You are bang on the money with your assessment about the show having run its course when Shelley arrived. I remember she got so so so much flack in the press for being a bad actress and being the main reason that the ratings were sliding for season four. In fact she was a perfectly competent actress. The show did her a massive disservice by not actually writing any scrips specifically for her new character Tiffany. They literally just used tithe scripts which had been written for/including Sabrina, and simply substituted Sabrina for Tiffany. She never really got a chance to establish herself in or as her own character. With the benefit of hindsight it is incredible just how beautiful and classy she was. Always thought Shelley got such a dumb deal.

I would consider the first three seasons as the Golden Age of Charlie's Angels. Farrah Fawcett leaving the series didn't really affect it that much, But once they lost Kate Jackson they were never able to find the right cast to keep the show going. Still, I would describe most of the episodes as being good, a lot better than some of the programs that are on today.

I loved this show!! I have it on DVD and watch it still on cable. Cheryl Ladd will always be my favorite angel but I also loved Tanya Roberts too... I'm happy I grew up with this show.
It's funny that you uploaded this video now as I introduced some young people to Charlie's Angels yesterday and, aside from the very dated concepts of the show, they were mesmerized. The boys ranged in age from 17 to 22 and they reminded me of my feelings towards the show when I was that age. Luckily, they're planning on watching all the seasons, once they get it so I'm hoping they have questions and comments. Thank you for putting this all together, Dave. It's very appreciated!
I've never understood the whole Farrah phenomenan thing. Kate Jackson was the best of the originals imho. Certainly the strongest and the leader. Her leaving had the biggest impact. Farrah leaving gave us Cheryl who was a far better character. My favourite remains Shelly Hack she was just gorgeous.
Looking back, the original Charlie's Angels had a classic old Hollywood glamour to them. Farrah was a modern day Jean Harlow, beautiful and funny, Jacquline was like Rita Hayworth, sultry and passionate, and Kate was like Myrna Lloyd, cool, classy, and highly intelligent
No need for me to post, because you said it for me. After Farrah Fawcett blew up in Season 1, and then left, that show was headed for destruction. Cheryl Ladd came in and saved the show, but never got credit for it. In fact when Farrah came back part-time in Season 3, she and close friend Kate Jackson treated Cheryl very poorly.

Me too, Lord Greystoke. My favorite seasons are 2 and 3. However, I like seasons 1, 4, and 5 equally. And I liked Bosley and all 6 of the Angels. I'm glad there were more than 3 Angels. It made the show more exciting. It was like having 6 best friends.
What always perplexed me about this show was the Angels could solve cases that sometimes the FBI and other law enforcement couldn't, yet they could not find out who their boss was.
I don't consider them replacement Angels. I feel replacements are actors who play the same character. None of the actresses played the same character. They were all different characters. With Charlie's Angels, I just see it as real life. When someone leaves a job, someone else/a new person comes in. I don't view the new people as replacements in real life. The same with the Angels. I just view all the 70s tv Angels as the original tv angels. But thanks so much for giving some recognition to Cheryl, Shelley and Tanya. I love Bosley and all the Angels, and I love all 5 seasons. It's so annoying when Cheryl, Shelley and Tanya are constantly ignored, even though they were a big part of the show, especially Cheryl, who along with David and Jaclyn as the longest running characters, was the heart of the show. Thanks for respecting Cheryl, Shelley, Tanya and their fans.
I think Kate leaving had a more harmful effect on the show than Farrah's departure. In Sabrina they were basically losing the leader of the trio, and that altered the persona of Kris Monroe, the kid sister, who was now in some episodes calling the shots. Just didn't work as well for her character. Such a pity Spelling didn't give Kate time off to do "Kramer Vs. Kramer" as that historically has been cited as the thing that most made Kate want to leave.
Gall ery, both Kelly and Kris were calling the shots. Sometimes Bosley called the shots as well. And it did work. Kris, Kelly, and Bosley were take-charge characters who also called the shots. Sabrina was not the only one. Plus, after years on a job, I think it's great that Kris, Kelly and Bosley are calling the shots. They were not followers or children.
Kate was the best. She was right to leave when Spelling forced her to turn down the role in Kramer vs Kramer. Well Spelling paid the price when Charlie's Angels jumped the shark without Kate.

And Kate was willing to fly to NYC on weekends to do the movie and work on CA during the week! Director Benton said: "In the spring of 1978, we had meetings with Kate Jackson [to play Joanna Kramer]. She was terrific, but the network began throwing up obstacles because of their scheduling for Charlie's Angels. We said, "Sooner or later, they are going to make it impossible.“ Which is what Spelling-Goldberg did. What the Kramer crew wanted and had found in Kate was quote: "somebody who has an enormous presence and skill“. Interesting to think that for a woman like Shelley Hack, there is always a Charlie -- if not Charles Townsend, then Charles Revson, who the Revlon perfume was named in honor of. As for Tanya Roberts, I associate her with some fine memories. She was the original Velda, the faithful secretary, to the 1980s TV take on Mike Hammer, until Lindsay Bloom took over. As for Sheena, it's a silly movie, but I'm a sucker for its romantic theme music. Tanya had amazing eyes, very sharp and bright. And as for Cheryl Ladd, I just get a kick out of her maiden name: Stoppelmoor. So many great troupers, each bringing their unique touch. Thanks, Dave.
I saw an interview with Lee Majors and he finally explained that the reason he wanted to put limits on how long the show could keep Farrah on set was based upon his own TV series experience and he said that as a male actor it was demanding of his time, but actresses had a great deal of more time spent in makeup, etc and he didn't want to see her having to be put through so much time demand.
I grew up watching this show too! I loved Jacklyn Smith the best! She was so naturally beautiful ! And Bosley, I loved his voice! Actually when Tanya was on, I thought her acting was a bit lacking lol

Cheryl was by far the best, as good as any of the original Angels imo. I also liked Shelley Hack, but she was hired shortly before Season 4 began and several episodes had already been written before the writers even knew Shelley Hack's character would be joining the show. That's a recipe for disaster.

Between Kris Monroe and Daisy Duke, it was a great time to be a growing boy. Coincidentally enough, I married a Kris and we had a bloodhound named Daisy.
I actually like the episodes where Farrah came back to star simultaneously with Cheryl (part of Farrah's contract where she had to). Those were good episodes. They didn't hard know each in person but Farrah and Cheryl had great chemistry on screen and you could really believe that they were sisters.
Tanya Roberts.. Extraordinary beauty on the inside and outside. Met her in a moderated fan facebook chat. She was engaging, kind, hilarious... just everything you want your favorite stars to be "in real life..." She'll always be a standout to me.

Chery Ladd was the best replacement! When she joined in season 2 she fit right in and stayed till the end. Kate Jackson was my favorite. She had it all beauty and brains. But Jaclyn and Farrah got all the press because of their beauty. She couldn’t complete. Cheryl was equality beautiful and brainy too. She added more depth to the show. Shelley couldn’t “hack”it and Tonya tried but the show was over when she got there.
Kate was a good looking woman, too. But she wanted to be taken seriously as an actress, so she refused to do the bathing suit scenes. The other ladies, however, weren't as established going into that series, so they were contractually obligated to do the jiggle stuff.
I was able to see Cheryl Ladd on Broadway in Annie Get Your Gun. At first, I was disappointed because Reba Mcintyre was taking over the lead role two weeks after the day I was seeing the show but Cheryl Ladd's performance did not disappoint me at all. She was absolutely wonderful and perfect to play Annie Oakley. btw wasn't one of Tanya Roberts movie co-stars after Charlie's Angels, married to Kate Jackson? I believe on the movie poster you shown it said Andrew Stevens who was married to Kate Jackson and he was the son of Stella Stevens.
Yeah, Hubby Lee Majors & also the man who was Farrah's agent convinced Farrah to leave the show. Big mistake for Farrah's career, because a portion of her fan base resented Farrah leaving the show. I've heard from some actor (forget who) that he was watching "Saturday Night Fever" at a movie theater in 1977, and when the scene came on where Travolta's character was in his bedroom and they panned to a shot of Farrah's iconic poster on the wall, he said that the entire theater erupted with booing.

Farrah and Jaclyn were still basically unknowns. (Fun Fact: Cheryl Ladd made a guest appearance on the Rookies under her maiden name Cheryl Stopplemoor)
Nonsense, Chris. Scarecrow and Mrs. King was a hugely successful show and only ended after season 4 because Kate had breast cancer. The show's fan base is still going strong.
I absolutely love Kate Jackson, and I certainly was saddened to see her leave CA’s; but i have to be honest- IF SHE HAD to be replaced- Shelley would have been absolutely PERFECT! Every part of her style, demeanor, persona, instinct, and intuitiveness was ideal to make her addition to the detective agency exactly what was needed to have an exemplary introduction to the Angels & Bosley….. Uh….. Er…. Ah…Um…well….. E X C E P T for 1 problem…. Edward Lakso!Due to no fault on Shelley’s part, E.L. did NOT like or accept her in the Tiffany Welles role…. It had absolutely zero to do with Shelley. Either by embarrassment or retaliation, that his suggestion of the actress to play, Tiffany Wells was not accepted, a FURIOUS Lakso was determined to make sure that whomever filled the role of Tiffany Wells would not work out. I am so saddened for Shelley, because she was absolutely ideal for that role. As has been said many times before, the next step was to replace the smart angel with the ‘reeeeaaallyyy smart’ Angel…. For one example: In the same way that Kate Jackson’s original costuming (in the very beginning of Charlie’s Angels) reflected, a sophistication West Coast style, Shelley Hack’s costuming had an even better feel on the pulse of East Coast styles, and was becoming main stream, if particularly since that’s exactly how Shelley dressed in the real world, very high fashion. Since this came very natural to her, she was ahead of the new styles proving to be the trendsetter of which also was parallel in her character on the show. Like I said, she was absolutely PERFECT for Tiffany Wells. There was just one thing left to do apparently - at least as far as Edward Lakso was concerned - and that was absolutely ruin Shelley , or anyone else’s’ inclusion to the troop. He very calculatingly, and quite boldly, in my opinion produced scripts that made it appear as though, the characters of Jaclyn and Cheryl did not feel warmly toward, or completely accept their new partner, as was necessary in the show’s dynamics. These were supposed to be 3 best friends, that also worked for the same employer. It is a testament to David Doyle’s ability to act so fantastically that no matter who they added to the show, he was able to make them feel welcomed, both on & off screen, also making the audience feel welcoming towards the new person even if reflected from his own goodwill towards that person. Simply put, D. Doyle’s acceptance kind of ‘rubbed off’ on the television viewers to some degree- even if it took a little time for Shelly to be completely excepted by the viewing audience. Some viewers excepted her more quickly than others; quite a feat, considering the awkward, tense, & downright cringeworthy introduction she was given by Lakso!! On a final note, I will say that it is impossible in my opinion to not see exactly what Lakso had done, and that was totally sabotage Shelley’s chance for a warm reception, and thereby additional offer of furthered employment on CA’s by Spelling-Goldberg….. and the most despicable part of it all was how the dive in ratings was placed in the lap of Shelley!!! How sad, unfair, & unforgivable!!
This show has some of the other 'bad guys' I mentioned in a past post that would also be an interesting video to do. I thought Mrs. Ladd was a huge step up. Unfortunitely, Mrs. Farrah Fawcett made a serious of really bad decisions, both professional and personal. Saturn 3 got its money back but it was a movie that was described to me as lacking the special effects technology to make it a big hit. Tanya Roberts was guilty of bad timing only. Tanya was good but no one would extend Charlie's Angels. I thought she was very capable of carrying the role. Remember the movie 'thunder and lightning' with Keith Carradine? Mrs. Jackson was in it. I agree that it ran its course and was at the end of its run. It would have taken a major overhaul to have any chance to have gone on. If you remember back in those days, television shows would often go on too long and end badly. Good video Dave!
I didn't mind Saturn 3, I'd say it's worth watching at least once. Farrah Fawcett Majors also had a role in Logan's Run(Pre-Charlie's Angels), where she played a character who gets caught up in a Crossfire between the Sandmen and some Renegades, and gets killed.
@@robotb9-606 I watched Logan's Run in the movie theaters; bought the VHS tape when it came out and then the DVD and then the BLU Ray. I old enough to remember drive in's that cost 1 dollar to get in and see a movie.

How about doing a video on the 70s Super stunt ladies.? Starting from Rita Egleston on The Bionic Woman to Jeanne Epper on Wonder Woman. There were various stunts that were done by other stunt women on both Shows. Kitty O’Neil was brought in to do a 20 story jump on an episode of the last season of Wonder Woman. Jeanne Epper also ended up doing some stunt work on the Bionic Woman . Would be a great video.

I think Cheryl Ladd was better than Farrah fawcett and Kate Jackson leaving because she wasn’t allowed to be in Kramer vs Kramer is what brought the ratings down. Even the Farrah appearances didn’t help that season with Shelly hack
Mrf, actually someone who had purchased the Charlie's Angels Casebook, stated that according to the book, when Farrah returned in the 4th season, the ratings actually went down each time Farrah came, and Farrah's last episode was the lowest rated in the entire 4th season. This was also mentioned on a documentary about the show. So it seems Farrah's appearance in the 4th season actually hurt the ratings.

Charlie's Angels was still in the Top 10 weekly in Season 4 until episode 5 with the return of Farrrah in Fallin' Angel...that episode dropped the show to #18 in the ratings unexpectedly 😳. The falling ratings trend continued until an upswing with Angel Hunt in December 1979 🐅 🐯. However, there was a backlash with Farrah and her return on Charlie's Angels in Season 4 actually made the season plummet in the ratings. The blame on the new Angel Shelley Hack is very unwarranted. Kate Jackson should have returned in guest episodes. Anyway, RIP Farrah, David, John, and Tanya 🌹 🧡🖤💚🤍

I love Cheryl and Tanya, present tense! It's okay with my wife lol her name is Cheryl to, lol I also like the 2 Drew BARRYMORE movies. I think they really captured the spirit of the original series!
Cheryl Ladd was nice enough but didn't particularly wow me back then, but that's changed in the years since. She's one of those women who just got more beautiful with age.
2 of 6 Angels died in their 60s (Bosley too)....The others are already in their 70s............Show probably should have ended after 3 years but like so many shows they squeeze every last drop out of them.
You're right about the show running too long...but, until you have the advantage of looking back, it's really hard to know when the right time is to close down shop.
Raw Bacon, I'm glad it didn't end after Season 3. I love Seasons 4 and 5. And I love Shelley and Tanya. I'm glad that we got to meet 6 Angels instead of just 3 or 4. Actually, Seasons 2 and 3 are tied as my favorite. However, I like Seasons 4 and 5, just as much as I like Season 1.
Wow, Dave where do i start? So much to say..i guess first off, is i have every single one of those 'People' and 'TV Guide' covers, along with the interior ads. I used to own that Farrah poster [and a couple of Cheryl Ladd ones and a couple of Tanya's] I have tried to find the season 2 episode 'Angels in Paradise' intact [like it was originally broadcast] but all the streaming sites [and the DVD] always have it chopped down into two parts, and that infuriates me. I don't get the reasoning behind that. And Kate Jackson got paid more because she was secretly one of the writers and producers of the show behind the scenes. Anyway..on with the Angels.. Cheryl: I have an actual copy of Cheryl's debut album on vinyl, and i've heard the Josie And The Pussycats' album [and Cheryl was only the singing voice of Melody] I thought Millennium was a very good movie. although Kris Kristofferson can't act. Shelley: Never a Shelley fan, but i'm glad you included the 'Charlie' ad. I can't get into the Lifetime movies myself, especially the christmas ones. Tanya: Plain yummy. [But original angel Jaclyn was still the best] I love the BeastMaster movie, and Sheena and 'A View To A Kill' [honorable mention 1979's 'Tourist Trap'.] Tanya was very stunning and she was also in a 'Vega$' spinoff with Michelle Phillips [Don't remember the name, but i think it was something like 'Ladies In Blue' or something like that-i have tried to find evidence of it online, but it is nowhere to be found-almost like it doesn't exist] I think that covers everything i wanted to say, sorry if it takes so long to read. It was going to be called "Ladies in Blue" if it had been ordered to series but ABC passed. The 2-part Vega$ episode was titled "Golden Gate Cop Killer" and Tanya actually fared better there than she did on Angels
These girls are all so attractive... obvious why they were chosen. They don’t fall short in a modern comparison either. Plus they kept it classy which was also nice. It’s a good thing the show wasn’t called The Alley Cats like was originally named. Probably wouldn’t have been as classy.

Shelley Hack and Cheryl Ladd looked too similar. So did Tanya Roberts and Jaclyn Smith. Sometimes you couldn't tell them apart at first glance. I don't know what the producers were thinking when they hired the replacement angels in season 4 and 5. The producers had underestimated the importance of Kate Jackson to the show. She was irreplaceable. I am convinced, though, that Shelley and Tanya might have worked, with Kate still on the show! Imagine an Angels team Sabrina, Tiffany and Julie 🙂

I do see that it was published by Marvel Comics! I have a wonderful story about Marvel,check this out! On May 7th Wade Miley pitched a no hitter for my favorite team the Cincinnati Reds! He was sporting a temporary tattoo of The Hulk, put on his arm by his 4 year old son Jeb!! Marvel Comics got wind of it and decided to put out a VERY COOL poster of Wade and The Hulk! It was the 17th no hitter in Reds history, so today (the 17th of July), there giving the posters away at the ballpark in Cincinnati!! The guy who did the artwork on the poster (Brian Crosby) will throw out the first pitch! And here's the kicker, his dad (Ed Crosby) played on the Reds in the 70's on The Big Red Machine!! HOW COOL IS THAT STORY!! If you could pass this story along to your bro, Steve I think he might get a kick out of it too!!📺⚾🇺🇸

I never liked Farrah so i was good with Cheryl. I think Kelly (Jacklyn) was my favorite tho. Watching the show more recently she seemed to have the most complicated storyline too Kris was my second favorite. I didn’t like Sabrina much as a kid but appreciate her much more now. Tiffany was okay and Julie….well the show was nearing its end by then 😂 i gave my mom Charlie perfume one Christmas when i was a kid. I was so proud to give it to her. My dad gave her Chanel #5 and opening all the gifts she forgot who gave what and told me she liked my gift better but she was talking about Chanel not Charlie 😂. When i hear Charlie’s Angels tho I think of these girls not Cameron, Lucy and Drew. Farrah seemed to have a similar departure as Suzanne Somers from Threes Company. Both wanted more money both seemed influenced by spouse and bth had to stay on in limited capacity except poor Suzanne was just on the phone
I really don't think so. Farrah, Kate and Jaclyn were friends and had wonderful chemistry on the show. When Farrah was forced to do her guest appearances she was nervous (understandable). She said it was Kate who had helped her a lot in her first guest appearance so she felt more at ease.
