I hate the temptations tablets and my 2 in 1 laptop have when I'm trying to focus on school or reading a book. I always find that I get distracted. That's why I prefer a discrete non internet connected Kindle for reading (physical books take up way too much space), and use a binder with graph and lined paper for notes. I'm still debating on this, as I can afford it, and it takes up very little space in my backpack and weighs much less versus a binder and Kindle combo. However, the total cost of these items is less than the cost of just the stylus, making it extremely difficult to justify

Oddly enough, this has inspired me to order really good quality pads of paper and get refills for my fountain pen. Because you just can't beat that. Total cost? About 20 quid.

I share the sentiment. Alas, they are two problems: First, whatever your currency, 20 quid for good paper and high-quality ink won't get you far. Secondly, the ability to turn your handwriting (including mathematical formulae) into digital text makes for an incredibly comfortable and efficient "work flow", which is no less addictive than the smooth flow of a traditional pen.

The main reasons I bought the reMarkable: 1) No eye strain from a backlit screen 2) No distractions from other apps / services 3) I was tearing through paper on calls, and now I can save on paper as well as take notes with me. As a use case, I'm using the devices to annotate over my own pre-made templates for work calls & writing music on the piano :)

Same. I like looking at reMarkable’s ads. But I believe if they are cheaper… way cheaper, students would love to get it. Maybe make one that is simple for only taking notes and saving them in clouds without the other features. That’s a go for me.

After having tried it, after paying WAY too much to try it, there isnt much of a reason to go for remarkable apart from just one, and its only this for some of the some, and that is the 'Distraction-free' experience, which I didnt notice on my tablet vs remarkable. I guess for some, a tablet can distract them. Sounds to me more of a personal problem that a $600 function limited tablet wont solve. We'll see if Remarkable is as good as they say they are on their 100d satisfaction return policy?

Remarkable is way better if you don't want distractions, no blue lights to read, a nice and thin note-taker and so on. BUUUUT Due to the unjustifiable price I can't disagree with your conclusion!

Yeah I just bought the iPad Pro. The fact I can draw, take notes, use it as a second mobile screen and use its as a content viewing device is a better deal.

Dear reMarkable- what are you thinking?After all the pushy RU-vid ads, I checked their website out. I was speechless how expensive it is, how cheeky they are by forcing you to purchase add-ons, and how arrogant they seem. Actually reported their ad as misleading on RU-vid. Hope they see this.

I've been a digital note-taker for almost 20 years, bought a Remarkable 2, and am switching back to an iPad Mini. Why/ I need to search my notes for keywords. It was not the price or the subscription. Notes are critical to my work and personal life, so the function is far more essential than cost. I make notes at every meeting, capture action items, draft plan outlines, and keep technical research. I love using the Remarkable, but I need to be able to search keywords within my notes. So I'm back to an iPad and Notability!

I bought an iPad Mini 6 + pencil for digital note taking…and returned it. It was actually too capable, so too easy to distract myself with other apps; no matter how diligent I was. Since then I bought a different e-ink device: Supernote A6X. I’ve been very happy with it. Much like the remarkable it is very limited in functionality, but for what I need it for that is a feature rather than a disadvantage. Yes the iPad is far more technically capable, but there are many people which will find a more limited device for specific use cases more valuable.

For my work 12 to 13 hrs in the field this is a better option for battery life not stopping my flow for the multitude of notes throughout the day and very good for not collecting 30 notebooks per project like i said for me it works and that’s the point.

I do love taking notes and I love that paperlike feel. I have the remakable 2 and the ipad mini 6 and I love them both. The remarkable is my winner for note taking as the paperlike screen protector, for me at least, seems no different at all than before I put it on the iPad mini. I work in IT/Cybersecurity and so I am always making a lot of detailed notes and the remarkable is wonderful for that. I bought it early enough that I got grandfathered in on the connect service for free. I also only bought the remarkable because of an unexpected influx of cash that I got. Had it not been for that influx of extra money I would have never considered it to begin with because it is so expensive.

last week i got my ipad air. and before i even started it. I attached the paper like foil and it is simply indescribable how good the drawing feels.

Within the world of my business clients all share the same setup MacBook Air and reMarkable tablet. I am the only freak with iPad Air as writing tablet and I would never change it. I will however give a go to the glass protector you mentioned!

The subscription model in order to not lose your notes, given that the tablet costs more than the most expensive kindle and almost as much as a full ipad mini, is, frankly, absurd and ridiculous.

In regards to the connect service requirement, you might want to look a bit more into it. You actually can completely download/export your files for free for ever from the remarkable using either the usb connection or open source software. So its not quite as limiting as you said

Mark, thanks for this. I have a remarkable, i purchased it just before they change to the connect option. Those of us the had the plan prior to the connect change got the full connect plan. Whew! Everything you said was correct. The price point was my biggest hartal at the time. I carries at least three note book on a daily basis but I could have used many more. I tried the iPad pro for a little while, but that was not satisfying even after the paper like screen covering. I love the tactile feel of writing and that took many months of youtude watching and reading reviews. With the remarkable 2 I enjoy writing on a digital screen. The price point is very steep and if not for my massive note taking I would have passed. One of the marketing focus points is no interruption when you are writing, drawing, or reading. Which turned out something that i enjoy. My iPad did not offer that unless i ran it in air plan mode. Thanks for your all your content. I have been subscribed for a few months and enjoy you British accent. Keep up the great work!!

I did the same. Gifted my remarkable 1 to a family member, kept the connect service, use the chrome plug in to send things to my tablet, and purchased the 2 for the form factor and love it

Nice video. Thanks for sharing what app you're using for note taking on the Mini v6. I knew it could be one of the two available but was curious. I mostly type notes, and I have no interest in the Remarkable aside from hearing other people's thoughts on them. It reminds me of one of those etch pads for kids you could get for under a dollar where you used a stylus to scribble on it then lifted the top sheet and all your writing would disappear. I loved those as a kid. No wonder I've taken to using iPads. That was my pre-cursor. (Bad pun really not intended!)

I totally agree with your review Mark. I sold my reMarkable 2. For me, It was not worth it for the money. It's a brilliant device to write on but..that's it. And having to pay an additional Subscription is just ridiculous. For the money, you get a lot more for the iPad mini. No, it's not as good for writing on but unless you're writing for say, more than 5 minutes a day, go with the iPad. Also, for me, the reMarkable not being backlit is a deal breaker for me. I've also tried the new Kindle Scribe and also returned. That is as good as the reMarkable and does have backlighting but not as many templates as the reMarkable. That may change with software updates but both Amazon and reMakable need to up their game as iPad provides so much more.

Yeah thats a missed point right there. "More features" is exactly why you should not buy an iPad. Thats the whole reason remarkeble excists. I mean sure its expensive but if I would buy an iPad I've reached exactly nothing. I already have a phone I don't need an iPad.

I went with the Supernote (A5X) for a lot of those downsides you mentioned. Glad I did. The reMarkable 2 could’ve been the best. Big swing and miss on a few simple things.

Excellent review, informative, nicely structured and enjoyable to watch. I'd love to have a cheap version of that which I could use for kindle and kobu books, for Word, Onenote... A special type of ipad would be handy . Though I'll try that screen protector you've mentioned (paperlike).

Good review. I agree, it's just too expensive. Since you must have a pencil it should be included. I have an iPad, iPhone, and MacBook as well as a Kindle. I'd get a Remarkable if it were in the $300 price range. I don't mind side loading apps, books, and PDFs. Even though it doesn't have an email connection, scanning with an iPhone as I do paper is just fine. The price kills it for me.

You can send pdfs of notes by email with Remarkable and include a message. Not truly an email function, however.

LOL 6:30 basically "If you don't pay us every 30 days your stuff gets deleted" is almost as bad as "You can't use your new Audi's air conditioning without a subscription". Apple's iCloud is free and permanent with 5 gigabytes included, free syncing across ALL your Apple devices, free online access from other devices. I'd never waste my time with these nuveau-BS business models that want your dollars *every month* to use features that should be free (like I dunno... SAVING YOUR FILES?) Absolute trash. Remarkable is going to fail just like the rest of them have.

I really want to try remarkable 2 but I'm happy with my ipad mini. As a student with my mini , I can take photos incorporate them with my notes and use colour to annotate and highlight. For the price remarkable isn't offering much for me.

Thank you for this review. You saved me the disappointing surprise of the forced subscription to gain the desired use out of the reMarkable 2 tablet. For the past two years of college I have been using a Gaomon MK10 Pro graphics tablet for note taking with my laptop and was looking to go lighter weight. Hello. I’d like to but Remarkable but heard concerns regarding search function. They say there is no search option ( key words) on the device to find the previous notes taken. Is that true ?

As ever, a very informative review, Mark. I'd been having the ads for reMarkable pop-up on RU-vid recently - I'm starting on the journey of digital note taking too - and was starting to consider one. I watched a few of the presentation on their web page. I wasn't at all obvious about the subscription they charge to access your notes long-term. I ended up deciding to try Paperlike once again. I'd tried it before and, although good for writing, I was a little disappointed by the slight distortion you see (after having Retina displays for all these years, I feel like I'm seeing individual pixels once again). I believed that Paperlike had been updated (maybe the distortion has gone, I thought). I've just this afternoon fitted it and, yes, I can see the distortion is still present! That said, the writing experience is better, so I will stick with the Paperlike - you're review today has really helped we to reach that conclusion too.

Great video, some things I noticed: Remarkable the lag seems disappointing to me. The upgraded pen with eraser seems pointless - it looks annoyingly too slow to erase. Ipad mini screen has a bit too much bounce. I dont see the use of the Connect service, I cant imagine wanting to load up a jpeg of my handwriting, I'd prefer to think of this as a replacement to paper, which requires no digital integration.

From what I’ve heard from my friends the subscription service for the cloud is annoying and with the large price tag that comes along with it with it not being that functional is another issue, if it does get cheaper and reach a good enough price for the functionality it offers I would see it grow heavily

I looked at these for on site note taking and drawing when we were told we could get bespoke hardware for our work (this never happened and everyone got generic cheap Dell laptops!) I also looked at the Surface from microsoft. It's just way to expensive for what it is. Until your video however I was unaware of the subscription requirements as well. I'm sorry, I think there is a place for devices like this but not at this price point and not with the awful subscription model. I'll stick with my a4 paper note pad and pen.

I have tried everything possible to make it feel like real pen and paper but have been unsuccessful. Incredibly frustrated and willing to invest in a device strictly for note-taking. Thanks!

Which Apple note-taking App, comes as close as possible to the remarkable in terms of simplicity and easy handling. (grey backround, low backlit, clear folder structure, checklist templates, pencil feeling, grids & Lines templates) Any idea how to copy the remarkable setup 1:1 to the Apple device?

Hi Mark sorry for bother you. Could you please tell me how you convert what you are writing on the iPad mini to text? I get it on remarkable but with the iPad I am lost. I am currently trying to finish write a novel and I do normally write the first raw draft always on paper but I'd like to go paperless now, and don't have to type all the text back on my computer. I just can’t think of any use case justifies the remarkable. Everything you need to do for notes can be done with the iPad. If you want the paper feel, just use paper and scan with the iPads camera feature in notes.

That they say they want to replace paper entirely, as something of a corporate mission, is asinine considering the environmental impact and cost of production on devices like this is far greater than the amount of paper (which would be used by an average note-taking consumer) in comparison, the beniefit is nil from an environmental/production standpoint. They don't care about the environment, they care about money. Thankfully (for them) people are just foolish enough to buy into it.

Thanks for the technology review, Mark. I found that interesting. I'm not in favor of subscription services of any kind for software. And given that you can buy the big-bezel base-model iPad for $329.00 (retail), and an Apple Pencil for $99.00, the reMarkable 2 seems rather unremarkable. If it was priced at $150.00 including the stylus, then it would make better sense. I've got an 11" iPad Pro with an Apple Pencil. I occasionally use GoodNotes for taking notes. They are very good at updating their software (adding new features, etc.) while charging no subscription fee and (so far) I haven't needed to pay for a new version. And I do think it's worth noting that the very low latency of the iPad Pro/Apple Pencil 2 truly makes this feel like a pencil...even when writing on glass. The one thing you may have sold me on (at least to try it) is Paperlike. I just wonder how much that dims or blurs the screen. But I would like to try it. Also, for background, I do have a Kindle Paperwhite (one of the smaller models). It's hard to imagine it being useful in many situations without the back-light. Same goes for the reMarkable 2.

It's a tough one isn't it, Brad. As for the Paperlike, I actually like (excuse the pun) how it slightly impacts the screen. Doesn't really dull the colours - just adds a lovely matt texture/look. It's definitely worth a shot!

Hi Mark! I'm really keen on the remarkable but I am really worried about a few things... wondering if you could help with the following questions? 1. even without their subscription, can you send the notes to your own email/harddisk? Hi, I received my remarkable 2 a few months, and the subscription is less firm. You can send the notes, save them (as a pdf though) on your computer. The OCR works even without the paid subscription. But even with OCR the remarkable is not searchable. You can attach tags but I don't use them. They are not searchable nicely.

I own both the Remarkable 2 tablet and an iPad Pro. I use the Remarkable at my job as a salesman for note taking. I transfer more important notes as PDFS to the Apple Notes application. This is easily done with the email function on the Remarkable. Alternatively, you can transfer notes from the Remarkable App on the iPad and iPhone. The App keeps in sync with the Remarkable tablet. I primarily use the Remarkable because of its long E-ink battery life. It also works well in most lighting conditions, including outdoors, although I think the tablet would benefit from internal lighting for note taking and reading in low light situations. There is little comparison to be made between the Remarkable and the iPad. Unless you have a specific need for handwritten note taking that would benefit from a device with a long battery life, the iPad is the clear choice. However, if you can afford both, the iPad and Remarkable combine to make a great set of tools. There are interesting competitors to the Remarkable now on the market. However, more important, Amazon has announced its Kindle Scribe, which will be available (at least in the U.S.) at the end of November. It basically adds a note taking function in tablet size to its Kindle reader. That is good news for consumers and bad news for the competition, as Amazon tends to crowd out competitors. It is already boasting a higher resolution screen with Kindle style lighting. Soon, the real choice to be made will be between Remarkable and Amazon. I hope Remarkable can find a way to compete, but it will not be easy.

I ordered the Remarkable last year and was very disappointed with the device. My main complaint was its slowness when working with PDFs. Annotating PDFs is one of the things I do most. It works so much better on iPad (I use GoodNotes). Also: iPad has color support, which is something I missed on Remarkable too. I returned the Remarkable and got my money back.

I think for extensive notes I will stick to paper ( from sustainable sources) notebooks. I’m not sure if I fully understand the need for such a device. Notes on either device are finite, whereas paper feels more permanent. If Shakespeare had written on an iPad would we still have his plays? I’m probably missing the point of your video, informative as always.

I guess it's just each to their own, Stephen :) I've never really 'enjoyed' handwriting, therefore I don't have any affinity to the paper/pen approach. Digital just gets it done for me.

The main dealbreaker for me regarding RM2 is the lack of integration with apps like OneNote. I need all my notes to be synch with OneNote work laptop. Having to save it as pdf and email it…is too much. In combination with the crazy price and the subscription model!!! Also regarding the focus point that RM2 stretch…guess what on iPad there is a focus mode as well!!! RM2 It’s great design but so badly priced to be compared with an iPad.

My reMarkable 2 (with keyboard and pro pen) arrive today. I'm keeping a VERY close eye on the 100 day return window though. I like the distraction free aspects of this device, but also the features you just don't get with a physical notebook; copy/paste, rearrange paragraphs, viewing multiple pages at once, etc. I'm hoping it'll help with writing, design, and brainstorming ideas. And as much as I'm looking forward to trying the reMarkable 2 (or the mini if reMarkable doesn't work out), I'm still a little bit hesitant on this idea: paper notebooks never run out of power or will restrict access if you stop paying a subscription service. You can pick up a physical notebook decades from now and you still have all the data available. But currently all my projects are in Evernote or Scriviner so ... why not a third.. ugh. Truly this thing needs to be amazing, otherwise ipad is where I'm heading next since Evernote has an app for that. It should be noted that perhaps reMarkable heard the customer base and criticism of the monthly cost because it is now (Jun 2023) 2.99 per month after a free year of service. The first taste is free. 8^) We'll see how it goes. Thank you for the review.

@@ashihtaka I returned it after using for a week. At nearly $700 it just didn't feel like a good return on investment. The typing was very fast, much faster than I expected, and the note writing was very clean, but it was big for lap use, yet desktop was fine. My main drawback was price and lack of integration with existing systems I use on my computers and the software I have invested time into using for design, writing, and graphics. I was able to pick up an new ipad mini (6th gen) for $400 and a pencil for it for $100. That's $200 less than the full reMarkable setup (minus keyboard but when writing I'm really using my laptop for that). With a paperlike cover it works just as well. As someone said in a video I watched about the reMarkable 2, "reMarkable is charging a premium to shore up your self discipline." That struck me a bit true. I can shore up my own discipline for $200 and I get a more versatile, functional, device in the Mini. Hope this was helpful.

Rm2 is very expensive for me since I am young. I also oppose using paper as I believe it is bad for the environment. What is your opinion here having owned a rm2? Also, if not ipad 2 or 3, what would you recommend for note taking? Thank you.

@@hussainiqbal9623 I installed the paperlike v2 on my mini (yes, I returned the remarkable 2) and am using it now. The feel is similar and a step up from the glassy surface of the tablet and feels very similar to what I felt with the remarkable. For my money getting the mini v6 ($400) and a paperlike glass cover worked for my needs. I still enjoy notebooks, but writing on the mini is a good experience, plus the mini runs apps like evernote, and email, and apples freeform app for brainstorming, etc. It's not exactly the same as a notebook but it feels close enough for the money. The extra functions you can accomplish on a tablet (erase, copy, paste, etc) are worth it to me. Hope this is helpful.

Remarkable are definitely on to something with the concept - electronic note taking without any distractions. It's just vastly too expensive though. Make it £300 with the marker and I'm sure many, many people would find a use case for it. Over £600 all-in though? Nope, that's simply too much for the functionality on offer.

In terms of features I don’t think anyone will ever beat the iPad however as some that really enjoys the feel of handwriting on paper surfaces or similar I am willing to pay a premium to get something that feels similar. The iPad feels horrible with the Apple Pencil even with textured screen protectors, this is where the remarkable just does what it is meant to do. I hope they keep decreasing the price at some point otherwise it will always remain a niche product.

Question: (I can’t seem to find an answer) If the basic no subscription level syncs notes for 50 days and then deletes them, can you within that 50 days get the page of notes out of the desktop app and store it somewhere else? Like Apple Notes, or just on your hard drive? If you can never get the notes out without a subscription, that’s the problem.

I was interested until I heard that price. Add in a basic web browser and organize functions and MAYBE it’d be worth it. But $200 for a glorified paper pad? Lol no. Better to just use a real one since OCR scanning apps have come a long way and are far cheaper.

If the device was like $199 and came with the marker, maybe they could get away with the subscription service. With the price being high and it not including the marker, it becomes too niche. You can put one of those screen protectors on an iPad that makes it feel like paper, and then you also have something that can do everything an iPad can do. For less money.

The subscription model seems like straight up daylight robbery. An iPad, a pencil and a knockoff paperlike is less than 500 quid with so many more features. Paying a subscription for Google drive backup or exporting notes is simply ridiculous.

Brilliant review! I love the look of this device. I’d want to use it as a diary - I write a daily journal, have done for 40 years, but have run out of shelf space! I’d not use it for note taking…….so I’d want storage so I can go back and read what I was up to on this day a decade ago. Two things mean I’ll not buy this device: the weird pricing. If I could simply transfer my diary entries to a cloud store or external drive, then read them on a laptop later, perfect. I don’t want to pay a subscription indefinitely for that! And size - I never write on A4 paper! Not a journal, anyway. The iPad mini is my notebook - perfect size. So, reMarkable looks like a lovely device. Just wouldn’t work for me.

Maybe this device will be great for university students because nothing is distracting from the entire focus on taking notes. But as a device used for daily work will be the iPad with Apple Pencil significantly better in my eyes.

The three main draws I have towards the remarkable 2 is the lack of distractions, and the feel and the form, however, the pay to play is such a turn-off. Additionally, the lack of organizational tools such as searching or earmarks, and calendar connections is a no go. For me, I want to be able to take customer notes, set deadlines and reminders which seamlessly mesh with either PC plug-ins or google apps, making the information available throughout all devices and team members. My business is custom printing, but I can see a huge need in the contractor’s industry where the legal pad is used extensively for bids and daily projects. Having the ability to sync to headquarters where bids and critical information could be relayed instantly would be ideal. For the price, this device falls way short, and it’s a shame because the form factor is really the best solution. Remarkable just comes off as remarkably greedy or shortsighted. Hard pass.

Firstly, I have to say how much I enjoy your channel. Interesting and informative, without the annoying hype some tech RU-vidrs insist upon. That said, I almost fell off my chair during this reMarkable review. I can see the advantages in digital note-taking - but this product is bizarre! My tip to anyone who is thinking of this is: if you don't already have a tablet capable of note-taking, buy a pen and notebook for a couple of quid. QED. You were right to highlight the pricing model and the one- note (see what I did there) nature of this device. Looking forward to more reviews. P.S. I'm a writer and I love the M1 MacBook Air. Best writing device I've ever used. I took your advice on the iPad Mini 6 - also fabulous, for all sorts of reasons. Keep on keeping on! Denzil

My 36 year old self just got re-enrolled in college. I’ve always wanted one but I’ve avoided it strictly cause of the price. I’ve got a 12.9” 2018 iPad Pro that I use for note taking. But it’ll also be my actual “textbook/computer” for online classes, so I’ve been tempted again to get the ReMarkable. But at this point I think getting a second iPad would be the more cost effective overkill 😂

I wanted one until you mentioned the deleting of your notes after 50 days. This is a program written into the app to force you to use the subscription. There is no extra cost or burden on them if you want to store your notes for longer. So why do it other than that reason? I don't like that sort of attitude. If you want to offer something for a price then ok. But my notes are my notes and if keeping them comes with conditions then they can get stuffed. Was going to get myself one for Christmas but I think I'll go the iPad instead.

This post wanders a bit off-topic, but so does most of life. My only reason for upgrading from the old, old, old mini 2, still going strong after 9 years, is that I primarily use it for reading PDF's, and for this purpose could use a bit more RAM. But, it still does the job, and the display is certainly sharp enough. Since I'm not a note-taker, I would essentially be spending 529 euros to do the same thing with a bit more snap. When it comes to reading, as an older person with dry eyes, I find that the determinate factor is not so much the nature of a given screen as simply its size, the smaller, the better. Which is why I would rather have something more modest than a 27 display hooked up to my mini --- unfortunately, and paradoxically, smaller monitor sizes have lower resolution because they're 1920 x 1600. It would be wonderful if someone put 2560 x 1400 into a smaller screen, and given that it would so much sharper, I'm surprised that they don't. (By the way, I share your propensity for small devices, however find that the regular iPhone falls into this category; just right, neither cramped nor unwieldy, and I have small hands.)

@@tamitakea1368 But, they continued to deliver security patches, the last of which was iOS 12.5.5 on September 23d, 2021. So, it was officially good for almost a decade. Contrast that with my Xiaomi phone, which I bought not long after it came out -- the support lasted 2 and a half years. Which is why I then went out and purchased an iPhone.
