Reloading 577/450 rounds for my 1887 Martini-Henry, using 480grn lead bullet and 85 grns of black powder. The bullets I use I cast myself using pure lead in a CBE 456-480 mold. For more details on paper patching see my video "Paper Patching bullets for my 1887 Martini Henry" on my RU-vid channel.

Mark - i've come to this video late (2022) but have to say I enjoyed it very much. The way it was filmed, the simplicity by which you explained each step, the straightforwardness (so many videos are filled with anecdotes) - really helpful. Am about to reload for a MH MKIV and also an Artillery carbine (in the lighter bullet). Having watched this am obviously off to now watch the paper patching video! Thank you for putting your passion, interest and effort both into making the video and into shooting! Finally - a closing point for your UK subscribers: FIGHT THE PROPOSED HSE BAN ON LEAD FOR USE IN HISTORIC WEAPONS - utterly futile legislation. There is not an 'alternative to lead' for rifles that run on lead!

I was very impressed Mark with the cleaning that your Vibrating cleaner did on the Brass. My own does nowhere near as good a job.....must be the different cleaning solution?.How often do you anneal your brass?
@MarkRobinson555

Peter Martini Hi Peter, thanks for the kind comments, with the brass i just use corn cob media, actually lizard bedding, and a bit of car polish, but it does take a few hrs. Only ever annealed once, so i would say very infrequently. Good shooting!

Sounds like someone at the range doesn't like shooting next to someone who has a muzzle brake on their rifle ! I can understand why though, depending on calibre the pressure wave can be quite off putting if you're to the side of the offender.

Lee makes a set of dies for this cartridge. The sizing die will also punch out your old primers. Any particular reason you don't use those dies? By the way, happy to see a Brit keeping the flame alive. Keep shooting!
@vernejenkinson8095
@vernejenkinson8095 2 года назад
As long as you're using fire-formed cases in the same rifle neck sizing is all that's required. In addition, the Lee 577/450 dies are well over $300 whereas the 480 Ruger dies can be had for around $40. One more thing to bear in mind is that the Lee 577/450 dies have a 1.25" thread diameter which won't fit into an ordinary press which will only fit 7/8' diameter dies like the 480 Ruger..
@mtacoustic1
@mtacoustic1 4 года назад
Instead of using cotton filler, just use a greater volume of black powder. The pressures will remain much the same and you won't have to worry about getting an equal volume of cotton in each round.

Hi Mark, I became a member of a gunclub just 2 days ago I have my first introduction tonight at 7 o clock cant wait. First 1.5 years shooting the.22 etc etc...They asked me what I was interested in to shoot so I said blackpoowder firearms. I have been interested in the Martini Henry rifle for a good 2 years now and everything that comes with it including reloading. So I found your vid on youtube and I found it very interesting to watch, nise and smooth layout from start to end. My question is...what equipment are you using to make a full reloaded Martiny round in total ? And where can I buy this equipment? and what are the expected costs....I saw a lot of tools in your vid...perhaps you can give me a list of what your using exactly. Kind regards, Dane

I just loaded my first rounds. I pushed the bullet too far down on one and had to pull it up. the powder isnt moving but what if there is a gap behind the bullet? and is it possible to pack the cotton too much? i used a lil less than half a cotton ball and i didnt press it in too much i dont think. but im scared to shoot em lol.

@danm7298
@danm7298 2 года назад
@@MarkRobinson555 Sorryi should rephrased that. i just was doing research and couldnt find much definitive info. some ppl were using 457 some 468 some are even using 475! I decided to get 457 and PP cuz the mold and sizer are cheap and available. I didnt see anything besides that. but in the future i would like to get 468 or 475 grooved bullets so i dont have to PP. Im using pyrodex so fortunately i dont need to make grease cookies. I learned a lot in the last day.

Hi Mark great video, do you have any concerns of static electricity whilst using plastics for your black powder? I'm pretty sure the Lee dippers are static proof, but is the funnel and cup? That would be my only concern is a static charge igniting the black powder. A good friend of mine loads for 450/577 using brass drop tubes for powder (volume, not weight)

Fantastic video. Is the need for the wax and paper circle cut outs essential or could you just stuff the casing full of cotton wool? Also, what other waddings could you use? Would newspaper be ok?
@MarkRobinson555
@MarkRobinson555 6 лет назад
Sam Chapman thanks for the kind words. I would say that the wax and the paper discs are important. The wax provides lubrication and the discs separate it from the wading and powder. I have not tried to exclude them, as I have just followed the original load procedures for this round. Regarding the wadding, I and I know others have used foam. You can get lengths of circular foam, cant remember what it is called, but it can be cut to the appropriate length and it worked quite well. I and others have also used semolina powder to take up the air space, with good success, but I know that there are are those who would criticise this saying it leads to a build up of pressure, so I would not recommend it to anyone. Newspaper, not sure, as long as it took up the airspace and didn’t cause a blockage I don’t see why not, but not really sure, so I can’t really advise you. There are a couple of Martin Facebook groups and a Paper patched bullet group you could join, sure you would get plenty of advice! Good safe shooting!
