Wow!!!! Thank you so much for this! This is my childhood/teen-hood. I too only bought from the newsstand. That was part of the experience, just like picking up issues of Famous Monsters. Those magazines kept me dreaming.... 💫

Starlog Magazine#1 was important for fans watching Star Trek reruns. That issue had the Star Trek episode guide. Once you figured out the rerun schedule on your local tv station, you could figure out the day you needed to watch in order to catch any episodes you missed.

I still have an issue of _Famous Monsters_ with Darth Vader on the cover. Even though I've become quite the minimalist in my later years, I can't seem to get rid of it. Every time I see it, open it, smell the pages. . . It's like I'm 10 again.

I find it interesting that even though I was an avid fan of _Star Trek, Space: 1999,_ and virtually any other sci fi that came my way before 1977, once _Star Wars_ came out, I started to devour all of the genre magazines I could find. It might have been the age I was when it hit (10). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thank you, Dave, for bringing back some more good memories! I subscribed to STARLOG and FUTURE magazines, and was a member of the Science Fiction Book Club for a while. I can still remember checking the mail box for the latest issues of STARLOG and FUTURE and being so excited when they arrived. As I recall, STARLOG was the science-fiction/fantasy-based magazine while FUTURE was the science-fact-based publication that was somehow associated with the publishers of STARLOG. I think I also had some kind of subscription to receive outer space artwork in cardboard tubes that was somehow related to FUTURE magazine, though my memory of the specifics fails me at the moment. The artwork may have simply been a side benefit of subscribing to FUTURE. I also remember somehow getting on the mailing list for a catalog of science fiction and fantasy products that was published in the format of something like a small newspaper. I can't recall the name of the catalog. Videos of Gene Roddenberry's TV shows and movies were available (Star Trek, Spectre, The Questor Tapes, etc.), the SEARCH TV show episodes (starring Hugh O'Brian), Kung Fu (with David Carradine), obscure science fiction and fantasy movies, and so much more. I enjoyed the way a synopsis for each episode of a TV series was usually listed with just enough detail that I could use it as a sort of abbreviated episode guide. Ah, I miss the good, old days of youthful innocence, excitement, and enthusiasm!
@jdsundstrom

While I never knew of Starlog magazine, I visited the Starlog Store around the corner from where I worked, at the Garden State Plaza, Paramus, NJ, a bunch of times. What an awesome store!! Entering you went up 2 shallow perforated metal steps that stretched across the entire storefront and then you stopped in your tracks. While not quite the bridge of the Enterprise, the sounds, especially the sounds, and the design style made you feel you were really, really there!!! On the Bridge of the Enterprise!!! The merchandise selection was vast for the store's size. Comics galore, figurines, masks, toys and everything else Sci-Fi. Picture all the merch at a Comic Con jammed into 1000 square feet!!!! It was there for a few years then it quietly disappeared, just as it had appeared. Here's a description of the store from it's manager I just found before writing this. Scroll down to commenter 4, Jordan, and enjoy!!! forum.rebelscum.com/showthread.php?t=893018

Hi Dave! Starlog was a great magazine and covered all areas of Sci-fi and was a must read for sci-fi fans. I loved the early issues of the late 70’s and 80’s and still have all my original copies. I'm a few years older than you and in my late teens/early adult years I worked in a grocery store that had a fairly large magazine & paperback section so I was able to build a large collection of 150+ of the old Starlog mags and, especially, Star Trek paperbacks. Sadly I had to sell them at a garage sale my Wife and I did around 1995. There was this one guy that came in and saw them. His eyes lit up and asked "How much for it all?!?" I was relieved and thrilled to find a fellow fan and sold them all to him for $10 if I remember. He was like a kid who had just scored the Christmas Jack Pot! I know he enjoyed them as much as I did....but that's what it's all about. We share the things we love with others that love them just as much. Thank you SO MUCH for these videos you share with US! (BTW, Starlog was where we went BITD to find out all the dope on what was coming...today we have YT! AND you are DEAD ON! At first it WAS the Revenge Of Kahn!)

I remember paying 50 cents for TV Guide. I could sit for hours reading every single entry. Wow. Great memories. I bought some back issues of Starlog for their episode guides. Still have them in my closet and I know I'll rummage through those later. Of course now I'm also thinking about Modern Screen, Rona Barrett's Hollywood Magazine, Photoplay magazine, etc. Back when 75 cents bought you a nice sized chock full of stories and photos from the real golden age magazine . Thanks for reminding me of the wonderful youth I had.

Thanks for this trip down memory lane. I started reading Starlog when I was in middle school around sixth or seventh grade. I loved the coverage it gave tp the various Star Trek movies and TV shows (I was a reader when The Next Generation was starting out). I still remembered the tenth anniversary issue which they covered films like Short Circuit, Aliens, Big Trouble In Little China, The Fly, heck even Space Camp. I still kept reading it up until it ceased publication in 2009 (anout the time my mother died.) Those were two things I mourned that year. I also belong to a fan group on Facebook that talks about Starlog and the various articles that appeared in it.

Just after I got my first after school job as a teenager, I remember walking home one evening and stopping in a small convenience store to get a soda and found myself browsing their newsstand and ended up coming away with a couple of comic books and a copy of Starlog. And for the next several years this became a regular thing for me. I remember a lot of those articles, personal interviews with the cast and crews of the various shows and movies that I loved, pieces about upcoming shows and movies and retrospectives of older ones. In particular I remember a particular commemorative issue celebrating Star Wars' 15th anniversary, and reading and rereading an article within telling the history of original Star Wars comic series by Marvel and summaries pictures from some of it's best issues, most of which I'd never known about, and it inspired me to eventually seek out those books to read for myself. Eventually though, as they spun off their Star Trek coverage into a separate magazine all to itself, and Star Wars got their own fan club magizine, and there were less and less of the nostalgia pieces I enjoyed, I stopped reading some time in the 90s. Starlog seemed to disappear from most newsstands by the dawn of the 21st century, and I'm actually surprised to hear that it survived until the mid-2000s. Ah, well.

I remember the ad for the Battlestar GALACTICA Warrior jackets. I really, really wanted one but never got one . . . until decades later. I'd seen them in person prior to getting mine and knew they weren't exactly like the ones worn by Starbuck, Apollo, Boomer and the rest but the seven year old in me still really, really wanted one. After getting it, a medium when a large would have fit better, I was disappointed and ended up reselling it. Seeing the licensed and fan made screen accurate jackets turned me off to the old school one. I suppose if I ever come across another one I'll go ahead and get it and appreciate it for what it is.

I filled out the order from and got really excited over that jacket. My Mom had said I needed a new coat. So I thought perfect here's one. She looked at it and said no it'll never keep you warm enough. I remember showing her a picture of Starbuck and saying look at it begging. It didn't have a hood to cover my head and just wouldn't work to keep me warm in the winter. So not meeting Mom's standards I never got that jacket. I'm 53 now maybe I should get over it.

thank you for sharing your memories. i really loved the first few years of starlog. i remember seeing it for the first time at our local IGA grocery store. i read it on the 'newstand'. it was the summer of 1976. that issue seemed to hang around forever. it seemed like many months before the next issue arrived. i was 14 at the time. the summer of 1976 was a great one for me. it was filled with sandlot sports, eating watermelon nearly every day, many, many comic books, will eisner's the spirit from warren, the shadow in paperback, happy days on tv, much talk of girls, bike races. for whatever reason i also remember that my friends and i all wore plain white t-shirts that summer. i liked the white t-shirts because they reminded me of the shirts spin and marty wore on the repeats of the mickey mouse club! i could go on and on. it was also the summer i discovered nectarines! lol any way, i loved starlog and especially those year in review extra pages issues. oddly, i don't recall future magazine, but i do recall fangoria debuting in the summer of 1979.

My first issue of Starlog was #31. Mine was at an IGA store in my hometown, that had the best selection of magazines, and books. The feature was Disney's The Black Hole, but I bought it mostly because it had an article on The Empire Strikes Back. They had pictures from the set, and they listed some crazy rumors about the plot, one of which involved a space queen who would be played by Zsa Zsa Gabor. After that Starlog was a monthly habit until around 1988. Starlog was where I saw the first photo of Boba Fett from the set of Empire. It was where I learned about Doctor Who, Mad Max, and many other movies, including...Mega Force. I recently purchased the Mega Force blu ray, and I can tell you it's still a horrible movie, but it's fun to watch. Thanks for posting your videos Dave, they always take me on a nice trip down memory lane. I have a collection of the Dell Marvel books, both the reprints, and the original prose novels. I loved those books.

There was a page in the back that I called the big tease page, it had movies that were coming out per month then it had what was in development. That was the tease. Gaaahhhh!! Too much in the video that I want to address! 😁 Like you, Dave, I spent many hours in a department store. My father worked for Woolco. I too was an avid _Starlog_ reader as well. I was so disappointed when it stopped being published. I don't think I would have followed them online. It's just not the same. Having said that, ironically I downloaded all those archived _Starlogs_ because I was afraid that they might go one day. I too really wanted one of those Battlestar Galactica jackets. In my memory, there was an ad for them in every single issue ─ taunting me.😂 And I know what you mean about Battlestar Galactica vs Star Wars at the time. As I'm sure you'll agree, it wasn't a competition. We were just thrilled to get more great sci-fi. The one scene that really got me excited which was on the television ads (and I'm almost positive there was a still of it in Starlog) was when they were in the depths of the planet _Carillon._ Starbuck, Apollo and company were traversing a bridge in the caves, blasting away at the _Ovions_ chasing them. I quite liked the way Battlestar Galactica got away from having to paint laser bolts on film each week. A flash from the muzzle of the blaster, then suddenly - what they're aiming at goes _BOOM!_ Another great video Dave! Thanks! I purchased issue #1 as soon as I saw it on the newsstand and was hooked immediately. I subscribed when I could but more often than not, I had to wait for new issues to be released, meaning there were gaps in my collection. Over the years, I have been able to fill those gaps in and now my collection is complete (with a few duplicates here and there) mainly thanks to Ebay and Mile High Comics in Denver. It's fun to review those old issues and track the history of the Indiana Jones movies or the Alien series, not to mention Star Trek and Star Wars of course. I would like to think that Starlog could be revived somehow, not necessarily as print media, but in some sort of digital or streaming format.

Here is my favorite story about 'Starlog' Magazine ^_^ I remember reading it when I was a kid, and I think I read it not long after Star Wars came out. A few years later I read about another science-fiction movie that was being made. It had something to do with the crew of a starship going out into space and encountering intelligent lifeforms. To me, it sounded something like a mix between Star Trek and Star Wars.....the best of both worlds. Too younng to have much of my own money to go to the movies myself, I asked an older sibling to take me to the movie, which she did. We got there a bit early, and my first clue that there was something unusual about this movie should have been when I saw a woman exit the theater before it was over, with this very upset look on her face....she must really not like Science-Fiction (as most of my family). Well, I soon learned why, as I saw for the first time the exciting adventures of the crew of the Starship Nostromo, and the lifeform they were trying to 'communicate' with....yes, the movie that I thought was going to be a Star Wars/Star Trek mash up was "Alien". I new nothing about "R" rated movies at the time, but I am certain my sister knew this was a horror movie, and was a bit of a cruel joke on her part (although I forgive her ^_^). That being said, there hasn't been a year since that I haven't had at least one nightmare about giving birth to or running away from H.R. Giger's creation. Also, I'm embarrassed to say, I've developed a certain thing for women who wear T-shirts and tiny, tiny undies (even though I don't have a thing for Miley Cyrus, that "Wrecking Ball" music video awakened some old memories ^_^). I still have issues mouldering away in my storage room, maybe I'll go back and dig some up soon and re-read them ^_^
@jdsundstrom
@jdsundstrom 5 лет назад
I am certain your sister knew as well! Still, it sounds like she was able to get you into a movie that I wasn't able to see until a couple of years later because my parents would never have taken me to an R rated film. So, if you look at it that way, she was pretty darn cool!

Great video (again!!!). Yup, I bought that first issue! Read it cover to cover! If memory serves, it may have come out at the time when they were working on ST: Phase 2, or maybe even before when the plans had originally fell on doing a movie. (Seventies Trek had such a sordid history!) I couldn't afford to stay with the magazine consistently after the first few issues, sadly. BTW- There was another magazine that came out about this time (maybe a little earlier) -"All About Star Trek Fan Clubs". It didn't have the budget Starlog did nor the staying power but look it up if you're not familiar with it. I think there are some PDFs out there. It's a great look at Trek fandom before the movies came out when we only had TOS, TAS, and a handful of novels.

I read that magazine from 1976 to 1985. Whenever someone reminisces about Starlog Magazine I like to remind everyone about the ads for Starlog's exclusive "1941" tie-in merchandise that ran for months and months, which I don't think they could ever sell on account of the film being a notorious bomb. Starlog would promote anything sci-fi/fantasy or Lucas/Spielberg genre-related regardless of quality. It was a way to keep abreast of what was coming up, but after awhile I stopped caring about what the latest thing from Amblin would be.
