If Ren was in a happy place the night he wrote this 2 yrs back, then we would be listening to a happy tune. He wasn't, so we aren't. Ren never wrote these songs for release...they were his therapy. It's special that we get to see them revealed, and it certainly shines a light on the dark that many people face, and the feelings of destroying everything around them. The material he's currently working on will of course be very different, but with Ren I think you need to be able to accept the dark and the light.....it's what makes him an independant artist, where he has no label telling him to write songs to a formula. Personally I'm stunned by the amount of music he's created before and during his treatment in Canada.

Some fans seem shocked, surprised, and disappointed. It's as if they thought the "dark Ren" of 'Hi Ren' was a simple character and not an aspect of the man himself. Mental illness is ugly, folks, and it's not always sweet-sounding introspection and reflection.

As a Buddhist, I hear some very profound spiritual realizations in REN’s lyrics. When everything is dead, killed… What remains? If you say “nothing” you are wrong. If you say “something” you are wrong. If you open your mouth at all you are already wrong. Just be and nothing more needs to be done. Ren is on another level…

Art is meant to disturb those who are comforted and comfort those who are disturbed. Thanks Ren for the zen.

I remember back in the day, They Might Be Giants had this phone number where you could call and get an answering machine. They would update everyday with a new song. That’s kind of what Ren feels like with all these releases.

Hey Ren. You may never see this. I'm a military member. I found you a couple weeks ago and your song “Hi Ren” has became an almost comfort song. I have gone through a lot from being in service. I had doubts my whole life about me and my strengths and my capabilities as a person, a human, and the military can be rough on you. I had people who killed themselves, the hatred and jokes placed on me. It made me emotionally distraught. Everything from my childhood to my adult life now. I was the weird kid, the bullied kid. I ended up with anger issues and anxiety and suicidal thoughts. I coped poorly with the stuff. I felt alone. I ended up going to a therapist a year or so ago that I continue to do once in a while. And that journey of me fixing my problems, that may be worse than I'm aware I'm not sure, played in my head listening to that song. Seeing someone struggling with similar thoughts in such a unique and beautifully done way like you did. It's sheer badassery. You know this probably, but sharing your stories, your life, your thoughts. You're saving people. You have my respect and my support Ren.

It took a few hours to percolate but I'm totally on board with this track now. Ren always gets me sooner or later 🤦‍♀🤣He doesn't shy away from expressing the whole gamut of human emotion. He's the essence of punk, writes what he wants and doesn't let anyone tell him what to do.

I love all the old school rap/hip-hop quotes and references. Lots of people may not be familiar, but I love the integration of some really cool lines from back in the day and seeing them used together in a new light and era!

Idk why some fans are so shocked, he has told us he's been in phycosis before. Being chronically ill changes you, especially with Lyme. Lyme usually doesn't come alone and you're usually battling co infections too. I love anything red does ❤❤ this is a good song!

I don't think anyone expected this from a song called Masochist, but it is Ren for you with another "surprise". I am sure this will make many people angry, some bars were objectively provocative.. BUT in the cancel culture that we live where everything is filtered by "politically correct" speech patterns good on Ren for not flinching from possible reactions to this song. Personally I like this side of Ren. Not afraid to "go there". After the hype train of Hi Ren, he could've removed this one from the album as it is not an easy song to swallow. I found "Hi Ren" tonight and it's easily the best, most well-performed, beautiful and pieces of art in modern history. I listened to it multiple times in a row, finally time to see what else Ren has done and THEN I FIND THIS FUCKING BANGER? Yeah, can already tell I'm looking at one of the most talented humans to have lived so far.

What I find so cool about this track is that on the surface it is so loco and dark, while at the same time there is a reference to Zen Buddhism. The Chinese Zen master Linji of Zen Buddhism says If you meet your parents, kill them! If you meet the patriarchs, kill them! If you meet the Buddha, kill him! Which roughly means that you must break down all illusions, be in the present and drop attachments to the past and future. In this way one achieves nirvana, which Ren also refers to. Well at least that's my interpretation haha!

It’s the contrast between dark lyrics and bouncy vibe that I love about this.

It makes you think. If we were to purge the world and start again would anything really be different, or would we end up in the same place (like Animal Farm). The only thing we can really change is what we control and that really is ourselves. Those changes often come with self-inflicted pain. At best, the pain of disciple. At worst, the severing of relationships. So, at some level you have to Masochist to change and grow. Ironically, you have to be a Masochist to stay in the pain of life you are in. Love this blokes work.

The agression and delivery in the last verse is 🔥🔥🔥. There are always songs that get better as you listen a few times, but they usually peak out after 3-4 listens. This one has a very high peak I think.

As I see there is a clear Buddhist's meaning in this lyrics: they literally refer to samsara and nirvana and there is a line about killing all attachments to this life. Plus there is a Zen phrase which says "Kill Buddha" and it means you should kill ALL attachments including things that you believe in. Okay, I feel like everyone is talking about the lyrics and the meaning behind them, but seriously. THE PRODUCTION. The BEAT. Oh my GOD. It’s so WEIRD. I love your choice of beats and how you alter your flow to fit the nuances in each of them. All of those funky synth sounds and the subtle background crowd noises add so much atmosphere to this track. The snares and cymbals are PERFECT for this too - so abrasive, it totally gives me Beastie Boys vibes. I’d love to hear this as an instrumental. This is probably my favorite beat you’ve released. Did you produce this yourself? I need to know. I have a desperate need to know more about how you produce your stuff. I would absolutely pay for a membership for your channel if it would allow you to do “breakdown” streams where you go into the nitty gritty of how you craft your songs. Also, “take the curve of the Earth and I flatten it” is such a badass fucking bar. Holding the guitar like a gun, too. Goddamn.

One of my strongest emotions is anger and frustration with my health lately. As John Lydon said “ANGER IS AN ENERGY” - and anger can be fucking freeing, powerful and cathartic.

The details are sick. The very first two seconds were so nostalgic for me. Not many people born a few years after me know the sounds of a needle being placed on vinyl. A noise you always heard just before the music started. So dope man!
