Rematch! Ridgid Octane VS Dewalt Hammerdrill Ice Auger KDrill

Round 2 of this test. I staggered holes and days to see if I could get better results than I did the first time. Based on this test, the Ridgid is a beast and held strong. I would recommend both of these drills and based on the price and lifetime service agreement with the Rigid. I think it has a slight edge as the winner. But a very close contest.

Rigid 46 Dewalt 30 Lets do the math if the batteries were switched, might show efficency. 46x5/9=25.5 holes 30x9/5=54 holes Conclusion: I'm not hand drilling those damn holes! Either will do.

GREAT video my friend. This is exactly why I watch every one of your video's from start to finish. Based on our conversation and your recommendation I bought the Octane with 9am battery and run it with my 8" Strikemaster Laser hand auger (And I bought that adapter with the bungee). My buddy Casey M bought the identical setup too. We both love it.

Great test: I would go with the dewalt based on efficiency. Adding weight as a factor you could carry 2 dewalt batteries and drill 60 holes presumably with only sacrificing 1 ounces for the extra battery. This would put you on the map competing with the 40A electric augers on the market, for a lot less money.

I really do like all these new augers how ever I don't think I could ever by a new drill type auger or a new brand name gas auger. Once I have problems with mine I will continue to rebuild it and if it happens on the ice I never leave to go ice fishing unless I have a hand back up. I was lucky and got In my opinion to be the last good ice auger made a few years ago. I would buy strike master until I made the parts for them and they aren't made to last. Plus the price is quite absurd for a drill auger once you add up a drill batteries and the auger. I am a carpenter by trade and I do have multiple name brand drills I could use but they each have a specific job and I can't risk having one break just for me to go play. Thanks again for your tests they are the best ones on the internet.

I’m thinking of getting a k-drill this season. My concern is that the power drills may not be weather proof. I’ve been out on days when the wind made a snow drift around my propane jiffy. I’m guessing I would have to be more careful to keep the drill covered in bad weather.

Thanks. Glad that you had a realist real world do over. As I have said over on another forum many, many times no one goes out and drills 30,40 or 50 holes at one time and one test of a new tool and battery is not a real world test! Batteries need a bit of a rest as they are used, they get hot even in the cold. As far as real world? DeWalt has a 1 year warranty on tool, battery and charger. Ridgid, if you follow the instruction and register it correctly a lifetime warranty on everything!!! Thats a free battery every 3 years if needed! Average life of a power tool lith-ion battery is 3 maybe 4 years depending on brand (your millage may vary). Sad part is ya know how many folks saw the first video and wouldn't even consider a Ridgid and will not see this video?

And if you have ever seen tournament guys on the ice they regularly drill 100s of holes a day with these elec augers.
@markv3294
@markv3294 5 лет назад
There are exceptions to everything! As I said above at “one time”. Would I recommend either of the drills you tested to drill 100's of holes in ice in one day? Never! What most folks are forgetting is that none of the cordless drills or mixers that "I'm" aware of were designed to run a ice auger of any size! Why are some of the drills cutting out after 15 ish holes, to protect the motor and battery. Go to a larger physically sized tool and there is more cooling because of the mass of the tool. Same holds true for corded tools. Ya can buy a pistol grip style 1/2" drill with an 8 amp motor or a "large frame" 1/2"-7 amp drill which has a smaller (amperage) motor but larger physically sized motor which will run cooler and last longer. The dilemma? One is bigger and more expensive than the other! The nearest cordless tool that I'm aware of designed to run a large "bit" is one the mixer style or "Hole Hawg" style tools, but most folks don't want to spend the money for that style tool. Then if one gets the right tool for the right job ya start to hear the complaining of the sucker was soo powerful it hurt me. It threw me to the ground and stomped on me I'll never buy one of those again. I read it all the time, I bought an X, Y, Z brand tool will it work with my A, B, C drill? Personally if "I" was going to drill hundreds of holes in one day it would be with what I use, a Milwaukee Mud-MIxer with a number (?) of either 9 or 12 amphr batteries! Buy the right tool for the right job! :)

we have the kobolt 24 volt drill(not hammer either) with 4amp hr batteries(2) and with 16 inches of clear ice we can get a total of 32 holes. now that is impressive. Keeping the batteries in our coat until needed. And the Kobolt never needs to be lifted for any stopage until battery is dead.. We got every thing including batteries from lowes for 200. If a person drills straight up and down and presses the drill you just fly through the ice and save on battery. Key is straight up and down. Very impressed with the 24 volt kobolt.

Just wanted to update this review. Year 4, with a bit of sharpening I'm still thrilled with this Auger! This is an excellent Auger. ru-vid.comUgkxe0I-fnTUByahTCyStrIBXsesSkQJKn8n It splits to 1/2 size for storage in the warm months and easily assembles for winter use. I can cut holes in less than a minute by and really don't feel the need to ever adapt this to use with a drill. It cuts easily with the included blades (which can be sharpened or replaced as needed) and has held up extremely well through last season, and now for the first cuts of this season. I do recommend this to anyone who asks, and personally prefer this over powered augers. These are quiet, still quite fast, lighter, and don't risk spilling chemicals into our waterways. I plan to do a lot of fishing this year through the ice, thanks to this trusty Auger. The 8" diameter is great for fishing pike through the ice as well.

I have that dewalt drill. And a 8in strike master auger. With the 2 amp hour batts... I get about 15 holes before I have to switch batteries.. that's in 4-6 in of ice.. I do how ever notice that ridged looks more powerful.. as my drill will keep stopping in overload protection as the battery gets low. But overall it works great.. if my dewalt craps.. might try that ridged drill. Good vid!

@nickmocciola611

Does this auger have a 1/4 threaded hole in the middle. If so you can sharpen a piece of threaded rod use a jam not to keep it in place. Thread it in and lock it. I think it needs to be 3 inches long.
@deansikorski6596
@deansikorski6596 5 лет назад
Excellent comparision. Well done. Ridgid is hard to pass up for $199 with a 9Ah Battery and LSA. It is noted by many to keep the batteries warm on the lake. Suppose to increase run time quite a bit too.
@deansikorski6596
@deansikorski6596 5 лет назад
One other thing to note, the Dewalt has a 3 speed gearbox (compared to Ridgids 2 speed), which lowers rpm's quite a bit. That is benificial for ice augering. (even though the Dewalt is only 820 uwo) it draws less amperage because its geared down.

Hey Joe. I have the same Eskimo 8” pistol bit. Last winter I used the Ryobi brushless hammer drill which only met the minimum specs for the Pistol bit. Near the end of the season the Ryobi drill died. That was only using it on thinner ice in the Whiteshell. This year I changed to the Ridgid brushless hammer drill which has lots of power. It would be interesting to test that one too. It's obviously the most popular drill on the ice.

Had to upgrade from ru-vid.comUgkxW1vOBRCMrgTCDEijzpVzDWsgI-Jm2iQv I was using when I ran into a stubborn kick plate that the old drill couldn’t get through. This set along with some new bits got right on through though.

I was just notified by DeWalt that K-Drill augers cannot be used with ANY DeWalt DRILLS. If you are caught by DeWalt, your warranty will be immediately void. Even though K-Drill made videos of using DeWalt drills with their auger, they are misleading. DeWalt drills are not made to be used this way. My own warranty was voided because of this.

What's your point of 15 holes here and there. Just do the test and drain those batteries to see how many each one drills in one shot. U r special.

nighthawk 87 batteries get less power out if u throttle the battery down as fast as u can, if u go slower and break it up u get more out of them.
