Be sure your next purchase is a decent reloading scale, The lee dippers work well, but with a fine powder like 4756 the weights can vary from dip to dip. Try not to tamp the powder in the dipper. Do a smooth dip motion, then scrap the extra off the top with an old card or the back of a knife. Just some tips. I love the lee loaders, I'm going to buy one for my 45-70 soon.
Thanks for the advice. I didn't tamp the powder. I scooped then tapped the scoop to knock the extra grains that were sticking to the outside off. Is that okay? Or should I not even do that? One question I have, how do I know for sure I've done the crimp right?
OzarkNick As long as you scrape the excess off the top, then tamp, and not add more powder you are fine. As far as crimp goes, it all depends on how hot of a load you are shooting. The hotter the load, generally the more crimp you'll need to hold the bullet in place in the shell during recoil. If you are shooting a mild load, then you only need to crimp until you just see the edge of the brass being tapered in to the bullet. I'm off the next couple days and will do a video showing how much crimp I generally use. Were those just 158 grain semi wad cutters you were using, as far as projectiles?
Seeing your videos has made me get another model 85!! It's a blued model, picking it up soon. This will be the third one I've owned and I tell ya you can't beat them for the money. Accurate little buggers too, I used to be able to shoot cans at 25 yards with mine all day long for fun!
If I want to make rounds that have low report, and lower recoil, do you just use 1/2 of the scoop dipper? Or is that a bad idea? One reason I’d like to make bullets is low report, recoil.
Yes. The Scooper Method is based on a Chart, showing Bullet Weights & a specific Powder to go with each Weight. Basically you Scoop, shake Level, & Pour.
So what brand of smokeless gunpowder do I get since there's so many kinds on the market and does it matter or shall I say what do you use ? I 'm thinking of getting loading kit just like this one in .38spec. and .45colt !!!!
It absolutely matters what components you use. Get the kit first, then read the load data provided with the kit to determine which powder you want. Select the bullet grain size you want to use, then find that on the sheet, select the velocity you want and there's the powder...It's quite limiting with just the kit alone, you're limited to what they list on the load sheet due to the powder dipper, but the good thing is every load they list on it is one full and level dipper scoop...just don't accidentally mix your dippers up if you get the .45 and 38 kits together!
So you didn’t resize that case , you left it hanging out of the die body . This type of reloaded doesn’t size case completely to begin with . Why people who don’t really know what they are doing would make a video about it baffles me .
