Man man hehe you were lucky wearing glasses... why not just disconnect an AC hose outside at night when no one is watching 😋.

i've never done anything this large of a job so just curious why not drop the subframe? Perhaps not possible without lift . Just curious- Great work - thanks-

@6thGearGarage 3 года назад
You're 100% correct, dropping the subframe would be the ideal way to do a job like this. If I only had a lift.... someday!

As far as I know you don't need a special tool to get that fuel line off - I have an e39 540i with the same engine and was able to just push the black plastic piece down and it popped right off. Maybe there IS some special tool, but I didn't need it for mine.

You're absolutely right. I went back and looked closer at it later and realized no special tools were needed.

Would it be easier to remove the whole front of the car?
@6thGearGarage
@6thGearGarage Год назад
The top piece of the radiator support would still need to be drilled to cut the spot welds @ 11:45, but yeah then you could probably unbolt the rest of the front for more room.

Sucked at the time but looking back, we laugh our ass off. We left the yellow dye that sprayed on the garage door as a reminder of that day.

u need 30 minutes to disassemble the whole front...would be much easier that way. by the way 11:50 these are not spot weld points, these are metal clips, that cover is actually glued to the radiator support in 2 places, it comes off easy u didn` have to drill it.

Hi, its possible to wap a a 1998 740il 5hp-30 into a 2000 740il 5hp-24? Just to drive around not worry about smog .. Thanks

I don't know from experience, but I'm betting the bell housings are not compatible. Also not sure the electronics are compatible. Then there's the physical length of the trans... if it's any shorter or longer, you're gonna need the matching driveshaft as well.

Is it possible to drop the engine & transmission out the bottom of the car? Granted all the steering arms ,etc... would need to be cleared. But if the car could be raised on a lift while leaving the engine on the ground, that might be helpful.
@6thGearGarage
@6thGearGarage 6 лет назад
Yes, I believe that is how BMW would do it- removing the entire engine/trans on the subframe through the bottom of the car while raising the rest of the car on a lift.

very good channel, great video. u guys seem to be some good ass buddy mechanics. id love to own this car with the diesel v8, but seeing u guys repairing stuff makes me think its actualy too much work. keep the videos up, very interesting! btw what are u guys going to do with all those rusted pipes?
@6thGearGarage
@6thGearGarage 7 лет назад
Thanks! I've learned that the 7-Series are cheap used because they are more expensive to maintain. Which rusted pipes are you talking about, All the rusty fluid lines attached to the motor? Scrap pile unless someone wants them.
@TheKasperlkopf
@TheKasperlkopf 7 лет назад
well its hard to tell what kind of pipe it is when i have no idea which goes where. i was just interested in how detailed u guys wanna renew/ restore/ repair. the car. cant wait for the engine disassembling video! (hope there will be one)
@6thGearGarage
@6thGearGarage 7 лет назад
We're parting out the car due to it having a salvage title and starting to rust on most of the body panels. So there will never be a restore/repair video ion this one :D If I part the engine out instead of selling whole, I will definitely upload that video for you!
@TheKasperlkopf
@TheKasperlkopf 7 лет назад
ahhh ok, seems like i overheard that. i wish u guys good luck with selling the parts. one more question: how would you value the over all condition of the car? because if i'm ever going to buy one i hope there will be better ones than yours :P the problem is that there are only 20 cars for sale in my whole tiny country and if the quality of the ones in my local area is bad i would have to check all 20 of those... at the moment it seems like a "sisyphos labor" as we call it to renew or even find a good car. (only 6 of the 20 available are diesels)

On a used BMW, especially one of this age, Maintenance records should be your biggest concern. Proof of cooling system and timing chain is very important. The suspension bushings wear out. Often the auto trans will start to malfunction when the cars get to this age. (This car had reverse issues.) Check for leaks behind the tail lights- there's a lot of electronics right behind them in the trunk. The rest of common problems are more noticeable: cupholders tend to break, pixels out on dash, broken glovebox, oil leaks on engine.

Could someone tell what should i do to my bmw 740il . it wont go reverse and lost power .. Do i need a new trans?
@6thGearGarage
@6thGearGarage 4 года назад
Possibly, reverse problems are common with this transmission.

I also bought this car for $300... doesn't run, I would like to sell it for parts instead of trying to get it to run.
@6thGearGarage
@6thGearGarage 7 лет назад
I only saw them selling around here for $500 to $800. I'll make more parting it out.
@6thGearGarage
@6thGearGarage 7 лет назад
Parting out is the way to go if the overall car isn't in great shape. I've made $3500 so far parting mine out. With a salvage/flood title, I would have been lucky to sell the car for $2k in the shape it was in, after I spent the time/$$ to get it running.

You guys are scary.. lowering the cradle with motor on it, and car lifted off the whole assembly, is how this is done. But wow.

Mike has a 2-post lift now, so next time we'll drop the cradle.

Wow no offense but seems like you guys did this the hard way.
@6thGearGarage

I'm sure the proper way is to drop the entire subframe and then raise the rest of the car on a lift.
