I’ve been painting and restoring vehicles for more than 40 years. I typically will wet sand the surface and have a bit of dish soap in the water. I don’t use DAs due to the circular pattern it leaves in the surface. Everything from body work to finish is done with blocks to insure a straight perfect surface. Cross hatch sanding for body work, straight line sanding for paint…although this person is extremely skilled and the results show!!
When hand sanding, what is the best way to tell if you have if you have sanded enough, but not too much when going from the 1500 grit to 2000 grit and then 3000 grit? It is easy to know when sanding with the 1500 grit is enough but I don't want to sand too much in the next two go arounds. I have been using a 3M compound but I still see scratches so I am thinking I need to sand more or change compounds. I don't know how thick the clear is and I don't want to sand more than necessary. Thank you for any comments you may have.
I would love to see a video of you showing the full process of bare metal, then primer , then base coat and clear coat … with all of the sanding steps. I think it would help people to understand more of what it takes to get a nice finish like you produce. Thanks ! And thank you for sharing your knowledge
Echt primer, epoxy prime, hi fill, do body work repairs if needed, block down all panels flat, buzz 400 to get block scratches out, finish anywhere between 600-1000 grit, cover up any bare metal rub throughs which you may have got from sanding with 1k primer, clean the job blow off wax and grease remover and paint base coat and clear !
As a 25yrs paint and collision repair expert this fella knows his paint finishes and how to get the best from it. Although factory paint on most cars has a little texture “orange peel”. So I have to match that. But many times I have had to buff all of it out and making it mirror finish on restorations I’ve done. It’s a lot of work.
@@maxly501 yessir it is. I just built 21 denali duramax black and it was a lot of sore finger tips. People have no idea how much work it is to rebuild n paint a car and make it look right.
Actually don’t mind orange peel. It’s normal factory paint process when sprayed. And if there were any future body work needed, wouldn’t it be easier to match the paint and texture with the orange peel?
It's easy but not show quality as the clear will not be perfectly flat - use a block through all grits, takes more time but separates the pros from the amateurs
I bet this guy can save a day of every miserable painter. Thats an exellent job, I wich I coud find one to here fix my car`s paint but they are all full of stories after fucked up paintjobs....Do you like to sit in an airplane :) ?
I would like to see how do You deal with burned in bugs on a front bumper, hood and mirror caps. I have problem with returning bug etchings after polishing sometimes. I do polish them out or even sand them and after ipa wipe down or heating a panel the etchings are back. It happens rarely but it is a problem that i cannot resolve. Have You ever had this problem? I am professional detailer for 7 years now and Your videos helped mi a lot with some issues. Thank You for Your time doing this great videos!
I painted my car bright yellow. I didn't get orange peel, I got banana peel ! I left it that way since the car has a book value of $1000, even in perfect condition.
I think there is a risk in sanding down the orange peel on new cars, original painted. They have just 130- 150 newton of paint thickness ….. the remaining rest of material is not a lot anymore .although that it shines like a mirror ☝️☝️💥
Hi, greetings from the U.K. I’ve never been brave enough to sand clear coat with a power sander, by hand and doing it wet. However, it still amazes me how effective sanding clear coat is at producing amazing results. It seems so counter intuitive to sand your car, but wow, it works just great - if you educate yourself first!
Is there a set amount of time the clearcoat need to dry before dry sanding. The guy who did a horrible job painting my cummins is saying it need to cure for 2 weeks before h will touch it. Thanks
very nice video but in my opinion is wrong to grind with soft backing plate because as we know the orange peel is hills and valleys, to remove the orange peel you just need to get reed of the hills to make a new flat level on the valleys height, if you have a soft backing plate you giving form to the sand paper so you grind and the valleys too, and you will tell that finally you took a good result but in my opinion and behind a screen i believe that you took off more clear coat that needed to take a good result, please tell me your opinion on this. Sorry for my bad english Greek man here :P
Where can I get that compound and polish! I've been doing it for years and was squeezing my phone watching the dry sand till I continued to watch. EXCELLENT job my friend. 👏👊
Tapi nek pihake menguasai mesti mikire gawe hal lebih besar to..... Wes tak omongi pentagon White house kui rak kuat gowo pangkat. Wonge meneng ngikuti politik ki 2 hal memang sadar kesalahan no 2 wedi resiko pusing opo takut resiko kekalahan kematian dll terkait.
Ooooooh my friend. Like automatically. 👍👍👍👍👍 Thank you for your great video. You are like Big Brother and Teacher. Keep going. Waiting for new video 🙏😇.
thank you friend, you are right, I only went with 1500 and 2000 and polishing in 3 steps, I am not a master of painting so I can't make a video about it. The next video that will be is the measurement of the sanded coating, how much it comes off.
Excellent and smart work. I will give it a try. Traditional wet sanding will take a lot of time for sanding and polishing. My question is how it works for ceramic clear hard clear coats.
Hello. I'm from Bulgaria and i follow your videos. I polish car's when i have free time. I tries with machine dry sanding to remove orange peel , but when I polish , I see deep spiral scratches from sanding proces. Why I have this spiral deep scratches? Reguards!!!
Monkey job, no professionals paint orange pill like this all 4 panels ! DA POLISHER FOR DENIB POLISHING NOT SITUATED, ONLY DETAELING. Polish pads, Polish compound mismatch, is not professional approach. ( metallic colors is very easy in polish even black).
After you’ve done 2000 sanding, is using a DA okay? A lot of people advocate using a rotary, I don’t want to get that far and my LHR21 doesn’t do the job.. Thanks
