Washing more frequently will also help. For the beginners in the chat- don't go 1 month without washing your hair. Get a steamer to keep hair soft. Tie it up at night bc locs trap lint. And brush them w a soft brush. Read your product labels and use ingredients that will absorb fully and rinse out w clarifying shampoo.

Sounds like the key thing not to do is use cream based products or any products that leaves film. Locs can’t be treated like natural loose hair. The locs will absorb whatever you put in it. Over time the buildup will become visible. Just oil the scalp and moisturize with a combination of rosewater and vitamin e (mix the two in a spray bottle). Maybe a detox will resolve the problem.

So many loc rules...I've been using conditioner since I started them a year ago and don't wash in sections. I had never heard that until recently. I just did my hair like I use to do my daughters when we started hers. She just cut her 4 year locs end of last year and didn't have product build up. Just lint everywhere bc she rarely covered them. Im glad you were able to get the build up out.
@Totallyhotchic
@Totallyhotchic Год назад
I feel like there are too many rules. At some point, if you end up having really long locs, you can’t cover it all the time. I think products do add to lint retention. Because when I was a loose natural, my hair would have lint at the base of my braids mixed in with product. So if lint is an issue, maybe look at what kind of conditioner or gel you’re using? 🤷🏽‍♀️

The resilience!!!! Yes your hair is looking much healthier!!! I use find a clearing and also a shampoo or was that promotes moisture & that is good practically clear when you look at it! (IE Carols daughter rose shampoo for example) I’m in my 3rd year, I have been using that specific shampoo for about seven months and it has been wonderful! Thank you for continuing to support the loc community by sharing your experiences and your tips! I was so afraid to ring my hair out in the shower when I’m washing it but your breakdown of the technique has me a little more confident to try it next time! 😊

*IVE GOT LOCS THIS THIC AND THIS (BELOW) IS A SOLUTION TOO* One, to get this shite out, do the baking soda (BS) and apple cider vinegar (ACV) like so: pour hella BS into a tub, soak your hair and work in the BS into your hair, THEN dump the tub and fill with ACV, then take your BS filled (lol fr w/ the buildup) and dunk it into the ACV tub. It will fizz like crazy! This is what you want... by doing this the "wrong way around" like FIRST soaking in ACV and THEN pouring in BS, you miss the reaction WITHIN you loc. By putting the BS within the loc and THEN making it react, you WIN :D Two, *DILUTE DILUTE DILUTE YOUR SHAMPOO!* This is hands down the most important thing ever. NEVER put the soap directly on the locs, get a big like 42oz kwik trip cup and just fill the bottom 1/3 of an inch of the bottom with the shampoo soap. Then fill it all the way up with water. Then pour and wash in. It will FINALLY suds up like crazy :D . I use dr. bronners. People advise otherwise, but honestly, the worst it does is strange gray buildup that is easily taken care of with just one little cup of ACV 1 time a year... no big deal, and no creamy squeeze test EVER! Three, sleep with satin or silk pillow covers and wear a "head sock" made of silk or satin as well to keep the locs out of your face... Ive been doing this for 5 years and it works like a charm... Also, don't be like these people with long straight hair who let their hair touch anything and dont care where they put their head, always keep your crown clean and try to be mindful of WHERE you think the lint buildup is coming from! Is it the couch, the bed, the chair, the hoodie you like??? where? IK this is just a random youtube comment but save yourself Ms. Estelle's pain and do this :D ... Also, be rough AF with the locs in the shower. like squeeze them! ESP if you have thick locks. I cut one and tested its strength (1 inch thick ish) was that of a like 1000lbs rope. You gota wring (only thick ones) like a towel too! Ask me anything!

My locs are not as thick as yours. However I pretreat my hair before shampoo with half acv half water. I spray it in my scalp and locs and squeeze in my locs. I also use applicator bottles to dilute my shampoo with water. I use conditioner every once in awhile but I also dilute it a lot with water in my applicator bottles. I rinse really well as you said you do.

I do not use African black soap in my locs. Try Dr. Brinner’s Rise or Peppermint or Lavender shampoo. I know there’s a dispute about using conditioner. I don’t use it. I’m only one year loc’d. My daughter uses it and she is 7 years loc’d. I don’t see a need for it. My locs respond to jamaican black castor oil just like my loose natural hair did and that’s enough. Try massaging your scalp with your finger pads ti distribute oil and I bet your locs will look just as good as if you had used conditioner. I would not cut off my locs because of product build up unless you just want to go for a different look. Thank you for sharing!
