or perspective on how things used to be like.
@colinremmer2417
@colinremmer2417 3 года назад
@@Nabium You should know that I'm 59 years old so that kind of shows that you are the one who has no idea, knowledge or perspective over what they are on about. People talk about more today because of people like Billy pushing boundaries but those boundaries are a personal choice for people to either adhere to or push through. Things have gotten worse which is why you have children of 7 or 8 years of age complaining about 'stress' because of something that, years ago, would have been seen as totally innocuous. You have young people on medication because they can't deal with anything that's said to them so how can you say that 'things haven't got worse'? You seem to be a person who doesn't seem to have any flexibility in some of their views - someone is either like A or like B but think about it, life isn't black & white is it? You seem to think that you know what I'm like and how I think, etc, but let's be honest - you have no idea

I completely disagree - I think has always been, and still is, clear when something is a joke and meant in jest more than abuse. I think the reason for people “in underpants” abusing other people on the internet is not influenced by comedians telling jokes decades ago, but by the separation of the person abusing from the consequences of their abuse, I can say anything I like on the internet and you still won’t fully register to me as a real person with complex emotions until I truly connect on a personal level with you. The final point isn’t true for me but it is for many many people who are much more vocal than any other group on the internet.
