Iran, officially the Islamic Republic of Iran, is a country in West Asia. Originally the follower of the indigenous pagan faith, the Iranians converted to Zoroastrianism founded by Prophet Zarathustra between 600 BCE and 500 BCE. Many Kurds followed Yazdanism which involved worshipping Mithra the sun god. Iran flourished as a world power in ancient times under several empires like the Achaemenid, Parthian, Sassanid, etc. Under Alexander, the Greeks occupied Iran and brought an end to the Achaemenid rule termporarily Hellenising Iran and Iran was then liberated and made Zoroastrian again by Parthians. Many Persians became Buddhists during the Greek and Parthian eras. The Sassanian Empire persecuted most minority religions and established Zoroastrianism as the strongest faith. Many people especially Armenians and few Kurds became Christians during Sassanian rule. The Arabs captured Iran by 654 CE and most Persians were forced to accept Islam, and Sunni Islam in specific. A large number of Zoroastrians fled to other countries like India and many were also killed in communal violence. Many Iranians were killed or died because of famines and poverty during the Mongol invasion of Iran and many also died in the Black death followed by it. Iran remained a Sunni Muslim majority country till the Shia Safavid Empire took over. Iran flourished again under Safavid and later Afsharid rule. More than 90% Sunni Muslims converted to Shi'ism in a very short time. Iran was a secular kingdom under Pahlavi rule till the Islamic Revolution (1978-79) which ended monarchy and made Shia Islam the state religion of Iran. A large number of liberals started becoming atheists then after. Today Iran is the largest Shia Muslim country in the world. Still most Kurds and Balochs in Iran are practicing Sunni Muslims. The Kurds in Iran other than Islam also practice several ethnic religions like Yarsanism, Yazidism, etc and there are many Christians in Iran too. Only a small number of Zoroastrians have survived in Iran now.
