An easily removable and storable platform bed using 8020 under $450? Yes! I get asked more about my bed than any other part of my van so I wanted to show everyone how I designed and made the bed for our MTB adventure van. It's actually really simple, but allows me to keep it completely out of the way to use the full space of my van for bikes, moto, home improvement projects, or whatever else life throws at us and sets up/breaks down in a matter of minutes. Thanks for watching and as usual hit that subscribe button, comment below with any comments or questions, and if you would be so inclined to support the channel head on over to Patreon and show your support! Thanks!

Hey a couple questions. When you set your 8020 horizontal’s, did you attach them to the wall level or did you just do equal measurements off the floor? I don’t have the same van. I have a 24 sprinter but if I do equal height in all four corners off the floor.. I end up with a bed that’s almost an inch at a level.. just curious which approach you took. I.

The walls of the van slope so it'd be pretty tough. Honestly I thought the same thing in the beginning about having it adjustable but as long as you get the height right it's kindof pointless since it's removable within a few minutes.

Or you can get the Ikea Skorva bed struts. $15 each. I used 4. They slot right into the little oval holes which are the access holes for the sliding door track. Kinda great they built these with those holes on both sides even though they only put sliders on one side. Then about $60 of wood for slats perpendicular to the Skorva struts. Sure it's not as fun as playing with 8020 and all that. But it pops right out once you take the mattress off.
@Projectnortheast

My goal was zero wood other than the floor. Also those mounts are too low to allow bikes etc to be fork mounted under the bed etc. There are a ton of easier ways but I had all my uses for the van in mind when picking heights etc.

No roof fan. After spending nearly 20 nights in my van and talking to some people that have spent months on the road I came to the conclusion that 1 fan is pretty useless. To align the 8020 so it's square with the floor and the back upright. Without it the 8020 would be twisted as no 2 surfaces in these vans line up in any direction. It also gives it a little better structural integrity having the rivet nuts further apart.

yes plenty strong... the rear column is hardened steel. Nice design! I'm hoping to copy it. I'm just wondering if it was super difficult to drill the holes in the rear of the van. I know in my 2016 Ford Transit, that part of the van is made out of extremely thick boron steel and it was a nightmare to drill holes through it. On the Transit forums people call it no-drill zones. I didn't know this when I drilled into it but I was able to get through it with cobalt bits and stepping up through literally every single bit in the set. But it took all day. What did you do?
@Projectnortheast
@Projectnortheast 2 года назад
Best thing is buy some hardened drill bits and use every size you have to go up to the size you need. it was a bear to drill but got it done... if your prepared with the right tools it shouldn't be a problem but it definitely is hardened and tough to drill and regular drill bits won't work.

@@Projectnortheast also, one other thing... The typical plus nut that folks use for vans are 5/16 but that bolt doesn't fit the pre drilled holes in the l track. What size bolts did you use to attach the l track to the wall? Did you drill out the hole for the l track?
