He who wins the war does not write the history. There is a reason sympathy to Nazi war criminals and German army officers during the war are still have by many around the world. German general memoirs and diaries are still wide spread as "history" despite being bias and untrue in certain cases. I'm not saying that all Germans were involved in war crime but a large amount of them got away with it and ended up writing a part of our known history because the Western world was more damn occupied with fighting the communists then to bring light to actual justice. The 2nd world war just concluded into another war of proxy wars, where people are too afraid of nuclear annihilation to realize the truth of history, instead both sides of the iron curtain decided to employ Germans specialists, scientist, military leaders in their quest to strengthen their dominance over their domains. Allowing these German experts of the 2nd world war to continue to spread their tale of a more "palatable" version of the war, of how wehrmacht soldiers were not responsible for murdering civilians, of how Hitler was the one doing all the decisions. If the victors wrote the history, we wouldn't hear these things but these things are heard because in a way or another we were too pre occupied with the new war to remember the old.
