This could start a new trend of taking jars on holiday so that they get sun 😎☀️

In the country I came from doesn't have certain fancy appliances, like dishwasher and dryer, as in the West. We relied on the wind and sun a lot that are provided by our Creator, though the people there deny the God of the Bible. The heat and light from the sun have worked wonders for many things. The generations before mine had taken advantage of this invaluable resource for preserving/dehydrating foods, sterilizing, drying laundry, etc. ~Linda

Pinch runner...You are so right!! For years I couldn’t get the pickle/garlic etc. smell out of the lids so I would throw the jars away! Uggg! I was trying to order the smaller gallon pickle lids on line and couldn’t figure out the right size by the web page description! I tried clorox, I tried, Vinegar, I tried baking soda. I tried dish soap! Nothing worked! My sweet hubby came in after all these years of me suffering with these lids...and said try hydrogen peroxide! He put some in the lid and it sat over night and all the smell was gone!!! What? After all these years I’ve tossed the jars because I couldn’t reuse them? I do say, the ‘on line’ people should up there game on lid replacement descriptions...they are pretty vague, so we don’t know how to reorder lids for these different pickle jars that don’t need to end up in a land-fill if we can reuse them!!!

OxyClean... will remove the salmon smell from jars or any other smell. . Put 1 tsp in jar to be cleaned and fill with very hot water. Let it sit until its cool enough to rinse out. I put the lids in a bowl with oxyclean and do the same. EasyPeasy. 10 minutes tops. Its safe, just hydrogen peroxide. I do my coffee thermos, coffee pots or anything that gets stained or smells bad. Water bottles also.

I use sunlight in the summer but at other times I use crumpled newspaper ( only the black and white pages, not colored ads ) stuff the paper in the jars, and replace the lids, and the odor is gone. I learned this from a Tupperware rep years ago as real Tupperware will develop an odor if stored with the lid on, she taught us to do this when storing with no odor at all. Takes less time and is less messy.

My mom was born in 1934. She said they would put washed whites out to finish drying on the lawn/bushes cause the chlorophyll & sunlight would whiten them. Also, at bedtime I put my smelly (clean,of course) jar lids in a narrow bowl (so I can use least amt possible) and combine a little bit of hot water and equal amts of vinegar & baking soda, and let them soak over night; works great.

Sunlight works best for me ... the only time of year we get strong sunshine is in July and August so I save up any lids throughout the other months and then lay them out in the sun for a few good, sunny days. Usually takes about 3 days but the sunshine always seems to do the trick. The jars never seem to retain an odor so I just wash them in real hot water and let them air dry. Thanks for all your hard work making these videos. I really appreciate that you do this.

I have found pickled onions the worst culprits for residue smells in the lids. But I discovered that some jars with the coloured lids are the same diameter as the Mason jar lids. If you put a mason jar disk on it and hold it in place with the screw part you can place it in a vacuum sealer machine and it will seal it in place. You then remove the screw lid as it was only used to keep the disk in place to allow it to seal. The thread on the Mason jars don’t match the thread on the other jars but they usually line up to catch it to hold it in place. That’s all it needs. You can do this many times as long as you have plenty of disks. You know if it has sealed because you can’t get the disk off with just your fingers. Honey jars are the same diameter as Mason jars so you can get a good vacuum seal using a disk held in place with a Mason screw. Again the threads don’t match up but are compatible to just catch it to hold in place while you vacuum seal.

I used to always want the lids on my jars because I was afraid of dust or cat hair getting in them. I thought I had gotten the stink out so leaving the lid on was fine. then I served company water in jars and had no idea why people were whispering. Later, after they were gone, my kids finally told me the jars smelled horrible. So embarrassing!! After that I just leave the lids off. It's easy to just rinse them out before using if worried about dust. I know that's not the point of your video. I just wanted to share my stinky jar story. :)

Great info, thank you Heidi. Wanted to share my recent jar odor removing discovery. Anyone else have one of those stainless steel bars that removes onion & garlic smells from your hands? They work great for me. So with that thought in mind, I had a jar that'd held chopped garlic which I had washed multiple times but till smelled strongly of garlic. So I thought what about filling it with a strong baking soda & water solution & leaving in the stainless steel spoon I used to mix in the baking soda? I left it soaking for a couple of days. SUCCESS !!!

Often I flip the application of baking soda and vinegar. The baking soda scrubs residue loose, then the vinegar lift the residue away. I do this with my stainless steel pots, coffee mugs, plates and such. If I burnt a pot I may soak the pot with vinegar, heated slowly and allowed to cool, then put the baking soda in to break the burnt food loose.

Sun and baking soda are two of the greatest things to clean. I put my bath rugs out in the sun between washings (because it destroys the rugs). I couldn't understand the title of this until I watched it. I have a dishwasher and that usually takes care of it. It is the lid deteriorating that is the big issue. Good topic. Probably a lot of young folks had no idea that the sun was a great way to wash things (no water required). And, it refreshes the smell when you bring the item back into the house.
@j7ndominica051
@j7ndominica051 19 дней назад
Most of the smell is in the lid. When you put it on, it will go into the air that is inside the jar. You can just put some other savory food that is compatible with the old flavor. Sunlight at noon works. It can't get under the lip where some rust and grime are. Hydrogen peroxide works, maybe sodium percarbonate, which has longer shelf life. An ozone generator might be worth a try. Percarbonate might take the paint off start rusting the steel.

I have tried just about everything with pasta sauce jars. I get to where I can't smell anything in the jar or the lid. I put the lid on the empty jar and leave it for a day, and when I open it and smell...garlic. Do it again, after a day...garlic smell. Sigh.

Glass does not absorb odors 😉
@RainCountryHomestead

Some odors can remain in jars even when well washed. Many people complain of having a hard time removing odors from pickle jars even when running through the dishwasher.
@przlsc
@przlsc 2 года назад
In my experience this only happens when the lid is put back on. The glass itself isn’t porous enough to absorb odors. If that were true, canning jars would also have issues. Leaving the jars open and focusing on removing odors from the lids takes care of the problem.

@@przlsc Yes, I do understand that glass is not porous but you have a good point on the lids. I never could figure out why people would have issues with smell in jars for that reason unless the odor is clinging on somehow.

I like your content, but not having a lot of time these days, it would be nice if you can cut it short. Too much talking

Some people need all that information I am putting into the videos so I will keep doing that but you can always simply play the videos on a faster speed to get through them quicker or listen while working on other things like I do with things I am learning from and remember that all the extra information you personally do not need but others do is still free and I do not have special clubs that people have to pay to be a part of and learn from

Yup, if I have stubborn smells in some remaining tupperware it goes in the sun, works wonders!
