A friend of mine in high school used a trackball mouse like a mofo when playing Command and Conquer. It was the only way he could play since he had muscular dystrophy and couldn't move his arm well. The trackball allowed him to beat most people he played at any RTS from that time. Unfortunately he died about 6 years ago due to his md. RIP Michael.

The M570 has been getting worse every year since it's creation. They used to last 3-4 years, then 2 years, then 1 year, now they only last about 6 months! Been having to buy one repeatedly since they came out. The buttons are of extremely poor quality now. I'll bet that is the same crappy quality their "new" model has now.

Try setting it up as a joystick. It works really well for flying games. And if your multi monitor setup is too big to move across, you need to master the snap spin. Place your thumb on the edge of the plastic around the ball and press in on the ball hard. Bring your thumb across the ball like you are snapping your fingers, and take your thumb off the ball. It will rapidly free spin, sending the pointer off and away at several hundred miles per hour.

I haven't opened up my MX Ergo yet, but the track wheel on every Logitech trackball up to and including the M570 could easily be made stepless by removing a spring on the inside. Regarding pointing downward, or going big distances on the screen: after a while you will develop the art of just giving it a measured whizz in the direction you want to go.

They are rated for 10 million clicks, but the 2 dead M570 trackballs that I've had to replace the switches in say otherwise... I just hope they aren't using the same Omron D2FC-F-7N switches in the Ergo that they use in the M570.

I've been using a trackball for about 5 years now, 3 of which were spent on an M570 and the following two on a Kensington Orbit. Kensington has been updating their models over the last decade, and for anyone switching for ergonomic or RSI reasons, I'd recommend a trackball with the ball in the middle, so you're moving the ball with 1-3 fingers instead of your thumb.

Yes! See my reply several posts above. RSI (or RMS as I termed it above) can result in an extremely sore thumb when using the models with a thumb ball on the side. With the ball in the middle, any of your fingers can easily guide the ball allowing you to switch fingers easily if one finger starts feeling stressed. The models with larger balls allow for more precision in small movements while allowing an easy hard fast swipe (using multiple fingers as needed) to suddenly accelerate the cursor to the other side of the screen.

Ugh! No offense, but I don't know how people can find the ones with a trackball in the middle pleasant to us. I like being able to make tiny movements with my thumb without having to move my hand at all.

You can use the M570 with your left hand, though it does require a little more hand movement. Even though I'm right handed, I tend to do a weird combo of M570 with my pinky, ring finger, and some wrist action. My right hand is on the right grip of my xbox 1 pc controller, when I play some shooters. It's odd, but it works.

I've been using a trackball non-stop since the mid 90's and that with thousands of hours gaming, mostly MMO's but quite a bit FPS as well although not competitively generally but I do alright mid pack when I do.

Switched to MX Ergo about a month ago. Spent a lot of time before going for this decision, however do not regret it for a moment. Now returning to a regular mouse feels very weird and uncomfortable. However, I did swap the ball from MX Ergo to the one from M570 as it felt consistently smoother. And the fact that it is not possible to buy the MX Ergo Plus base separately ... Oh, Logitech ...

Well, I have a Logitech MX570 as my carry-around mouse for two years now, and it's fantastic! I have accoustomed to "kick" the ball and catch it to go further distances, to prevent those awkward thumbiness. I usually have Linux on the go, where you can adjust the sensitivity dependent on how fast you are going. Pretty darn awesome.

Protip: you're meant to "toss the ball" with your thumb when you have multiple monitors. You roll it hard and its inertia keeps it going for you. Its kind of an advanced feature people with huge screens love. The other use is you can keep your stylus in your fingers when you're using it.

Because I have seven displays across three machines, an eigth in the form of a jailbroken iPad that tells me what my due dates and project goals are and a ninth in the form of a chromebook running Linux as a frontend for my renderfarm and three machines under the desk and a stylus only gives you 1:1 with a single display and to use a mouse, I have to put my stylus down. Its also VERY uncomfortable if you sit using a mouse for 8-16 solid hours.

I forget why I started using them about that long ago. I do not see the point in having a bluetooth trackball. The cord gets annoying on a mouse, but a trackball? I will probably eventually buy a trackball for my desktop. If you did not know, Logitech needed to stop making wired trackballs because of copyright infringement.

@@drippingwax Good reasons for bluetooth are simply not needing to carry more cords or occupy a USB port with a dongle which if you have a laptop, a shortage of USB is probably the case. Other than those things, no real reason I can think of.

@@drippingwax If you have a PC in your living room, a trackball makes more sense to me. I have a small trackpad on my K400 series keyboard, but I prefer the Logitech M570 trackball as it feels more comfortable to use and with the scroll wheel is a little easier to use overall. The trackball I have is supplied with a unifying receiver, not Bluetooth but it's the same either way.

I've been using the m570 and other trackballs for years, and by years I mean almost my entire life. I've never changed the sensitivity or used mouse acceleration because after you get used to the default sensitivity you start to be able to flick the ball and stop it pretty close to where you're going, even on a wide or multiscreen set up. You eventually figure out how to intuit how fast you have to spin the ball to travel where you want to go. This solves the thumb crunches problem you talked about. I can't use it for FPS gaming but if it's something like POE or MMOs it's actually fantastic. The funny warning I give people who think about buying on is that I've been using a trackball for so long that now when I use a normal mouse for video or graphic editing, my wrist hurts like crazy after an hour of work and if I push through it for some reason, my wrist can hurt for days. My current m570 is kind of on it's last legs so I might give this one a shot. Thanks!

Ahmed, There was just something that was intuitive about it, just felt right for me. I like the ability to put my mouse anywhere on my desk or the arm rest of my chair to use it. I often sit with my right arm parallel to the keyboard to use my mouse, it's just something you can't really do with a conventional Mouse. I've given 3 M570s to family members and they've all started using them.

I would image that a trackball would work nicely for a PC remote if you use a laptop or some other PC for stuff on the TV, like I do sometimes. Having to move a mouse around to select things is bad when you don't have a nice flat surface near you, so a trackball would fix that issue.

I'm left handed. I've been using right handed Logitech trackball mice for 18 years. Then again, every computer lab and shared computer area I've used since 1988 had the mice already set on the right hand side of the keyboard. It was easier to just use the stupid thing right handed than it was to fight for elbow space with the person next to me. On the plus side, at work I can operate mouse and keyboard with my right hand, while I write notes with pen and paper in my left. Left handed people tend to be more flexible. So don't use your handedness as an excuse. Besides, it's fun to let everyone know you're a lefty, then start doing things right handed. Some people's eyes cross as they try to figure how you do that.

I cannot use a normal mouse anymore. The trackball is much more precise and ideal for drawing vectors and 3d design. (not to mention games. Its way more precise to aim...). I have used the wired from another brand in the early 2000's and now I use the classic logitech model with the blue ball since 2009 and the quality is not so good. The click buttons die too soon and i have to buy a new one each 2 years or so. The surface in contact with the skin becomes glossy... It looks cheap. I wonder if they make an anodized aluminium version with strong click buttons... I would pay more for those.

Ricardo Maggiore yeah the microswitches certainly die after prolonged use, that's the very reason i have gone through 6 trackballs over the past 20 years, however i still prefer them over mice any day. And as you mention, they are great for drawing and stuff; you can move a trackball as much as you like and the cursor stays where you put it. :)

So I have those, but also this Ergo MX Pro. The base on this is FANTASTIC. It is a huge rubberized foot with a solid metal base, lots of weight, doesn't move, and then connects to the actual trackball via magnets. I hated those feet "rubbing" off all the time. This thing won't ever.

I have been using Logitech (thumb) trackball mice since forever. Once you get used to them you can crank the sensitivity way up and still be accurate without any effort. I find that especially at work, where I use 2 or 3 big screens at the same time, it makes going between all that screen space much smoother than with a conventional mouse.

You forgot to mention the best part of track balls!! You can whip the ball very fast! It will easily solve a multi monitor setup(which I use) and infinite spinning while gaming! (Which I also use...) I grew up using all sorts of mice and I always loved using the trackball while doing anything on the computer.(especially gaming like sim city deluxe 4!) And to this day I use the logitec trackball for everything I do. I use the older model when it still said logitec on it. And I love gaming on my laptop while laying down in bed! This makes me want to buy that new one.

I love trackballs I've used them for a LONG time and never looked back. I started with a trackman marble then an M570 now finally have a slim blade and LOVE it for regular use and games. I first got into them as I had a laptop but now I use them on anything.

Once you get used to a trackball, you'll never go back to any other pointing method. It's like having an arm cast removed that you didn't know you had. Trackballs are liberating. Oh, and I use mine across two 1080p displays with no speed issue and without excessive thumb movement.

I use this exact model, 2 of them, on 3x 1440p monitors, it's not difficult, but I have been using trackballs since I was 12. Its second nature to me, cannot stand using mice.

Been using trackballs for 21 years now. Won't go back to a mouse ever. I use them on multiple 1080p screens, a 2K screen and a 4K screen without issues. Once you get used to it, you learn to use little flicks that cover the distance with little effort. My thumb moves more using my smartphone than my trackball. Gaming's fine on it, just takes a bit more practice, but you never need a mouse pad. Honestly my right arm would probably be completely useless at this point had I kept using a mouse.

I'll have to give this a try, since I'm always annoyed that I tend to move my mouse right where when I go to type, my right arm usually rests. This way I can keep the mouse off to the side of the keyboard and never stray in front of it

I had a trackball mouse like the firs one that i picked up at a goodwill. I wasn't sure what to think of it at first but after I started using it for a while I fell in love. No longer did I have insane wrist pain after using the computer for a long time plus I could basically lay my hand however I wanted and it would still work. I've wanted to get a new one for the longest time but they're all so expensive.

I've been using M570 for about a month now. I must say I use that over my G603 for regular use because of how damn comfy it is. I'm also perfectly adapted because I could play CSGO with this thing now lmao so yeah. I definitely recommend having a secondary mouse like these because you'd just love it once you start using it as your daily driver.

I've used a track ball for YEARS. Gamming and for daily computing. I LOVE IT. The only stipulation I would say for someone trying one is NOT to get one with that tiny little ball. The bigger the ball the better. Man that comment is open for some serious flaming. LOL But it is a serious comment.

I agree! While I have used trackballs exclusively for 25+ years, the Logitech models with the small thumb balls gave me serious rms - my thumb got so sore I couldn't use it for days. The only Logitech trackball that I found usable was the one briefly shown in the intro to this video, with the ball in the middle and the buttons on either side. I used this model for many years at both home & work. Unfortunately, Logitech discontinued it, and worse, never released a wireless model! For the last 15 years I have used the Kensington Expert mouse [trackball], and for the last several years the wireless version. However, I would switch back in a heartbeat to the Logitech version with the ball in the middle if they came out with a bluetooth version! It is much smaller and lighter than the Kensington model, which is rather large and heavy for portable use.

mine kebab Yea, I have the Kensington Expert 4 button at home which I game with mostly. At work I have the Kensington "Orbit" Optical trackball but they gripe at me when I wanted to game at work so I actually have to do work. :-(Don Paul Beletsky You and I used the same ones. I find they take about a week to get use to, but once you do you never go back. I've gotten my wife and daughter hooked on them too. My wife love it because she can use her laptop on the bed and not have to worry sliding a mouse around. My daughters broke and she couldn't raid in her WoW group because she was fighting with a temp mouse she had until her new trackball showed up..lol.

Personally I don't like them. I mean, I do like them, but the RSI from it was sucky. I got RSI in my thumb after a few years - but then I was on the PC 8+ hours a day. Maybe I'll buy one again.

@5:17 there's also a setting in-game shown @6:41 to turn up mouse sensitivity so you can whip your view around much faster than this guy playing at 25% mouse sensitivity. It works for all mice, not just a Trackman. Crank it to 100%

One of many capabilities of this genius device is that you can easily use it when you are in bed, no problems with the surface because you need none, and no problem with lack of space... also... you can say: "I'm playing with my ball under the blanket" not many things you can do under your blanket without people noticing... also the vertical mode...well just put a friggin anything like a pillow under it and you have it at an angle... good, very good tool.

I actually loved the Microsoft Trackball explorer. I still use and one new in a sealed box I bought because I loved it so much. But the main reason I love it is cause the index finger interacts with the ball.

I had one of those when i was younger... Best trackball ever. Games like WoW were insanely comfortable and even shooters like UT2003 were pretty good on that thing. Only thing that annoyed me was that u had too clean the ball quite often, especially in summer when u might have sweaty hands.

microsoft trackball explorer was/is the best trackball ever envisioned. i had mine for a long time, and was kinda bummed when it broke down after more than 15 years, the tracking sensor just stopped working. by then it was no longer been sold , and i couldnt get my hands on one for a reasonable price anymore. i should have bought 5 back then.

Fantastic trackball. I recently rebuilt part of mine using a cannibalized Dell mouse using some pictures from a Japanese page outlining the process. Thankfully I haven't had to replace the little bearings yet. I keep mine around for mame and the occasional fps. And don't use the sensitivity settings in game for those who want to whip around with a slight twitch. Set it way high on the mouse control panel. At least that was the way I did it with Quake 1,2, and UT. And it was a joy to use on games like Total Annihilation and Age of Empires.

I have been using the trackball for years I love it! started with wired and now switched to wireless. worth it! except it doesnt work too well with usb 3.0 ports. Hope the new version works fine but I don't need a new mouse yet.

They should make it to where the sensitivity changes depending on how hard you’re pressing the trackball. Lighter press means higher sensitivity (you can glide your pointer across the screen) and harder presses for less sensitivity (aiming and text highlighting). They might already have this feature, but idk

Just got the M575, I tried both at the store, the M575 is definitely more comfy for people with smaller hands, though it's slightly different in features I believe. The tip that you don't need much space, helped me a lot, I've started using the trackball to play games while chilling in bed because you can totally do it since you don't need to jangle it around like a mouse.

I've neen using a trackball for more than 25 years; in fact I just recently stop using the first one you showed in your intro picture, the beige one with the red ball, they realy last! Switching to a track ball is a question of few hours of usage before it becomes a second nature. I also have a CAD designer friend that love it for its precision. And you said it clearly, it takes little space.

I've primarily used a trackball for over 5 years, (actually the one with the blue ball shown near the end of the video) I love it! To me it solves one of the major problems PC gaming can have: gaming from an easy chair or couch. I don't want to be moving a mouse around on the arm of my chair. Logitech's had that one out for a long time, they've just switched the icons at least once.

They are awesome aren't they. I can't stand touchpads or conventional mice after being spoiled by the M570 since the late 90's. So wonderful for CAD vs a standard mouse. At least the logitech units I have from the late 90's appear identical to the M570 and operate exactly the same. Red ball instead of blue.

They are fantastic, especialy with the adition of X-Mouse to configure the extra butons (I use MouseGestures so don't need the back-forward functionality) and MarbleScroll to enable horizontal scrolling.

I have been using a trackball since the early 2000s for gaming. A lot of my friends couldnt see how I was doing as well as I did, using one. Just yesterday I picked up the Logi MX Master 3, and its the first mouse I have purchased since I went to trackballs. Somewhere around here I still have a "vintage" MS Trackball Optical lol. Sadly no one else really makes them, besides Logi. I have the crappier M570 which I am going to keep as a backup.

They are worth hundreds if not thousands to the right collectors. I got a 570 back in 2011 when they first started rolling out the wireless trackballs (before that i had the wired version with the red trackball). My only complaints about the trackballs is that the ball itself and the rollers inside the ball get gunked up the same way that the old ball mice used to.

The ball pops right out of the 570. Only takes a few seconds to knock the gunk of the three points and pop it back in. The only thing I don't like is that it moves way too freely right after you clean it. It takes a while to build up just enough to have a little bit of resistance.

I've had 2 M570s. The first one my wife made me get rid of it because she couldn't figure out how to use it. I got another one a few months after we split up. I've had it for 5 years now. Meanwhile at work, I'm on my 3rd standard laser pointer drag it across the table mouse in a year. Stupid things are only good for scraping dust off my desk.

The Ergo almost completely solves the gunking problems of the 570 with it's more closed ball design. Been using the Ergo since May. It's great!

Kept replacing the M570 because the buttons broke (not an uncommon problem). $100 vs $20 is a lot but it does feel much nicer. The buttons are rated to a much higher endurance but, honestly, seem about the same. We'll see how long it lasts.

I've been using the same M570 at work since 2009. I use it quite a bit for 3D design work and it's showing no signs of wear other than the logitech logo on the palm rest fading away. Easily the best mouse I've ever used. I have no plans on ever going back to a regular mouse.

It's not the actuators in the mouse buttons (though those are cheaper than on other Logitech mice), it's the design. Gunk gets in really easily. Replaced my third one, was looking at videos for a DIY fix, found something about cleaning it - didn't even have to open it. Just an old toothbrush with some rubbing alcohol, clean the cracks between the buttons DEEPLY, good as new.

I started my gaming with a trackball, one that you moved the ball with your index finger, and it was huge so fine movement was perfectly natural as well as wide movement. I think I was actually a much better gamer with that thing, but I haven't had it or used another in like 16 years now so... We'll have to see

My first trackball was a Logitech Trackman Model 4095, still have it even though it doesn't work anymore. I still use a trackball, a Kensington Pro Fit Ergo Vertical Trackball.
