Another sad loss today as we remember The New York Times fashion photographer Bill Cunningham.
Bill is best known for his regular NYT features, On The Street and Evening Hours.
Bill's editorial styles featured fashion curation, writing and of course his trademark street photography style.

I saw a documentary on Netflix about him and he was asked questions about his life etc. From what he said he seemed to be a nice person very dedicated to his faith, work, and employer, and a man who deeply reflected on ethics, and how to live and treat others with dignity and respect all while having a passion for fashion and how to present it through photography and in words. I found him to an interesting and inspirational person since he was able to mix his talents and passions together for a career which he seemed to love. I think he was quite unique in many respects.

I studied fashion right after high school and I pored over magazines and papers over and over again, meditating on and getting inspired by his images. He was such an amazing individual, he made me happy everytime I saw his smiling face. I've watched the doc on him and have looked at it from time to time to get inspired by his dedication to his craft. I never met him but boy did I love this man He'll continue to inspire me for many years to come.Thank you so much for posting this. May you rest in peace, Bill. We'll never forget you.

Thanks for making this Ted. Bill was not your usual photographer, not a street photographer not a traditional fashion photographer. His work pushed careers and movements in both photography and fashion while self-declaring that he's not a photographer. Beyond that, he was a unique individual with ethics and passion that were far outside what is understandable by many people. I think he's a great example of finding something you love and letting that be your source of energy and inspiration. He let nothing cloud that source. Money, fame, luxuries of life, nothing was as important as his quest to find beauty in this world. To have such admiration for the world, you have to have that within yourself and Bill certainly did.

Like you say Bill was quite unique. A charming man that used the camera as a tool for getting acquainted with what’s really going in the fashion world, on the street level. As single images, his works doesn’t really stand out but when you put them as ‘series based’ displayed in the manner that they were printed - the effect is stunning. Thanks Ted - and thank you Mr. Bill Cunningham for showing us who you were. You left behind a body of work that ‘matters’ in the ‘social documentary’ world.

Thanks Ted for your thoughts and commentary. I really enjoyed watching the documentary with you here in Jackson. One thing that strikes me about that video was Bill`s love for life, its simplicity and his ever present smile. He really loved what he was doing and producing.

Bill was one of the reasons I started Photography and why I want to go into Fashion, my heart literally dropped when I saw the title. I would have loved to meet him too, I know he got offended a really nice high end apartment and he felt like he didn't deserve it, he never took a pay check and aw man I loved his passion for Photography, such a great loss

After watching other of your clips I was compelled to re-visit Bill Cunningham's work; you pay him a great tribute. Bill Cunningham's approach to photography is, to me at least, remarkably similar to what Norman Rockwell has done for illustrative art. Not merely a career, but an entire life spent developing a creative passion that has been shared with the population at large. One of a kind? Probably. But its also good to hope that there may be another Cunningham or Rockwell waiting in the wings.

Hope you appreciate your father mr. F. I say that as someone who certainly appreciated my father who was a photographer and M. Sc. - E and my grandmother who was a painter. But I feel there where certainly questions I never asked or stuff I could have learned or commented on that would have strengthen our relationship in that dimension. But I never did it because they "had always been there" and seemed kind of normal and mundane to me. And hey, "you could always ask". But always isn't forever. You certainly know stuff like that intellectually but it seems you never truly understand it until it's too late.

Bill Cunningham's niche made it ever popular because everything he published was a fresh as the ever changing styles and also revealing the difference between fashion house & individual style, now his work becomes fully historic and hopefully will be referred to for ever when a certain time needs to be studied. His night shots of the rich at play are also priceless. So if your ever out on the street and people say what are you photographing that for? Just say, in memory of Bill.

Often, at work, people will say something like, "Anybody could have done that." My response is, "Yeah, 'anyone' could've done it, but nobody did." I'm not sure what level of interaction, if any, that Bill Cunningham had with his subjects (and, if he did have interaction with 50% of them, just getting people in NYC to "stop", (take 5 minutes) and, 'go stand over there, in the sunshine, by the loading dock', is a talent in itself. I'm middle-aged now, but I can remember buying The Sunday New York Times, mainly to see his work, back in the early 1990's. I am assuming that the Times paid him. If so, the guy had a DREAM job.............walk around NYC and attend fashion shows all over the world, taking photos. 'Anybody COULD have done it, but to my knowledge he was THE first, or certainly, one of the first, to get paid to this type of work. Was he the greatest photographer of the 20th Century? I don't think he was in the top 100, but again, kudos to him for finding a way to get paid to DO it.

Thanks for the content. I don't know if it's intentional or not. Your head is closer than your body to the camera and this has distorted your face.

It`s interesting that, even if he was a famous photographer, he used an entry-level DSLR. I think we should think twice when we decide to buy expensive cameras to take 'better' pictures... IMHO
