** Warning ** - Long video as a LOT is covered in addition to the Lyman digital thermometer (my PID, RCBS analog thermometer as well as accuracy of each tool compared to the other).
Stumbled on this new product by accident and decided to pick it up as it was on sale for under $19. Decided to give it a test with my Lee 20lb bottom pour furnace and compare the accuracy of the Lyman Digital Thermometer against my RCBS analog (that cost 2x the Lyman) as well as my PID (that cost a bit more than 2x ;-).
Pleasantly surprised at not only the simplicity of the product, but it's functions as well. For the money, can't pass it up as I believe it to be well worth the investment. Great to double check other tools and their accuracy. The PID is ~1% or so from set temp, but in terms of reading the temperature, they Lyman was right on the money and it's nice to see the level of temperature (even to .1 degree) granularity not possible with the RCBS analog or even the PID.
Cool product for the money and a solid reloading tool/casting investment IMO.

Owning both Fluke products and this Lyman product, it most certainly is not made by Fluke. It's a great value tool however.

you should be able to just set the Lee pot to max and let the PID control the temp. there are also settings within the PID that will control how the target is attained through pulses and how it is maintained. If you havent already check out "johnnys reloading bench" on RU-vid, he gives a pretty cool breakdown on how he built his and set it up.

Thanks for the heads up on "johnnys reloading bench", I'll check out what he has on PIDs.

Nice video I’ve been looking at this temp probe for awhile now My question has to do with the Lee Pot. Where did you purchase the cover you have on your furnace? That’s really nice. Thanks

Could you please tell me the name and make of that PID? Where can I buy one?

The PID was made by a member on Castboolits. His ID is ButterNutZ. He is still active on the site (last time I checked about a year ago), but not sure he's still doing the PIDs as he made mine in 2014. Can't hurt to ask. His work is nice/clean and, at the time (as I no longer have a reason to search), his was the smallest/nicest/cleanest PID in my opinion (and I had been searching for a while as I'm a picky old man).

Was you melting the lead indoors? 😱 they say always have very good ventilation or you could get "lead lung" but I appreciate the video, I think I need that thermometer so I don't melt zinc wheel weights in with the lead ones

My Lyman digital Thermometer stoped reading after a month . I called Lyman. They said they will send me a new prob.

Good to hear they are standing by the product. With anything electronic, I'm glad when things still work after the warranty has expired.
