Bill Van Scoyoc was a Morgan Stanley employee working in Tower 2 of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. He bravely led the evacuation of 276 fellow employees and lives to share the amazing heroism he witnessed, displayed by Vietnam Veteran Cyril ‘Rick’ Rescorla.
Rescorla, as head of security for Morgan Stanley, was responsible for saving the lives of 2,700 employees before he was killed in the building’s collapse.
Recorded on October 24th, 2019.

Rick wasn’t just a Vietnam veteran, he wasn’t even American..he was in the British army because he was born in Cornwall uk. He was also in the Northern Rhodesian police for 3 years, also had a short stint in the Met police in the uk He aspired to join in the Vietnam war, which he did. He lead a fruitful life filled with trying to make the world around him better. We Brits, especially the Cornish, are proud of him for what he accomplished.

In 1993, at the World Trade Center bombing, Rick Recorla was the last person to exit those buildings. He had to "do a final sweep" to make sure he'd gotten all his people out. That's what he was doing on 9/11 when his Tower came down. And it was Rick Rescorla who said; "All the real heroes are dead."
@erad67
@erad67 10 месяцев назад
>"All the real heroes are dead." That line of thinking is pretty common in the military. My WWII vet great-grandfather who was awarded a Silver Star threw it in the garbage and said "I'm not a hero! The only heroes are dead heroes."

Thank you for the clarification regarding Rick R. I clicked on this video to learn more about "The Vietnam Vet..." not knowing his role in the events of 9/11. 25 minutes in I still knew little other than he did safety training and had leadership abilities. I wish they had put sometime like your summary in the beginning of the video so the interview made more sense. Kudos to the gentleman being interviewed but this clip is more about him than Rick.

@@Lynn-kh5rs So, I'm a bit confused. I am unfamiliar with Rick's story. Did he survive the attack? Is he still alive? What happened to him? The title is misleading. I thought I would hear Mr. Lescorla tell his own story. Who is the narrator? I'm not hearing anything about Rick R. so far and the video is over half over. Okay, finally the interviewer clarifies that Rick was one of 12 people who didn't make it out.

@@lemorab1Rick was one of the 12 from MS that did not survive. I never met him but was employed by MS and was one of the 276 trainees, it is my understanding Rick was behind all of us in getting out. MS was the largest lease holder at the time with over 20 floors. Our training was held on 61st floor but tons of other MS employees who worked in the building daily were all spread out amongst those floors - he was floor sweepin making sure everyone was out - since MS only lost 12 people, they had to have at least made it to the stairwell and were on their way down when WTC2 crumbled.

@@missyscarborough1301 Thank you so much for this clarification! My good friends Janette MacKinlay and Jim Lecce lived across the street from the WTC, on the opposite (rear) side of the building that got hit first, and rumors abounded about what had happened, because no one could see anything. They didn't realize they were in Deep Sh*t until the tower literally began to collapse and everyone ran into the enclosed, central hallway of the apartment building. Janette wrote a detailed book about her personal experience of 9/11 and the immediate aftermath, self-published, called "Fortunate." Janette and Jim both died of cancer in 2010.

The company I work for was acquired by Morgan Stanley earlier this year. They e-mailed us a 9/11 tribute video for the 20th anniversary. Rick Rescorla was mentioned in it. Since then I have been learning more about him through RU-vid videos, and all I can say is wow! What an amazing human being! The world needs more people like him. I can’t believe I hadn’t heard his story until this year! He was a true hero and saved so many lives! I’m glad he listened to his instincts and immediately started evacuating people even though the announcement in the building said not to leave. Of course there are the a******, but I think some people do not get that if the story makes you sad or is tragic, putting a thumbs down does not mean that they're saying they didn't like the situation. If that makes sense, but i know it happens. Giving a thumbs up however means you are paying homage & respect to the heroes, survivors, those lost, and ALL of their loved ones. While I always knew Riscola died a hero on 9/11, i never knew he worked for Corporate Security at Morgan Stanley until watching this video. This makes me appreciate his efforts of heroism even more because I coincidentally work for the same Firm today. If he survived I could be shaking his hand one day. Its impressive that he saved literally 99% of the Firm employees that day and sacrificed his life in the process. without his efforts, some - if not a great amount - of the Firm employees I provide support to and work with might not be around today. In fact, I recently did a support ticket for Corporate Security and thought of how I could have met Riscola today should he still be around. Every time I exit the building, there is a memorial placard in front of the lobby including Riscola’s name. I always look at his name and think “what a true and smart hero”.

I'm sure he mentions all the explosions before the planes crashed...one of the last William saved was a over weight lady no shoes couldn't walk..so willie convinces a fire fighter we can put her in a wheelchair and drag her down 70 stories....willie cleaned the stairs every day. He was in super human shape..she made it down. But willie remembers going for more.and willie describes later that when he got to the street again he saw that heavy lady cut into several pieces.he says that huge glass sections had fallen and hit that lady that he saved....William describes thinking about his mother just as your guy talks about talking to his parents...but willie describes pleading with God .asking God that if I don't survive promise me you will not let me die in a place where my mother will see me on TV...willie was a simple janitor. He vacuumed and swept all 112 stairs on the floors.not like your guy..I'm sure your guy was REALLY there saving 100s but he just doesn't descibe it like willie does.Maybe your guy had such a traumatic experience he just doesn't remember things like willie .but I'm sure your guy was REALLY there..Right ?

@@randyjohnson6845 Both Rick Rascola and William Rodriguez were in the towers that day! No one is lying about being there that day. Rick was working with Morgan Stanley on the upper floors and he got most of his crew out and William saved thousands of people due to his janitor position and having a master key for all 100 stairwells. But the thing is, there were thousands of survivors that day, and that means there is going to be thousands of survivor stories! We haven't heard them all! But no one is trying to one up Williams Story. You need to chill and watch your tone!! You really shouldn't call someone a liar when they are speaking about a survivor of 911, that's completely disrespectful!

@@randyjohnson6845and please know - just because someone doesn’t allow the images in their head to come out their mouths to become images in someone else’s head DOES NOT mean we were not very much there feeling and seeing lots of the same - some of us just literally can’t speak about all of it. Rest assured, every person telling their story of that day is not speaking out loud every ounce of what the saw, what they felt, what the heard, what the smelt …… for years! Some of us feel like People in the impact areas and above were faced with unimaginable realities that day and exercised the little control they had over how the inevitable looked for them and some of us intentionally don’t speak of those parts because those people deserve dignity too! My Dad was a Ranger in Vietnam, he was discharged straight into the sherrifs department training and was a cop straight out of the military, cross trained in EMS and FF. The Vietnam vets don't get enough love so many of them went through hell came back to scum belittling them and were ignored for a long time, my Dad isn't the only story like this, or the awesome man in this video there are countless Vietnam Vets who don't get enough love like their dads did coming home from WW2 (Korea also but a lot of the WW2 guys re-enlisted much like my Grandpa did). If you know ANY vet from ANY war give them lots of love they earned it and a half.

To have someone described as a respected mentor, leader and someone who care more about others than himself says it all. Rick always knew that terrorists would return to the WTC and try again. He held unplanned fire drills which folks grumbled about but what a lifesaving event.

I have never known any real heroes who where not extremely humble about what they did. Thank God Mr. Van Scoyoc put the welfare of his trainees first and continued leading them down when word came over the PA system that "the building was secure - go back to your desks." A humble hero is the perfect person to honor another.

I agree. Mr. Bill Van Scoyoc's quick extinct of survival and training by Mr. Rick Riccola kicked into high gear to get out of that tower. If he would have followed that guy's instructions over the PA System, I doubt the new trainees and himself would be alive today to talk about it. RIP to the Riccola family.

What an honor to hear the inpact Rick had especially during 9/11. To hear that Morgan Stanley cared for their employees and ensured they received all the help they needed to work through the trauma they experienced! It seems to me this is the shuoldnt be unheard of! We honor them as well! Unfortunately, our EMS/Firefighters weren't given the same care and supoort from the NY/Federal government though they risked and many sacrificed their lives! This is a shame! No wonder so many families are still struggling. This should not be so!

Yes but the flu killed more and aids killed 50,000 in one year. Dont let the news dictate your beliefs. Look at how much your struggling right now and how crazy our country is now. The fact that you loved your friend Rick so much and paid such attention to the training he gave you is endearing. We don't give enough credit to our vets. They are the backbone of our country and fought and fight for us every day. You sir, are a true hero for making the decision to leave the building at the very first sign of trouble. Had you waited even 5 minutes longer , the last outcome could have been changed so much. You heard Rick's voice in your head to leave at the first sign of trouble and that saved everyone but you took the action that day. God bless you and your family. God bless Rick for his heroism and may his family forever be so proud of him. I know they will forever miss him but what he was born to do was what he died doing which was saving lives. He wasn't about to let Bin laden take 1 more life than what he thought he could save even though he didn't know at the time who was attacking us. He was a true soldier to the end and I am so proud of him. God bless him and may his soul rest in peace now with the angels knowing that he did everything that he could have. Thank you for sharing your story today.

I heard about Ricks story. Morgan Stanley was so fortunate to have someone who knew what do in case of an emergency and was able to teach people what to do in case of an emergency ever happened. What a hero. Rick could just saved himself that day but no he save other people's lives. Many Americans are now aware of there surroundings thanks what he did that day. Most bosses for other companies in the tower that day had no idea what to do. When I was watching the documentary inside the Twin towers the boss for AON corporation in that building which was above the impact zone in the trade center that day.The supervisor there that day did not what to do. Neither did the staff on the windows of the world restaurants at first. In fact most other bosses or supervisors just kept their workers in their offices which claim their lives on 9/11. Or the bosses supervisors would just save themselves that day or they just ended up trapped above the impact zone that day.
@amandafight7627

Well, the Windows of the World staff was above the impact zone, so even if the bosses knew what to do, they were all trapped and couldn't get down anyway, due to the plane taking out all the upper stairwells. So incredibly sad! But yes, many bosses in the Word Trade Centers didn't know what to do that day, sadly. I will never forget that day as a 12 year old!

can't believe how happy this guy is talking about his job, wish i had his passion for work. shows the importance of having good leadership. he made a quick decision to evacuate the building and helped a lot of people out on his way down. lots of people probably didn't have someone like that nearby and so they didn't get down fast enough. i rly admire people that know their values and know that saving others is most important to them so they immediately stepped up. i hope someday i would have that level of self insight and level-headedness.
