B) As sovereign states they united under the Articles of Confederation. C) As sovereign states they seceded from the Union as it existed under the Articles to join a new Union under the current Constitution. D) No one involved in the Hartford Convention was prosecuted for conspiracy to commit treason. E) When the Republic of Texas, recognized by the USA as a sovereign state, joined the Union by popular vote there was no constitutional provision that they could not withdraw by popular vote as they later did. By this professor’s argument, a law cannot be made retroactive to change the terms of a treaty (and the Republic of Texas joined the Union by treaty) already agreed to. This author knows his history. I have read countless books about The War Between the States in my 50+ years of being fascinated about 'Merican history. I like to hear an unbiased opinion, which isn't easy these days!
Back in those days states were more like separate country’s , Lee loved the country, but refused to fight his own people and state , try making that decision!
All confederate monuments should be melted down and recast as memorials to the millions of African Americans upon whose backs the economy of the South was built upon. Further, the insurance companies, banks, and industries who gleefully lent their support to the southern economy also owe trillions of dollars in reparations to the descendants of those African Americans who were victims of the kidnappings, murders, rapes and enslavement by America.
