On November 27, 1938, Irish tenor, John McCormack
gave his Farewell Recital to a standing room audience
in London's Royal Albert Hall.
Thus ended an unprecedented concert career of nearly
three decades. In this radio interview, he recounts his
winning the Feis Ceoil in 1903 with Patric Curwen and Gertie Miller

The popularity of John McCormack simply cannot be overstated. Standing room only crowds, some even at the rear of the stage. No amplified voice, no flashing lights, just John McCormack and his accompanist Edwin “Teddy” Schneider. Oh for those happy days of yore.

Thank you so much for watching and commenting!! You are absolutely right. I am an American, but I think the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, to me, puts a close on an era that John McCormack was part of.

Wonderful. It is hard to hear John's singing or speaking voice without tears sparkling. The vision-world of his music is captured here in his words. Thanks for sharing. Eve

Thanks for giving us this chance to Hear John speak .Brings me back to one of the best aspects of my childhood. His songs were played every day by my mother and she sang along--lovely voice she had too. It is an Irish gift.

What John McCormack was to singing was the equivalent of Thomas Moore (Composer) 100 years earlier. The irrepressible Irish Cultural Spirit!

The writer James Joyce, was also a competitor at that singing competition.

Thank you for commenting! Actually James Joyce was not in the the same competition. He was entered in the following year. He finished in 3rd place because he did not perform the sight reading part of the competition.

Gertie Millar started life with a broad Yorkshire accent - amazing what marrying a member of the British aristocracy does to the voice! Thanks for this, Mike, as for all you do for the memory of that superb aristocrat among singers, John McCormack. (Never seen the shot of his manager brother, Jim, before!)

Peter, thank you for your kind words! I enjoyed your comment on Gertie Miller! I hope you continue to enjoy my presentations. I hope, even in some small way, they keep the voice and artistry of John McCormack alive!!

Thanks, Mike, for the kind words! I found this on a CD and thought it would make a great presentation......I had a nice mix of pictures and basically featured the youthful McCormack with the older one to capture the breadth of a long and fabulous career. Hope you enjoy my other posts!
