Today we look at how to deal with a stripped front axle or hex bolt on a mountain bike front axle!
Mountain bike axle tend to have front axle's with hex bolts for the axle this can often get rounded due to the cold or over-tightening, this can make it extremely difficult to remove your Axle from your mountain bike.
I decided to try and remove the axle from my front wheel, it proved to be a right pain, however, I got there in the end! HUZZAH!
So how do you prevent a rounded hex bolt in the future? Well you can buy mountain bike specific tools for your bike to help with this, using things like a torque wrench is pretty decent, and having a good set of Allen keys is a must-have!
Ensure you have them tightened to the correct setting or just not too tight. if you're finding it difficult to remove your front axle from your mountain bike in the cold weather try warming it up first you can use warm or boiling water to ease it up, or you might end up stripping it, and in that case, this video might help you haha 😂

Booyah!! It worked just as you discussed in video. Thank you for good humor and great info!! My 6mm aluminum thru axel was stripped, so I had to use next size up which was an 8mm (none of my kits had a 7mm!!??), so I used a 1/4" hex key, ground down the edges to make a point, hammered the heck out of it with a 16oz framing hammer, once it was good and stuck into rounded hole, I used a 14" pipe wrench on the key and slowly applied pressure and it unscrewed as it should have in the first place. Thanks again!

This is EXACTLY the problem i have at the moment. Appreciate the enthusiasm and direction in solving the problem. Here goes nothing:) As you so eloquently stated, nothing to lose, it'll go back to the Local Bike Shop if I totally bugger it up. Cheers

Hey guys! Welcome back! hope you're all safe and sound. this video isn't really an instructional video it's more a tongue and cheek but a little bit of this is what happened to me anyways I hope you learn something from this and I hope it doesn't happen to you haha 😂

Thanks mate - this video just saved me heaps of stress. Whacked the hex key in with a hammer til it rent in a lot further and then it was easy from there.

Ahhh I just did this. Dumbass me I coulda swore my new bikes axle was a 6mm hex. I had to take the wheel off at night and couldnt see we’ll and the tool I used felt fine when I stuck it in and tested it. Low and behold it was really a T30 torx (rockshox Maxle) Doh!!! Insta strip. Got home and hammered in a size larger (T45) then what it was supposed to take and it came right out. Luckily the axle aluminum is softer then most tools. Ordered a new axle on Amazon and got it next day. The new replacement of the same exact axle now just has a standard 6mm Allen/hex. Torqued it to the minimum required spec listed on the axle. I can’t stand torx

did I understand it correctly? you used a much bigger Hex key to the already damaged area that just fit well enough to loosen it?
@TheNorthernRider
@TheNorthernRider 4 года назад
Johannes Nilsen indeed! After using various methods it turns out the the larger size Allen key slotted in and wedged enough to move the bolt, the funny thing was I actually had used this Allen key before and it didn’t work but it did in the end 😂

@@TheNorthernRider probably needed that removal of some to dhuf it further in i guess. But this method won't always works. The thing is to round it off some more then hammer in avihher tool for small stuff that should be a hex key. But does not always work if the bolt head it too damaged, then you need to drill it out.
@TheNorthernRider
@TheNorthernRider 4 года назад
Johannes Nilsen you are correct sometimes they can be drilled out however there remains the fact that the internal thread can be damaged then you would have to re tap the hole which then you’d have to replace the wheel due to the fact the thread won’t fit any conventional sizes for thru bolts 🤙🏻 there were other options of super glue and epoxy used and it was super stubborn however I did not want to drill unless it was the very last resort there was still a chance this would have come out and it did. With these things there isn’t always a correct way to do it it’s a case of whatever works man 🤙🏻

Thanks for the vid! I am currently stuck with similar problem, torx or bigger allen key just kept on rounding the hole... So the solution for you was big enough allen key basically? :D
@TheNorthernRider
@TheNorthernRider 4 года назад
forest_of_spades yeah absolutely man It just slotted straight in after bashing it, there’s a few things I’d say helped one being the lubricant and the Other warm water keep at it. And also if you look below there’s a comment from casual mtb he recommends a screw extraction kit!

@@TheNorthernRider Thanks for the reply, I have tried to bang in one or two sizes already but the bolt keeps stripping, I guess the thread of the axle is well stuck 😞 Once it made a horrible metallic sound and then I was able to turn it about 1/6 of turn but from then it is stuck and I am quite scared to use the reverse thread drill 😅 It is a week old bike but never had a through axle so I forgot to grease it 😅 I will try warm water, it is like a boiling water from a kettle on the thread side of the fork?
@TheNorthernRider
@TheNorthernRider 4 года назад
forest_of_spades yeah boiling water from your kettle mate it’ll soften up the aluminium, you’d be better off putting the bike on its side and giving it a good whack, alternatively you could also super glue the the Allen key into place to see if it will turn the bolt
@forestofspades
@forestofspades 4 года назад
@@TheNorthernRider Alright, I will try whack in a bigger allen key and pour boiling water at the thread side and then try to turn it :) I don't think the super glue will help because the hole is basically round 😅 Anyways, once I get back from work I will try once more and if it will not be successful, I will bring it to the bike shop most likely 😄 Thanks a lot for getting back and helping me, mate!

1:59 P as in Pitch, it's the thread pitch. M 15 means 15 mm which is the diameter of the axle.

How did you strip it? Was it user error or just wrong material or bad tolerances?
@TheNorthernRider
@TheNorthernRider 4 года назад
Johannes Nilsen during the winter the thru bolt got seized and stripped that being said these thru bolts are notorious for stripping and are really bad quality and this should have been changed long ago 🤙🏻

You’re absolutely right man numbers shouldn’t be important but I can’t make ten people laugh if there’s only 2 people watching! I’m always and have always been about entertaining and helping as many people as possible and I hope that I can do this for many more people, RU-vid is filled full of awesome talent and we have a great community on here and it’s great to part of that but the community is only good because we have numbers! Thanks for your comment though man I really do appreciate it and I hope you had a laugh out of the video!

Wrong. Pin wrench. Drill 2 holes maybe 3 to 5 mm deep on outside of bolt. You're welcome. Takes 30 seconds, no hammer, no getting mad. Get a pin wrench
