One of the things that I love about the Players series tele is that the neck doesn't have the think glossy finish like this. No sanding necessary!

I've done this to every guitar I've ever owned that had that high gloss neck finish. I can't stand it! You mentioned body chemistry... mine tends to make my hand stick to the gloss like glue. Not get slippery. I've always just used a green ScotchBrite pad, dry. I keep one in the case for a while and just attack the finish bit by bit over a period of time. Maybe it's not the right way but it's worked for me for 40+ years and l doubt I'll be changing anytime soon. If l ever manage to screw somthin up 'least l got nobody to blame but myself...

Same for me. IMHO, there's no need to remove the finish- just gently de-glossing it with a green ScotchBrite pad works really well. Goes from sticky/nasty to slicker than snot on a doorknob in no time at all, and the neck still has finish on it to keep it straight and happy.

Thanks for that video... One of my guitars is a Telecaster ~2003 and I just didn't enjoy playing it anymore. Well followed your steps, sanding down the back of the neck and omg the neck feels great now. Also took the time to remove the remain finish of the frets and it seems I now have a new Tele. You rock thanks and keep posting these, love it.

Davestar - nope, I think it's evident Dave reads and sometimes borrows from comments, hey he's no dummy. This is not an ego competition it is about trying stuff so we all actually have better playing guitars. Like the trick of using an exacto to clean finish off the edges of frets on maple boards, not everybody knows that but wow what a difference it makes -and it costs almost nothing. I noticed that Dave refers to the high gloss finish complaint of the unhappy guitar players is their discontent with it being too "slippery" I'd always thought is was the opposite, that being the high gloss was too sticky I use finger ease and Fast Fret on the fretboard and on the back of the neck because I prefer it to be a little slippery I wouldn't go sanding the back of my Les Paul and they all have glossy finished neck backs As for me I don't have a preference either way but I also don't sweat very much
@j_freed
@j_freed 4 года назад
Yes the squeaky clean gloss poly or lacquer surface can drag, and also nitro lacquer can become slightly gummy and adhesive. The best solution is to sand just the back of the neck and apply an oil and wax treatment, it keeps out grunge and dirt but the maple has a nice 'glidey slidey feel to it. You can do the fingerboard too but that's a lot more work and with tall skinny frets there's not that much benefit. A guitar doesn't have to look like a Relic to feel super comfortable and broken in. ** edit ** Phillip McKnight likes to do a light sand on his necks to take the sticky feel off the back, but he leaves the finish on and this is just a surface treatment! In fact he can buff the neck back to a factory shine later if he wants to. It's more reversible.
@j_freed
@j_freed 4 года назад
Richard Christenssen - I've always wanted to get a fat neck les Paul and sand the neck bare. Maybe I'll try the Phillip trick now that I think about it! Les Pauls are generally guitars people want to keep pretty, and they can be annoying about it (of course they pay another 3k for someone to make a Custom Shop one look 60 years old, so...)

@reginaldfitzpatrick8681
@reginaldfitzpatrick8681 4 года назад
On all of my bass necks, whether it be a satin nitro finish or glossy poly finish, I always strip the finish off down to the bare wood and add multiple layers of tung oil. That gives it a great smooth finish with nothing for your hand to stick to. Sanding the finish down lightly to dull it wont do much, because after a month or two of regular playing and it will come right back to a semi gloss feeling.
@mugginsdot
@mugginsdot 4 года назад
Reginald Fitzpatrick just a question to clear up my confusion In this video Dave refers to the glossy finish as being too slippery for players but I notice that you've said that the glossy is too sticky In my collection of guitars I've got both kinds and haven't paid enough attention when playing any of them to have a preference Do you feel glossy is sticky or slippery? Thanks for your reply in advance!
@reginaldfitzpatrick8681
@reginaldfitzpatrick8681 4 года назад
@@mugginsdot yes, I feel a glossy finish makes the neck sticky. For me personally I do not like a gloss finish on the back of the neck. I prefer the feel of the natural wood. That way there is less friction and resistance when playing, especially with sweaty hands The neck Dave is working on in the video is a "satin" finish, so it's not completely glossy. But I still find that it tends to create friction when playing

You may consider hand rubbing a light coat r two of Tru oil into the back of the neck. It's made primarily for gun stocks. Just dab some on your fingertips and rub it in real good. It wont make it glossy and it'll really bring out any figure in wood and protect the neck forever. It'll take a day r so to fully dry between coats depending on your weather. Oh yeah DON'T LEAVE ANY RAGS WITH THAT SHIT ON IT LAYING AROUND IN YOUR HOME. It can and will spontaneously combust.
@onpsxmember
@onpsxmember 4 года назад
@@FoulOwl2112 It'll protect the neck for a while until you reply some more tru oil after a couple of years. It's still way better than leaving it with no protection at all. Good thing you mention the oily rags, it's taken lightly too often.

That is an Old wives (luthiers!!) tale. Unless you are playing a willow whip, it won't make any difference.. the strings are exerting hundreds of pounds of pressure on the neck... @regimiro4888

@@mikecollins8241 Yeah basically this, tiny little changes are gonna minutely change the setup of a guitar but that's just kind of the cost of doing business. I'd say guitars more than any stringed instrument I've set up, basses always seem to like to do what they're told when it comes to tuning, intonation etc. Way more than any of the guitars I've had over the years. Intonation especially will always be pretty much the best approximation possible given that we set in from the 12th fret, on an imperfect instrument (and a slightly imperfect tuning system!!!)

If you are/were a Guess Who and BTO fan, you understand how Breaux and his jazz chord patterns found their way into Looking After Number One and other Bachman tunes. BTW, a truly underappreciated bunch of Canadian musicians.....Mr. Bachman and Burton Cummings and the guitar players who succeeded Randy after he departed. As much as I admire Randy's musicianship, the fellow that Burton recruited to take over lead was a helluva player as well. Those bands deserved more in terms of regard and recognition.....don't know that they've ever been inducted into Cleveland, but they should have been there a long long time ago. Makes me dream about Running Back to Saskatoon and those western Canadian State cities like Alberta. Oh, to be young again.....

Dave got a couple things wrong. 1) he is not removing the satin finish, he is creating it. The neck started as a gloss. 2) this is done to make the neck more slippery, not less. Most players that do this find a gloss finish sticky. The hand will glide more easily over a satin or bare wood finish.

@@damnyankeex1 -- The all-maple Fender necks don't get a fretboard and therefore must be shaped differently, so there's really no mass production advantage to all Fender necks having that "skunk stripe."

Hand oil. Years of playing and the oils from your hand is the correct way to oil the neck. Would you oil a baseball bat?

You could have killed two birds with one stone and used peanut butter and jam to make the neck a bit stickier.

Dave, any chance you can relocate your business to western side of Ontario Province? You're way too far east to justify dropping off my guitars so that you can use them for the show/channel and to improve their playability, plus we don't like Toronto much.....AAy? Like somewhere just north of Wisconsin and Upper Peninsula.....not as far north as Thunder Bay where the little weasel conductor Schaeffer hails from of course.

Blasphemy. He's using power tools. How dare you, Dave? I'm outraged, planning on doing a protest with more outraged people.
