Remembering Hurricane Katrina 

Now this is a real community of good, hard-working, industrious Americans. You make us proud.

Thank you for this memory. When Katrina hit, I was going through chemotherapy for breast cancer. I survived Katrina and breast cancer and I’m here today to say there’s no better place to live then St. Bernard Parish. Stay safe everyone.

I begged my parents to leave but they wanted to stay. I told them they would be swimming,but they refused. I stayed with them at chalmette high and went to rescue my neighbor and saw many dead bodies floating. I was in a 10’flatboat with a friend and fence boards as paddles. We got my neighbor though. Sad days.

St bernard is a special place bc of the wonderful people. ❤❤❤

I was born and raised in st Bernard

Im from Arkansas and spent almost 3yrs in Louisiana helping with clean up, i lived on 23 south behind an elderly lady named miss Kay a then 90+ yo woman who was absolutely the nicest lady ive ever met, we worked in St bernard parish on the levees and with local cleanup, ive got to say as nice as the people were i still call La my second home, i hauled seafood for yrs b4 katrina so i didnt have to think twice about basically moving i got to st bernard parish right after the water had dropped and was amazed to see the water level lines at roof level,, so was interesting to see what it looked like b4 hand, i hope u all in the parish are recovered ur lifes as best u can,, ✌❤

it is hard to put hurricane katrina into words. but i think looking back on what happened gives us a view of the true st bernard spirit. i was there as a firefighter and still to this day can not really tell others what it was like during the storm. its like a 30 second preview of a action movie. but what i saw after the storm defined us as a people. kind, helpful, caring and loving. thanks for the memory of this day!

St.Bernard was my hometown I had moved away before katrina. But My family still lived there. They evacuate to my home. I'll never forget seeing the first images of St.Bernard on TV my sister and I both broke down crying she lost everything her home was in Arabi. And my entire family lost everything. I finally went to see my beloved parish or Da Parish as we called it. And I drove to my childhood home. I stepped out and nearly fell to the ground. Couldn't believe the devastation... Seemed like a war zone. It still makes my heart sink seeing the devastion all these years later! God bless , from a true Challmation

About ST RITA'S NURSING HOME. I knew someone that worked as an LPN & what this man said is a DAMN LIE! The Director and Owner went AGAINST families AND their evacuation plan! They lied to families that they were being evacuated, & told the nurses that refused to stay they were cowards, the state would make sure these nurses licenses would be stripped from them and they would NEVER work again! Thank GOD she left! This nurse was very special to me as she was my only SISTER. Unfortunately, we lost her 1 year later to a massive heart attack brought on by the stress of Katrina & taking care of her injured husband. Losing her hurts my soul. But at least she died swiftly and didn't suffer or drown like all the elderly in St Ritas.

It wasn't Katrina that did this to St. Bernard Parish. It was the failed levees of the Corps of Engineers. There was very little wind damage. The damage from the flooding from failed levees was the whole problem. Make no mistake. :(

We lived in jackson ms at the time and we felt it that far away. We sat glued to the TV watching this devastation. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I’m so sad for all the loss. This is a great documentary. I don’t think I knew all of this.

Most emotional and genuine documentary I’ve seen in all my years of still watching videos about Katrina ... to me this is and will always be the most devastating hurricane I’ve seen in my years of living to see grown men crying lets you know this was very painful 💔😢... Mississippi and Alabama was hit bad as well my heart goes out to ALL the people in every place 😢❤️ and the song at the end 😔

I lived in Waveland, Ms when Katrina hit MS . The next day was my birthday and my son turn 1 years old on sep 13 , it was a terrible my son was very sick no doctor no hospital and thanks to a volunteer nurse took my son to Liberty MS rescued us until my son get well and moved to Georgia. Appreciate what Noralyn Blalock and family did for us!!!!

Even though I do not live in Louisiana, I can definitely relate to what Katrina Did to this Nation. A little over 15 years later, and some places never recovered from the wrath of this Violent storm. Heres a quote that I kinda thought of: "Just Because a name is gone, doesn't mean the memories go with it" referring to the retirement of Katrina. Though thoughts are still in the memories of many in New Orleans.

Wow this is crazy. I hadn't seen this before. I actually saw my uncle and a cousin in this video. And my old neighbor Joey Difatta. Great guy. So sad to see it all put together like this.

I'm so sorry about each and every single human life lost along with pets, houses, business, loss of security, jobs, school. It truly was a major tragedy the biggest natural disaster in the US. My family goes to New Orleans and vicinity 2 to 3 times a year just to show appreciation, we love your culture and people.

My parents lived in a double directly behind the Home Depot on Judge Perez. They were not going to evacuate. Everyone in our immediate & extended family kept calling them insisting, demanding and downright getting very angry with there refusal to leave. They finally gave in. It took 18 hours to get to Panama City Florida where my husband's family live. Then FEMA set us up at the Boardwalk on the beach. We were there for 1 month. When we took my Dad to Chalmette to see his house, my husband and I had to hold on tight to him because the swamp mud was 1 ft thick and slimy. When Dad walked through the front door he broke. He cried so hard he didn't make a sound. Then his screams came belting out, over and over "Oh NO! Oh My God, NO"!! EVERYTHING WAS DESTROYED! Then he saw his mattress which was still shoved up into the attic rafters. He turned to us and started crying out "I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I'm so sorry. Please forgive me!" I didn't understand why he was saying this and then he said, "We gave you such a hard time when you were just wanting us to be safe. THANK YOU FOR SAVING OUR LIVES! We would have drowned. Oh, that would have destroyed you all!" He was 79 & Mom was 77 when hurricane katrina destroyed our beloved Chalmette, Arabi, New Orleans and all it's suburbs. My sister died a year later from the stress of losing her home, having to constantly move to keep employed, being in a major car accident where her husband was paralysed and caring for him. All while they lost their benefits because of reasons beyond their control. Her husband succumbed to his quadriplegic paralysis 1 year after she died. I, like MANY affected by the losses of the storm, suffered debilitating depression for 10 years. After many many years of therapy I have risen above and out into the sun again. But hurricane season still sends me into severe bouts of anxiety and PTSD. I had to stay for hurricane Ida. NO hotel would accept my 4 dogs. 2 to a room max was EVERY ONE of their replies. I even offered to rent 2 rooms. ALL the hotels refused my offer stating "Due to their past experience of more than 2 pets ending up alone in one room while people stayed in the other room we cannot allow it." Next time I will pack us all in our 2 vehicles, get out of harms way & just live in our vehicles until it is safe to return. I HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE

My beloved hometown I pray thry never see this again.

I did not experience the event cause I live in Nebraska. But I'll never forget the day my boots hit the ground on September 1st. I've been involved with disaster relief, search and rescue, triage and incident command since 2001. The things I experienced in New Orleans in '05 have stuck with me for sure. I bounced around a lot down there in the 4 weeks I assisted so I'm unsure of the triage location but one of the first victims I encountered was a very distraught 9 year old little girl who was totally separated from her family and absolutely terrified. For 2 days she would not leave my side and every move I made she thought I was going to leave her alone. We were able to reunite her with her 15 year old sister. It was very bittersweet because she also found out they had lost both of their parents. At a different triage location 3 days later I happened to cross paths with an uncle of theirs and were able to reunite them that day. Broke my own rule of not letting my emotions into my mission of service and I pray those kids are doing well today. I have not been there either before or after the disaster and I truly hope the people of the city are doing well today. God bless

My parents lived on Chalona Dr., all the way at the end, 2nd to last house on the street next to the 40 Arpent Canal and Bayou Bienvenue levee. They had 15 -20 feet of water come through and wipe out that area. Total devestation of both structure and ones heart and soul. A great community gone.

If you are watching this now, please know that Hurricane Ida's impact has been no less devastating, it just hit areas that are less 'popular'. As one fireman told me 5 weeks ago, 'we learned NOTHING from Katrina. We didn't plan better, we didn't have resources planned/available any better, and we didn't inform our future on any current natural disaster. We plan for everything to be 'ideal'.'' Human nature 'rolls' with what is already extant. We're no better off now, because our leaders learned NOTHING from past experience. Do not rely on the government to protect or save you. That is not their objective. Optics is what rules... what people 'believe' counts for more than 'what is the case.' Look out for your neighbours. They will look out for you. That's the best you can hope for.

I was just in New Orleans and had it from a local which was brought up by Spike Lee in a documentary some years ago. The Levy was blown up on purpose ro save the French Quarter which has high tourism. The Nineth Ward and St Bernrnad Parrish is only about 4 miles from the French Quarter.

Wow, the fact that the statue of Mother Mary and the ring on the angel statue didn't get destroyed or lost while everything else is a wreck, is just an obvious sign from God.

I hate this time in my life and the memories from it. I also hate NOLA. I drove through the storm after evacuating my family. I was a Corpman in the US Coast Guard and was supposed to be excited about the birth of my 2nd child. Instead, I got recalled and found myself praying I was going to survive to see my family again. The chaos, the violence and lawlessness, the absolute collapse of civilization, the level of destruction....I will never set foot in NOLA ever again. That city should have been written off as destroyed and left abandoned.
