I had this (friendly) conversation while eye-bleedingly exhausted and unironically I can't even remember what we actually talked about anymore lmao. Animals can engage in war though

Tyler's stream is objectively the better of the two. President Sunday, pros: - Westside Tyler, pros - bunnycam

I feel like Sunday is forgetting that nations can be different than states and nations can go to war, all while having incredibly loose/nonexistent borders because they are nomadic and or follow the animal migrations, etc... Also without maps. Chimps also have the shrine tree phenomena, which may itself be a primitive form of border/landmarking.
@convenientEstelle
@convenientEstelle Месяц назад
But Tyler would say that all nations have borders, if we take his arguments about wolves into account.
@Kon-cw8rw

They get caught up with the word border which is not relevant to the point. Animals do 100% understand zones of control, anyone with a dog knows this.

Don't even need to personally own a dog. There's this dog down the street from where I live that knows _exactly_ where its owners' property ends. They can leave the gate wide open and the dog won't move a single millimeter past the fence. That dog 100% understands the concept of literal borders.

I’m not the quickest person, but don’t most people understand that animals have territories, and that they patrol and defend the boarders of those territories. Sometimes those territories get lost to stronger animals in fights. Humans, as animals, also have territories and patrol and defend the borders, using methods other than pee and teeth. I don’t understand what the argument of bonobos warring over borders is. Is it just the word war being used?

Apes are still monkeys, since primates evolved from the simians (monkeys). You cannot evolve out of a clade. The difference is that apes are a very distinctive group of monkeys and have several unique traits, and we usually mean "tail bearing simian" when we say monkey. It's still technically correct, though :)

It is wild how much of this discussion was dedicated to not defining terms. Tyler seems like his definition of war is, "Organized violence between groups." Then Sunday said, it's not war when animals do it because animals don't have maps. And the other guy said it's not war because experience is subjective and words mean things. Would have been great -- and probably saved a lot of time --if the others put forth their definitions of war.
@MrSilvUr
@MrSilvUr 27 дней назад
"Monkeys don't have borders; they have an area across which they can project control." Isn't a border just the recognized/estimated edge of where a nation can project its control? After watching to the end, it seems like the contention is that apes don't do war because they don't organize because they don't consciously plan. So any mass violence done is essentially driven by instinct rather than conscious effort.

For every thing the beard guy says I have to replay every sentence 10 times only to not at all get what the fuck he is talking about. He will go off on super specific tangents and then almost skip over his actual point with an overly expensive word. This is a type of gish gallop. Because I feel like most of what he is saying is not directly relevant to the argument or to the point that he is making. From 35:20 to 36:12 he is basically just saying that people tend to anthropomorphize which is not an accurate way of viewing the world. I learned this in high school biology class so it is not that profound. But he doesn't just say that, he continues talking about super-specific philosophical concepts that are not necessary to make his point. They actually distract from what he is trying to say and are completely incomprehensible to everyone except the 5 other people who have also read the same book he has. It is the Jordan Peterson gishgallop, people can't argue against you if they don't understand what the fuck you are talking about.

@Westside Tyler this discussion got off in weird directions but they are touching on something important- non-humans do not have or place importance on object-permanence. There is no war. The chimps just keep bumping into eachother when they're after the same thing in the same place at the same time during a percieved shortage. They dont go out of their way to find eachother because the other chimps were never the goal- only an obstacle. They dont have a concept a lasting conflict- they just know coming into contact with really ANY animal, and competing over a resource, will come to blows. The conflict ends at line of sight. There is no concept of a singular event encompassing all these conflicts they can understand to have begun, or end. They dont sit around picking bugs out of eachothers hair ruminating "war, when will it end?" Its just "hey there's another ape over there- and he smells like a bitch. gimme that fucking apple, I'm hungry"

Is there anything more absurd and embarrassing than grown ass people advocating ad nauseum for precision in language over something clearly known and understood by ALL parties anyway, *just* for the sake of proscriptivism, in some weird attempt to protect the integrity of language...a mechanism of communication that derives literally all of its utility by way of being able to change with the times it's in, and the people using it, which by the virtues therefrom PROVE the need for a descriptivist, fluid and changing quality? ... oh wait, yes: arguing against this obvious fact by misquoting AND misunderstanding Shakespeare's clear and impassioned argument for exactly that. I hate Dennis Prager with a firey passion, but i once heard him say something that encapsulates a lot of this video's content: "To believe something that stupid, you HAVE to have gone to college." ... all of that probably sounds especially venemous. I don't really mean it that way. It's just like... that was 70 minutes of a literal argument over semantics when all 3 people came into the discussion knowing PRECISELY what was meant in the first place.
