Deanna Durbin sings 'Danny Boy' for Charles Laughton in "Because of Him" (1945)

As a tribute to Deanna Durbin, following her recent death at the age of 91, here's a scene from 'Because of Him' (1945). She's a stage-struck waitress who tricks a famous actor, played by Charles Laughton, into giving her his autograph without him knowing he's signing a 'Letter of Introduction'. Using this letter, she fools people into believing Laughton wants her as his leading lady in his next play. He soon rumbles her little scheme however and, finding her lacking in any acting experience, tells her she'll be ready to appear on the stage in a few years time. While he phones for a cab to take her home, Deanna breaks into song with "Danny Boy," causing Laughton to relent and make her his leading lady after all. This was their second film together, their first having been "It Started with Eve" in 1941. (From the 'Deanna Durbin Collection' DVD Catalogue No. DD06490.)

I was a little girl when I first discovered Deanna. She was 4 years older than myself. When she sang opera, I was thrilled. Now I am 87, and I remember how she introduced me to the opera world. I have collected every aria that Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo have ever sung. The "singers" of today mean nothing to me. I loved Doris Day of my era, but none of the recent performers. They make a mockery of the human voice.

The beautiful Deanna Durbin. My Grandma, Olive, named her only daughter Deanna (my Mum) after Deanna Durbin. This was in 1941 in London when my mother was born and when the Luftwaffe were bombing London. Grandma Olive, God Rest Her Soul, died in the late 1990's in Devon. My Mum, now Mrs. Deanna Soraya Annis (married to my second step-father Anthony Patrick Annis) is now 79 and Tony is 82 and they are happily married and living near me in London. Mum is still beautiful and looks about 25 years younger than her real age but I am so pleased that my Grandmother named her daughter Deanna after the beautiful Deanna Durbin.

They were great friends in real life. During WWII Laughton gave parties in his Hollywood home for visiting British servicemen. He would invite Deanna to come and entertain them as he considered her British due to two parents being British born. Deanna had relatives in Lancashire and had wanted to visit them during the war but Universal Studios prevented her from doing so. Instead, she recorded a rendition of "There'll Always be an England" for the British Empire countries in the 1941 film "Nice Girl?" She would often visit England in her retirement and no doubt visited the Laughtons when she did so.

according to Wikipedia, Deanna had auditioned to play Snow White, nine years before this particular film was made. Walt Disney rejected her because he thought she sounded too old - even though she was fifteen at the time. Snow White was voiced (beautifully) by the nineteen year old Adriana Caselotti. Casselotti went on to make a short cameo in a little known film called the Wizard of Oz, which starred Deanna Durbin's contemporary Judy Garland. (There's a bit in the Tin Man's song where a female voice sings out "Wherefore out thou? Romeo? " That voice is Adriana Caselotti aka Snow White). This is particularly interesting when you consider that MGM had originally considered making the Wizard of Oz into a star vehicle for both Garland AND Durbin.
