Great performance from both. I have used them for years. With the speed and weight of 115 grain 9mm, especially from the small, short barrel pistols, there is only so much expansion performance to be had without losing most of the penetration performance. These two rounds both had a good balance of expansion and penetration. Thanks for the video.
@ToolsandTargets

Yes . On one hand , from 3.5. - 4 inch bbl they would expand even more , particularly the UMC which is barely hiting expansion threshold from the short bbl . But it also shows that even " medium performing " 115 9mm from shortest bbls , will outperform Any .380 .
@robertkubrick3738
@robertkubrick3738 3 месяца назад
@@margarethouse404 Except the .380 might be the pistol you actually have on you when you need it. The difference in size and weight between my 380 and Micro 9 means the 380 is for summer fashion and the Micro 9 is winter fashion. I'd love to carry the 6 inch barrel N Frame S&W I have had more than 40 years...but there might be talk.

Looks like we waste money buying 20 rounds of premium "defensive " rounds. Buy the white box or umc and you can practice with it and still have some to carry all from the same box. Put these "budget rounds" up against "premium " outta that 3" barrel. Let's see what all that extra money gets you.

Actually , who took the biggest hit are the cynics who are categorically skeptical of the $$ of premium ammo as being all hype and price gouging , and thus use FMJ . At this price point , no reason to not use them . And feasible for those people who want to do extensive practice with with actual carry rounds . Are ( some) more modern rounds more better- er ? Sure . But these , and the similar Federal 9BP in plain white boxes , are " more than plenty adaquate " .

Really impressive, both. I wouldn't expect 115gn to get that penetration after expansion. Really nice. And for Remington to achieve over 1100ft/sec from a 3" barrel is stellar, too. Revisit. Thanks again for the tests. Someone was telling me (at a gun shop while I was buying my first 9mm ever, but not my first pistol) that heavier bullets have lower velocity and less recoil (possibly he meant felt recoil), like 147gr 9mm. I prefer the Winchester WB so I plug the recoil into the calculator for both and the 115gr shot a little lighter than the 147, lower recoil velocity and lower total foot pounds of recoil. Moral of the story is take every theory you hear at the gun shop with a grain of salt. The theory Almost made sense because my 1911 sure does rack a world easier.

When I decided to slip down to 9mm from the FUDD caliber and after watching so many videos testing Hyper (i.e. expensive) ammo and comparing to the WWB 115JHP I chose it as my EDC and practice round. Great idea for a comparison Tools! I love the Remington UMC for a less expensive HP ammo. I always keep a bunch in 9mm as well as a smaller amount of a couple of the premium sealed, nickel plated, brands. I shoot a lot of UMC though. Its great for practice and target shooting without going broke. Remington makes a FMJ in 9mm 115gr UMC just like the HP shown here. It can save a few bucks more for target shooting an plinking as well. It seems to have the same POI for my 9mils. Its good to see Paul Harrel was right about these after all these years as well. Thanks for testing and showing us this Tools. This is good news for many of us on a budget or fixed income folks as well.

Im glad to see these rounds performed well in your testing along with the Silvertips in the other test. I have the Silvertips in my primary mag and the white box jhps in my backup mag. The Remington green/white jhps vanished around here a few years ago, never see them in store. Even these Winchester 50 round boxes of Jhps are rare anymore. Federal Punch, Sig V-Crow, Ammo Inc and Sierra are mostly what you find around here and from multiple tests on youtube the ammo inc and Sierra in 9mm are terrible performers so usually just suck it up and pay 25 for a box of 20 Punch or Sig, was nice finding the WWB

One of the main reasons I enjoy your videos the way I do is that you don't just test "exotic" ammo or "race" pistols. I'm always pleased when you run a few rounds of ammo that us average folks can find on most any shelf be it in a big box store or a Mom & Pop hardware/pawn & gun store. Now that it is getting warmer, I'm more inclined to carrying my one and only 9 Minimal (a Taurus G2C and two spare magazines). First up in the ammo rotation for my pistol just happens to be Remington UMC 124grn JHP though, now that I have seen this video, I might have to consider the lighter bullets like you tested. I love the White box jhp. every since I saw your gel test results the performance was as good as the top tier defensive rounds at a fraction of the cost. I had been carrying the silver tips and still do but have a half dozen boxes of the white box on hand as well. the best part of the white box in my opinion is you can afford to practice regularly with your carry ammo. not sure what the UMC pricing is, I'm partial to Winchester but I have to give credit to Remington because they also make a good product. I'm not a metal urgist but I do bond ammo every day and normally a better quality cleaner blend of lead will give you the clean almost shiny appearance. I see some that has a very shiny mirror like finish and others so dull and grey to almost black appearance. as usual great informative testing!

Great job T&T. I use these alot as carry ammo. I have more premium stuff too, but usually I end up shooting vermin on the farm with my carry gun. I got sick of dumping $2 a shot hollow points into coyotes, skunks, etc. So mostly I carry these and xtp's. Xtp works great in flesh and blood.

It is interesting that a few years ago a similar test was done that resulted in the Remington having the superior terminal performance. I have no idea why, but, I think it supports your conclusion: Neither is spectacular, but, both can out perform fmj if they are what you have available.

Good stuff! I've shot a lot of Remington UMC and WWB fmj for target practice and have good luck. They seem to be loaded up pretty good. WWB is usually pretty dirty, so you get a lot of carbon fouling on the gun.

Either one of these would be perfectly adequate for self defense. The lower prices are a big plus. You can pay more but the difference in performance is not enough to make a difference. Thanks for another great video.

Thank you for doing this test. It's generally recommended to have at least 1,000 rounds put back. I have more than that in FMJ. But, I think it might be a good idea to have 1,000 of JHP too. Problerm is, they can be expensive. These two would be a good compromise between price and performance.

Good video. The Remington bullet came out in the 70ties and has been tweeked many times. It is a good bullet that handloaders can get in bulk. VV3n38 will give a bit more velocity. The Winchester bullet has also been tweeked to a really good design too. I would use these factory loads with no hesitation. They are in my magazines for my carbines. They pick up a bit of velocity, a little over 1300 fps from a 16" barrel. You might want to test those in the gel with a carbine.

good job on the video T&T, I'm thinking both brands would really zip out of a carbine muzzle. much damage to flesh at 50 or so yards. and likely better much better chance of a hit than a shotgun slug at 125 yards or even more.

I’m on board with bulk HP’s. You get more per box and sometimes cost less than the so called defense rounds, go figure. I use the UMC’s a lot. Now I know what they do in the Gelly. Thanks for that my friend. Great test 👍. The MC9 was also the star ⭐️ of the show with the ammo as well. CANIK great pistols! Be safe awesome stuff. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I have carried Winchester White box 115gr JHP for decades … Im not surprised at its performance.. Its not the velocity that determines bullet performance, its the bullets design to function at certain velocities

Great test, and it seems to indicate that the Winchester USA (WhiteBox), budget ammo out performs the more expensive Law Enforcement Ranger variants (T-series and Bonded). Having said that not sure if you’ve tested the Ranger One series (Blue plug in the hollow point).

To add to your opinion about the first Remington round and as to why it went further could also be because they were SO inconsistent and the extreme spread of the difference could indeed create A difference, along with your thought on why the extra distance, your first shot being on the high end of the spread and your second on the low side with the extreme difference, it is enough to make a difference for sure.

When I first started carrying, I used Winchester 124. After ammo shortages and everything, I recently have been having Remington htp on standby because I shoot carry ammo after it goes unused for so long and hollow points have been up as much $60 box.

The rumor for years has been that the white box JHP is the winchester silver tip without the silver coating or Nickel brass. From looking at them I believe it to be the case.
