Reloading Product Review: Hornady LnL Powder Drain Insert

Second "feature" in today's video efforts. Just checked, Up in Smoke was released in 1978. It was a "sneak preview" in our "double feature" a young child could never forget and a father who was probably surprise beyond belief on what both of us were watching! We don't need no stinking badges...
Just like the other video, I was also poking around only this time I was on Hornady's site specifically looking for an update on the Auto Charge Pro (very sweet looking product refresh IMO). Although I didn't find any new news about the Auto Charge Pro, I did stumble upon the LnL Powder Drain Insert.
Normally, when I'm done reloading on my LnL, I'll pull the entire powder measure out (love the bushings), uncap it, turn it upside down and unload the powder into a funnel sitting in my powder canister. Quick and easy, at least to me. Then I blow out the powder measure with compressed air to make sure it's empty.
When I was building the Dillon XL750, since the dies don't easily come out of the tool head, the only way for me to empty the XL750 powder measure was to pull the entire tool head. No big deal. I looked around for a solution similar to what I can do with the LnL. Found EC has a powder measure quick release, but I can't use it because it will not allow me to "lock" the powder measure in place (my "location" issues with the powder bar hitting and jamming on other dies). Another company (name escapes me at the moment) has an "insert" solution that is concept wise identical to this Hornady solution. But, removing the powder bars in the Dillon is a bit more "involved" that pushing a button and swapping out inserts. Involve enough that I'd rather just pull the entire tool head than deal with the insert.
So this video is me testing out the insert. Initially I thought it was pretty decent and gave it a thumbs up, until I later noticed powder (about 2-3 loads worth) on my shell plate. Discovered it was the result of not having an empty case in the powder measure die, just like the old Lee Auto Disk (which I'm a fan off BTW) Powder Measure that once you turn the measure off, you have to empty out what's already in the disk/channel, otherwise you'll spill powder on the shell holder.
Went back in and demonstrated emptying out the LnL powder measure with a case in the powder measure die and all worked out fine. If there would have been instructions or my common sense had been sharper on a Saturday, maybe I could have avoided the mess. Changed my product review from thumbs up to neutral. I think I'll continue pulling out the entire powder measure to empty it. It's worked well and I'm used to it.

I have a Braggin Rights Precision powder measure locking plate plate on my LNL AP press. This plate is great, but pulling the powder measure is not so quick and easy now. So this drain will be a perfect solution for me. Thanks for the demo.

You actuated the measure to install the adapter. At least twice. That dumped the powder.

Doing something for the first time live on video unfortunately catches all the mistakes real time ;-)

I used mine a couple of times, and decided it was more trouble than it was worth, vs. simply pulling the measure out and dumping. This thing would be MUCH more useful to someone using the Hornady powder measure on a non-Hornady / non-Lock'n'Load progressive press, or for a standalone Hornady powder measure, without the Lock'n'Load Hornady stand, i.e. using a shelf bracket or other brand stand, to hold the measure.

Yep did Exactly the same thing the first time I used this. I don't always use it to empty the hopper. Sometimes I still pull the whole thing out...YMMV

I just ordered this. Congrats you are the only person on You Tube that made a video of this product and I don’t think Hornady published any instructions. Couldn’t you have installed it without dumping a charge first? Would it not pop in the down position?

Interesting to know this is a "one of a kind" video ;-) I don't recall any instructions and my video "style" is to do things "live" without practicing first so you can see my trial/error process of learning as I go. As you saw in the latter part of the video, I did manage to "get it right" in terms of process/function.

Did you dump a couple measures of powder all over the shellplate there? Even using this measure on a non LNL press it only takes a moment to detach the measure from the top of the actuation system to dump it. I bought one of these dump units but haven't opened the package and have been seriously thinking about returning it. Thanks for the timely demonstration of how it works. Perhaps adding tubing to it to lead into the powder bottle so it can sit there and take it's time.

I actually prefer my original method of pulling the entire measure and dumping it in the powder can. This was an inexpensive "test" that proved sometimes the best solutions are the simplest.

@@ReLoadersBench I agree. I probably should return it though the return shipping may be too much to bother.

Whats your trick to keeping the static out of the powder measure.

What I've found that works for me on a new powder measure (or powder related device e.g., charging die, powder trickler), I usually throw in some graphite powder and shake it up to give it a "dusting", empty it out and then fill the same measure/die with plenty of smokeless powder and shake that around, then empty it. Good to go from there (again, this has worked for me, so YMMV).
