Doc Emrick takes a look back at Joe Louis Arena memories: "Joe Louis Arena Had Plenty of Historic Moments"
A new house in 1979 with a river view, though no river view windows. It took 36 steps to get to the front door, but once inside there were rewards, just not right away.
The Dead Wings of that era lost their first ever game at Joe Louis and many more. They missed the playoffs 14 of 16 years, until new ownership came in and hired well.
"I'm very interested in restoring the tradition that we've enjoyed for many many years."
And in their first draft they got a hall of famer. They began to win and in an arena named for a prized fighter, they weren't shy.
The 2,100 season ticket holders the Ilitch's inherited grew to a huge waiting list. Record sellout strings, and in time, a young defensemen arrived from Sweden. They hired the game's winningest coach. And right at home after 42 years a Stanley Cup for Detroit.
Steve Yzerman raises the chalice above his head. The flash bulbs all around the Joe Louis Arena.
Grizzled opposing veterans said they love coming to that hockey barn, but you had to be quicker there. The fast ice and those springy boards.
During a string of 25 straight playoff appearances there were times the turning point came when the slender lady sang, and the iceman had really cleared the ice.
It seems to me this hockey house is like most of our houses. There are times of great joy, holidays of sorts.
Drives, the slapshot, he scores!
There are times when a family needs to stick up for each other.
"Darren McCarty gets his shots in on Claude Lemieux."
There are times to celebrate accomplishments like a graduation. There are times to pull together when someone's hurting and pray for better. And in every house, the times of grieving when there's little to say.
Two weeks from tomorrow is a Monday, nothing scheduled here, no demolition crew yet. But like the day you and your family left the house you grew up in for a bigger newer place, chances are you did then like we are doing here. You made one more set of memories, taking one last look.
March 26, 2017 - DETROIT - NBC Sports
Minnesota Wild: 2 - Detroit Red Wings: 3 - FINAL OT
Sunday’s overtime win against the Wild wasn’t the last hurrah for the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena, but that time is rapidly approaching.
The Red Wings have four more dates at the historic building:
April 1: vs. Maple Leafs
April 3: vs. Senators
April 8: vs. Canadiens
April 9: vs. Devils
With the playoffs out of reach, Red Wings fans must grapple with the end of an era.
To help with that cause, Mike “Doc” Emrick narrated a great look back at Joe Louis Arena, which you can enjoy in the video above.
And, if it helps make the future look a little rosier, take a look at highlights from Sunday’s victory.
