Thanks for the video, very useful. I didn't understand how I could open the cap to insert the screws. With this information I could replace my old lock for a new one.
Me too! I’ve been staring at my messed up door handle like a monkey doing a math problem!! I gave up, grabbed the phone, three minutes later I’m a door handle expert! Thank you sir, keep ‘em coming.
I've been working at a body shop for a bit now and extra tips I learned was if you're painting the door, it's better to take off the mirror and belt molding (the trim at the bottom of the window) for a better paint job in the end. The mirror can get in the way, and if you're unlucky, the clear coat could stick in that gap between the door and the belt molding.
LOVE this. Thanks. Managed to prize off the cover and get to the screws inside. This was after i hit it with a hammer! Hey but once I calmed down- it worked - you tube making girl power possible 🥳
My guess is that once you’ve done it a few times, it goes a lot easier. I’m not sure about the one at work because I am having no luck finding the brass pin inside that small hole. Maybe ours has that Kwicklock style that someone else mentioned. The one we have is for the public washroom and the whole thing is looser than it used to be. The key needs to be tried between 2-10 times to get it to open. The boss says it needs WD40 and I say WD40 disperses water and that’s not the issue here. He also claims it’s because it’s getting colder, anything so the handle or lock doesn’t have to be replaced. Is this door handle toast or can it be fixed somehow?
Thank Bill, the door on my mums door room doesnt have visible screw and a little hole next to the plate just like that. Will give it a shot a little later
Great video as it's my first time putting in new door handles on my doors, but my old handle does not have that tiny hole, it has a somewhat of a hole but is solid that nothing can get thru , so I pried the cover off but it's doesn't come off , I see the screws but cannot get to them cause the plates are in the way ugh 😫
Good to know. Now once I take it off can I use a different knob that the grandkids can't open? This is on my back door and I don't want them to get out.
Question I’m not sure if already answered but can someone inform me whether or not a ‘lock’ handle and non one be swapped without removing the entire mechanism… In other words can just the door handles be removed and not the piece inserted between the door, will it function the same or cause me problems!?? Thanks in-advance!
So, how about a commercial lever with a removable chamber/lock which comes out easily with a 45’ turn of the key and a nail punch in the hole. Now I’m left with the handle, base plates on both sides and NO screws. I’ve been a carpenter for 25 years and I have never met a door handle I couldn’t remove/install but this effing thing won today. I have to tackle it again on Monday so I have the weekend to figure it out. Or tell them to buy a NEW ONE TO INSTALL 😁
I found silicone wedged inside the small hole 😩 I picked it off but I’m afraid it’s inside the cover around the pin and it won’t move, any suggestions?
I’m locked out of my storage unit, how did I do it then? Please and thank you because I’ve told my landlord a hundred times and he’s keeps saying he’s going to take it off but he’s taking his time while I can’t get to my items. How can I take it off so I can replace it then give him a copy of the key
The door handle I was attempting to remove using this method also has some sort of screw that cannt be removed almost like it makes it so you can’t take it apart?
Hi Bill, I'm curious about your usage of impact driver to remove n rescrew pan head screws. Is that your personal preference or is there some advantage? I only use impact driver for tek screws. Normal drill for everything else. But I'm also an amateur in this field. Please share your wisdom. Thanks.
So what can you do if the latch is stuck ? I have a door where the knobs been removed once before and put back on, now the pin won't depress the latch and the handle won't slide off so I'm thinking just straight cut the handle off as I'm replacing the door handle anyway
Does the door need to be open? Mine is jammed shut somebody kicked it in and the latch it was bent and the door got shut so I can't open the door from the inside or out. Please help
Nope for me. The first part about the pin isn’t true for all doors. In mine I finally figured out that there’s no pin, instead you have unscrew through the hole. Very different from what you show in the video.
