With the Yanmar 1GM engine removed from the boat, I'm able to access the fuel tank for removal, inspection and cleaning, along with the many old hoses found behind the engine. What I find while cleaning the tank is disconcerting, but it's all a part of getting the Cape Dory 25D prepped for the re-installation of the engine and, eventually, long distance voyaging.
Ooh, customized merchandise, how novel!

Owen, the big tube on top of the tank is the 'fill'. The next on over (medium size) is the air vent. The two on the back side are the fuel out and fuel return fittings. Yes, the grungy one is for a diesel cabin heater. ;8>)

WOW ... nice catch on the fuel cell. That's the problem with used boats ... you never really know what was done to the boat in the past!

Don't mess with the rusty flange until you are out of the water. Then be prepared to cut that flange off. Then throw it away. And, be prepared to get a new prop shaft. Sorry for the hard news.

If your tank doesn't pass the pressure the test, this could be a good opportunity to purchase a larger fuel tank. Your current 12/14gal tank is pretty small. If a 20 gal tank would fit, that would be a huge increase in range/capacity. well done.

think about replacing the stuffing box with a pyi shaft seal. they are dripless and high quality, I had them for over 20 years and no drop of water in the bilge

Your tank looked good. I really thought you would have an inch of goo in the bottom from diesel bug. Hope it passes the test.

Just watched the tear down of the motor and I wonder if those aluminum shavings got into the cam shaft and caused some or the scoring on the sides. Note: I know really nothing about engines.
