Thanks, glad it was helpful! I was also amazed when I found it, as no one of the initial 'influencer' reviewers mentioned it. And for me, that's one of the top features

The reMarkable acts like a local web page, it is a neat idea. You can download your files with the button, but you can ALSO drop PDF files on the page and transfer files to your reMarkable. In fact, I haven't even set up a reMarkable account properly, I am using just this local web interface. For security reasons I cannot and will not use a cloud for documents of any kind. Never. I bought the reMarkable 2 after I had confirmed this local ability, otherwise it would be completely worthless for me. Why they didn't just act like a normal USB mass storage device is beyond me... Strange priorities.

But isn’t this still like a cloud? Dropping it on a local Remarkable web page. Like you, I am worried about the security using the clouds and also wish they had a normal USB flash drive type transfer.

First of all, congrats on the content you are making. I came across your channel browsing for some Excel tips n tricks. I honestly don't understand how come that you don't have much more subscribers yet. On topic: I'm a fan of reMarkable ever since it was just a prototype. I still don't have one though, because honestly I don't think that the time I would spend using it corresponds to its pricing. However, I'm still curious on all about it, because it's e-ink, it's different, it's innovative, etc. Could you please tell me if the reMarkable 2 has integrated OCR options in the app? And if it does, does it recognize Cyrillic successfully? Or you have to use another solution to recognize your notes from vector to optically recognized digital text? Thanks ;)
@MintyAnalyst
@MintyAnalyst 3 года назад
Hi there, thanks for your comment. I am pretty sure my follower count is either due to not having a consistent topic in my videos or a conspiracy! :D Unfortunately, the app has no OCR integrated. You can export to PDF and then use whatever you like, which is not ideal... The reMarkable device itself has OCR, which converts to text and only gives you the option to send as e-mail. You have quite a lot of language options here, including Bulgarian. It works pretty well, even my choppy handwriting is 90%+ converted. But it's not a well-developed feature. You can't mark sections of the page to remain as images, so if you have a chart or a diagram, it's completely missing in the converted text. Also, having only the option to send an e-mail makes the whole process slow and annoying.
@roshoivanov
@roshoivanov 3 года назад
@@MintyAnalyst Thanks! Well I guess it depends on the purpose of use. If you only need your handwritten text converted to typed one, sending it to an email doesn't sound to me as an unbearable obstacle. Especially when I already have a Kindle which is everything but user friendly when it comes to uploading own content seamlessly without Calibre, for example 😂 As for the channel, I guess it's the lack of cross platform self promotion, rather then lack of consistency in the topics. You're notably putting too much effort in prod and postprod to leave that valuable content so... unattended 😉 Good luck!
@MikyLestat
@MikyLestat 3 года назад
Seems like the reMarkable is starting a local Web server, so that is not a cloud solution, you are actually connecting directly to the reMarkable and downloading the files from it. That is also why converting and downloading large files is slow, the reMarkable's CPU isn't that strong :)
@MintyAnalyst
@MintyAnalyst 3 года назад
It's a weird feature imo... the remarkable's whole purpose is to be stripped down from any rich features, to get you as close as possible to pen and paper. But then you get this local web server, ssh access... seems like a weird decision on their part :)
@ShawnBuckingham
@ShawnBuckingham 3 года назад
@@MintyAnalyst Local web server and SSH access is because the Remarkable 2 runs Linux. You can make custom scripts and features. Also, the Remarkable cloud is questionable at best. I wouldn't feel comfortable writing down rather important details on it
@MintyAnalyst
@MintyAnalyst 3 года назад
@@ShawnBuckingham I understand its OS is Linux-based, but many devices are *nix based and don't give you admin access, so it's a bit peculiar to me :) No idea about how trustworthy their cloud encryption is, but as a general rule, I avoid jotting down sensitive information, be it in a notepad, or on the remarkable

I'm glad this feature is in the machine without using a hack. One day, the Remarkable cloud will shut down and I am certain it will be shut down before the actual unit itself because useless and stops working, meaning you'll have no way to transfer data. I don't know why many gadgets use this feature seeing as how there's a graveyard of devices already who's cloud support has stopped even within a year or two of launch, which severely shortens the shelf life of the product and makes it's future uncertain. So kudos to the remarkable team for a usb solution, even if it's not exactly as feature rich or ideal as the cloud software.
@MintyAnalyst
@MintyAnalyst 3 года назад
Good part is that if they want, they can easily enable more features as it already has the interface... it'd be great if they do that, maybe as a last update before the cloud goes away :D Honestly, I think they're doing pretty good now, so I expect them to keep it up for a long time

I might not have understood, but does this sidestep the cloud storage then? I ordered the Remarkable 2 because I didn't want any connection to bluetooth or google play (like Boox) or anything else that might compromise security for my information. However, I will be using the Remarkable exclusively for work so I need to make sure I keep most if not all of my notes out any 3 party's hands and I was hoping to avoid the cloud. I really appreciated your video because this looks like a solution for me, but I wanted to double check. TIA
@MintyAnalyst
@MintyAnalyst 3 года назад
Hi Katie, sadly that's not the case. As soon as your remarkable is connected to your wifi, it will sync all files with the cloud. Maybe you can keep it offline all the time and just use the USB web interface to download files to your computer, but this will make many features (like sending e-mails and converting to text) unavailable. Plus, you won't get any updates, so I don't think that's a viable option. If you have someone doing the IT setups in your work, you can ask them to research the encryption and security the remarkable cloud has, not sure if that's available information, or if the support team will answer any questions regarding this. I am pretty sure their dev team is doing all they can to ensure information is stored securely, but at the end of the day, we've seen many 'secure' service leak... My personal solution is to avoid writing down sensitive data, and also regular cleanup of the remarkable. Once you export your notes, and are done with them, you don't have to keep them on the device. Hope this helps :)

Their policies are quite shady. They even state that they can edit and delete your files from the cloud. So if you have any sensitive data - I would suggest skipping their cloud solution and just use the device without an account. The web interface download/upload is great for that. Plus you’ll also get the software updates, so there’s not much you’ll be missing on.
