For many, an aircraft tug is an essential hangar accessory and Chino, California-based AC Air Technology offers a line of patented remote-control tugs on rubber tracks. The tugs were attracting attention in the outdoor exhibit area at this year's Sun 'n Fun in Lakeland, Florida. In this video, Aviation Consumer Editor Larry Anglisano took a close look.

Love our tug for our E50P. Fully loaded gross weight tug never skips a beat. Crawls thru snow and ice with little effort. Been using ours for the last 4 years without issue.. A tiny screw rattled out of the housing cover a year or so ago, so now the cover rattles like crazy. But overall the kids love sitting on it and driving themselves around the hanger. Fun for all ages

They do have a model that sells for $500,000 and you get a free Cirrus with that.

Michael B. I’d be happy with an older G2 for half that and forget the remote controlled tug. 😊

Very nice project. I especially like the control box and the lanyard attachment. At least you won't run the plane into something if your thumb / fingers slip off of the joystick.

how do have a patent on tracks im sure i could find prior art somewhere
@aleksandersuur9475
@aleksandersuur9475 5 лет назад
You can get a patent for pretty much anything if you word it right. But getting a patent and successfully defending it in court are two entirely different things, in all likelihood this wouldn't hold up if anyone was inclined to fight that battle. Not terribly likely, this kind of thing doesn't really need tracks, wheels would work equally well here. Tracks are good for not sinking into soft soil, that's the only reason you would use tracks. The front of your hangar hopefully doesn't have off road conditions, so honestly I don't see the point here.

That is correct. We have a T-mini that we just released but do not have on our website yet, the price for the T-Mini as Tracy explains is $2,750. Our T1V2 which is the next size up is $3,595.

@0:50 "We have a patent on tugs with tracks" ... unbelievable that they got that patent, where is Mark Cuban. That's like saying we have a patent on cars with wheels, ridiculous ! It just kills innovation, and at 77 pounds and $2,000 plus.... they need some competition.

Impressive product. I like how you took the time and engineering thought to make things modular and easy to replace. The hall effect sensor control also shows that you spend time on the details and quality components.

With the intention of flying my airplane and remotely spotting said airplane from the hangar with this tug, does it not make said airplane remotely piloted and therefore exceeding the weight limits of a UAS? Huummmm?
@mobiushelitime
@mobiushelitime 6 лет назад
As an R/C person for many years...what happens when the remote control system ( the signal) is intercepted and crashes your 172 into a 20 million dollar jet right next to it. Shit happens...just sayin...but otherwise pretty cool.
@Acairtechnology
@Acairtechnology 6 лет назад
Thanks for the concern, I’m sure many people are wondering the same thing. We have sold over 800 of these and have never had the signal intercepted or the tug go wild for any reason. If the tug looses the signal from the remote it shuts down instantly.
@Kimoto504
@Kimoto504 6 лет назад
The probability depends on the signal strength, frequency (or frequencies) used, communications protocol and of course how far the operator is from the tug. That last item is a huge difference between this and RC aircraft / ground vehicles. The pilot doesn't get very from from the bot, unlike the Traxxas or EDF SU27's hobbyists operate... If they did a good job with the first 3 factors it should still be pretty solid. Consistent proximity b/t the TX and RX (unlike the R/C hobby) just makes it just that much safer.
@fockwulf1
@fockwulf1 6 лет назад
If you've flow for so long then you should know that the modern 2.4ghz frequency and protocols are almost bullet proof. Also any standard radio equipment on a plane operates way outside of the the 2.4ghz spectrum. So there will never be an issue. The only things on an airport that are at the most risk of interference is the pilots keyless entry to his car and the remote opener for the hangar door. So stop trying to start shit for the sake of starting it.
@GriffDawg94

Cool, but that remote straight out sucks, make an app to control the tug via iphone/android
@Kimoto504
@Kimoto504 6 лет назад
Not everybody is proficient with smart phones or even uses them. Also, the remote is much more robust to impacts and weather assuming it has a good degree of water resistance, unlike most phones. And do you really want to lose the intuitive nature of physical controls that also don't require you to take your eyes off what's going on to look at a screen? Finally, the remote's got better human factors/ergonomic than any app ever will have. The app shouldn't replace the remote but maybe it can serve as an adjunct/additional accessory... assuming they want to go through the trouble and expense of developing, servicing customers for, and continuously maintaining it.

In an article touting this electric tug, "Interesting Engineering" by a "Kashyap Vyas," he states, "The Cessna 310 weights over 2,268 kg., a weight that is too heavy to move or maneuver by using sheer brute force by the help of a towbar." Here's a heads-up to a thoroughly clueless individual who observably knows nothing about what he is writing. I owned a Cessna 320B, twin turbo-charged 270 hp engines, seating 6 pax and capable of carrying 640 lb of baggage to boot; full IFR, AP and all the goodies and guess what, Mr. Vyas? It weighted 3,190 lb sitting on the tarmac and I EASILY PULLED THAT AIRPLANE WITH MY PERSONAL CLIP-ON TOWBAR!!!! How much were you paid to pen such outright disinformational bovine spatter? Did it enter your mind to go to an FBO and actually move a 310 or 320 to disprove the claim being made? I love gadgets as much as the next guy or gal, but I don't write articles containing outright falsehoods. Not everyone has a "Terry Hollands" hanging around to move their planes, but take a look at this performance pulling a military C-130 and understand any normal human can certainly move their own personal aircraft without the use of an electric tug.
