After owning this 1983 Cape Dory 25D for nearly two years, I finally haul it out to the boat yard to remove the old bottom paint and paint it fresh. I don't think these types of videos honestly capture the amount of work that must be done to complete such a job. I have a much deeper respect now for the people doing this for a living. Removing old paint is hard!
Thank you to my friend Bob for generously and sincerely offering to help with the hard work and for introducing me to Pat "Corky" Corcoran and "Chico". I'd also like to thank Dean, Daniella, Rolf, and Ray who I met at the yard for their valuable advice, use of their tools, and hearty encouragement. The boating community is full of excellent people and I hope to meet up with these folks again in the future.
Cameras:
- GoPro Hero 8 (An emergency purchase 'cuz I left all my other cameras at home and there were no suitable options with zoom. Ugh!)
- iPhone 6 (with four cracks in its lens)
Songs:
"Crops" by Telecasted; "Out on my Skateboard" by Mini Vandals; "Your Love" by Yung Logos. All of these via RU-vid music.
Merch!

Anything on the bottom is just hard work. Everything is pushing up and it is a work out. the bottom looks great for the age of the boat. The fact that it is faster is proof. nice job

You nailed it, Tom. That’s basically why the aft end was left for last; it’s the hardest. Thank you!

I can't tell you how much I have enjoyed the authenticity of your videos Owen! I recently purchased a 1978 Contessa 26 because I saw how hard you had to work on your CD 25d and knew I couldn't manage a bigger boat. Keep these videos comin'!

Being a yard smurf is not a lot of fun but it's sure nice when you get done.. It's really satisfying when you splash knowing it's all good down there.

That is some hard labor! Well done! She looks great! Regarding fiberglass repairs where you may want to apply gel coat, it might be worth watching Andy with “Boatworks Today” on the subject? He just recently did a video on the subject. I am suggesting this more as something to do in preparation for a future haul out, while relaxing with a beer. In the meantime, I am enjoying your adventure, thank you for sharing it,

Thanks for the tip and kind words! I've been watching Andy for a few years and as recently as last week. I need to fiberglass an old exhaust hole in the transom and I'll definitely be watching his videos for some guidance beforehand.

I think Andy just did an episode regarding epoxy and gel coat and a “tie coat” that was interesting. I am a total novice on such matters, but it was provocative to me.

Looks really good. I wouldn't worry too much about any imperfections below the waterline. The fish aren't as critical as us humans.

Thanks Jim, so true. I guess not even I can muck it up bad enough to offend the fish. Now as for the neglected topsides...

If you have tough stains or nicotine to get off, try SPRAY NINE, you can get at Walmart. Works better than 409.

sanding v. chemical stripper for removing old antifouling. why you choose mechanical removal?
@VoyageDreams
@VoyageDreams Год назад
Some time ago I was reading Don Casey's well-regarded book, This Old Boat. As I recall, he wasn't fond of chemical removal for various reasons (though I don't think he liked any sort of removal due to the labor involved). While I didn't consider the chemical removal option much after reading the book, thinking about it now I'm satisfied with the hard work of scraping the old paint. I don't know if a single chemical remover would work on all the many different layers of paint (What composition are each of them?), and this boat yard doesn't provide/allow water for rinsing the hull, so clean-up could be a real chore too. Anyway, there you have it. Thanks for watching!

@@VoyageDreams yes many ways to strip a boat. Practical Sailor has a good series on using chemical strippers.
