In this video I'll show you an easy way to remove shin-hanga Japanese woodblock prints (prints from roughly 1920 until now) that have been glued or tipped to backing material.
You generally want to do this for a few reasons:
1) the backing material is often acidic and can ruin the print
2) if the glue breaks but leaves just one corner holding, this can result in the corner ripping off the print
3) aesthetics :)
To do this you'll need:
two large stainless steel baking tray (with sides!)
distilled water (you don't want the minerals in tap water affecting the print
blotting paper (heavy paper for soaking up the water while you dry it flat

Uncarved woodblocks - e.g. shina or cherry - are excellent for drying and flattening prints. The wood slowly wicks out the water leaves prints permanently flat as a pancake.

BadIdea(TM) Nishiki-e prints use watercolor pigments as color, and nori paste (water-soluble) as bind. So... disregarding that the dirt/mold/etc. might stick forever inside the paper because of putting it inside water without prior cleaning, it's a terrible idea to submerge in water a water-based print, even though the pigment might be trapped inside the paper fibers because of the pressure of the baren used in printing. Instead, you could use a gelatinous substance damped and place it just in the corners to wet that specific part.
