On February 23, 2024, as part of a Black History Month celebration presented by the San Francisco Bay Times and The Academy SF, powerhouse vocalist Renée Lubin-a former longstanding star of "Beach Blanket Babylon"-was accompanied by renowned keyboardist Dr. Dee Spencer. They performed songs written by Black women composers, including "Dr. Feelgood" by the late great Aretha Franklin. The event was part of the "Divas & Drinks" @ The Academy event series, with the evening honoring dozens of LGBTQ+ Black women leaders and allies. Special honors went to playwright and activist Jewelle Gomez and Theodora Lee of Theopolis Vineyards, who is the first Black woman to own and manage a vineyard in California. A fun side note to this video is that it briefly captures Renée's husband, who was watching and admiring from the sidelines, and iHeartRadio star DJ Christie James, who was helping with some technical issues. DJ Christie headed up the After Party that followed Renée and Dee's performance.
