Remembering The Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith Game

With the reveal of the new Kenobi trailer, we have to go back to the movie tie-in video game that started it all. These two versions, being the PS2 and Nintendo DS copies, are completely different games. It highlights what was so special about this era of video games as you can get a great action game and 2D side scroller from the same label.

Played this all the time on ps2. It went so hard. The best licensed game of that era. It did create a tinge of disappointment when I saw the movie and anakin didn’t actually duel mace windu.

@@jamariojackson4289 that would be so cool, idk if you've played the new battlefront 2 even tho it has its glaring issues I always thought hero showdown dueling was superb regardless of the lack of characters and such but I was thinking, just hear me out......if they did something like that mixed with the original rots video game fighting mode style and they added better combos than what we got in bf2 like you could do grapples, Ariel combos, special combos, and finishers etc. Idk think that would be cool to.

I am 27 and I remember running errands with my mom around a plaza that had a Best Buy. We went in and right in the entrance they had a TV set up with an Xbox console, playing ROTS. This was a week before the release of the movie and that week, I made every excuse for us to go run errands so that we can pass by Best Buy and I could play by myself or other kids visiting. That experience made the release of ROTS much more memorable than it should’ve been. That in addition to all the promotion going around, like the Burger King sweepstakes, toys, and every store had at least something referring to the movie. ROTS is also my favorite and this game compliments it so well.

Something you might not know which will make you appreciate the game even more was that the game devs themselves went down to the revenge of the sith set and spent a day with Nic Gillard and Hayden Christensen who even told the developers how he wanted them to implement his fast and heavy lightsaber combat. For me it's still the most accurate lightsaber to lightsaber game depicting the 7 lightsaber forms that were developed by Gillard himself.

Best Star Wars film. Great games. Great video. Thanks Matty. I grew up with the Ep. 3 game on Xbox and loved the hell out of it. I had already finished the game by the time I went to see the movie on opening night and I remember not knowing how anything was going to play out because this game had so much that wasn't in the movie. Getting to play through some of the best duels in the series, and playing parts that we never saw like slaughtering younglings was so badass even though my parents almost took the game back when they saw that. Plus the battle with Cin Drallig and Mace Windu. The versus mode was so much fun. The only proper Star Wars fighting game that we ever got. Then seeing the ending where Anakin kills Palpatine. Gawwwwwdamn. Great memories. Just played the GBA version recently (get it on DS, it has more content) and loved it as well. Really underrated games.

One thing that always stuck with me from the PS2 game was the fact that you could play through the final fight as both Obi-Wan and Anakin. Younger me thought the Anakin ending was awesome. Watching Anakin go full dark side and murder Palpatine and claiming the galaxy as his own. Chills.

These type of games do have a certain charm to them. I remember being disappointed, because back then so many new game were like Christmas. With devs pushing the boundaries of what games could do every year. This game seemed like a step back. I remember playing Revenge of the Sith back in 2005. My mom bought me the game one summer after having seen the movie in theaters and I had a blast. It was one of the times where I felt like I was in the movie (like 64 Goldeneye did). Although, I did notice that Padme had been omitted from the game, which I found interesting But the biggest surprise was the alternate ending mission you can unlock, which was revolutionary during its time. I can see where The Force Unleashed got its inspiration.

I had this on the GBA when I was younger! I loved it so much, I don't think I ever beat obi wans campaign because I got stuck on the level after you fight grievous, but I remember I beat Anakins story because I was disappointed that he didn't win like in the PS2 game. Being young and bad at games though I don't think I used many if ANY of the moves you are given, but it's been so long now, wow! The VS mode with a friend on PS2 was amazing as well . I remember being at a friend's house and beating him only to find out I was actually playing the CPU because I started the game too fast for him to actually choose, and we thought that was pretty bad ass that one of us could beat the computer haha

On the PS2 and Xbox version: Someone at Lucasarts must've showed George Lucas one of the Lord of the Rings titles and told him "this was how Peter Jackson and co presented their film epic in game form, let's go this route... but actually FIGHT Christopher Lee rather than teleport away". As for me, I too am a little more fond of the GBA/DS being akin to classic beat 'em ups like Final Fight (Capcom) and Streets of Rage (SEGA). And the graphics style reminds me of the various comics and The Clone Wars 2003 (minus the DBZ-Samurai Jack like action). Plus, that version didn't forget about Padme, a key reason Anakin fell to the dark side.

I had this for the GBA and it was one of my favorite games. I played it on the hardest difficulty, and even beat the last level as both Anakin and Obi-wan while holding the gameboy upside down because they said "thanks for playing! you even beat the hardest mode... now do it with the screen upside down!" and I wasn't going to do the whole game that way. Also, the GBA version is a *little* different because it doesn't have the spaceship stuff, but otherwise you're correct lmao

I thought the PS2 version was okay. The alternate ending is a highlight, but I think it made people think the game was more awesome than it really was. Levels were mid and enemies were frustrating, but I loved the lightsaber mechanics and the multiplayer mode. The Gameboy Advance version is easily my favorite and it’s such a gem. The DS version does have the higher quality soundtrack, but oh my god, the added ship segments mess with the pacing so bad and they aren’t fun. Also the game is clearly designed for an old dim Gameboy Advance screen where it looks great on and very overbrightened and oversaturated on anything else.

The DS version was my jam as a kid. Obi-wan’s path always excited me cause you could fight the clones and leave utapau in Grievous’ ship. Not to mention force heal basically made him broken. Anakin I found more of a hard mode cause he couldn’t heal as easily but his path was really satisfying especially the Jedi temple. And I’m afraid I have to disagree with the starships. They were amazing, there was a skirmish mode where you could select ships not only from the prequels but the original trilogy. Plenty of maps too, including Hoth. Honestly so much for a DS game I’m amazed it all fit on there
