This was the first complex live video Ren and Sam did, around 180 takes. The guitar player is from his band The Big Push, definitely a necessary side journey on your adventures.

You said a part of your journey is going to be getting to know him better. 😂 You have no idea the level of esteem you're going to hold for him. One of the reasons why many of his fans love him is because how true he is to himself and how honest he is. A level of honesty that can only come from believing that you don't have a future. There were times in the past 10 years where he genuinely didn't think he'd make it another year due to going so long without a valid diagnosis on his illness. An artist who doesn't care about money or fame because they're of no benefit to a dying man is a rare and beautiful thing to behold. Thankfully he's doing better now. Enjoy the ride!

The reason Ren set himself on fire (IMHO) is it's a nod to monks like Thich Quang Duc who carried out a protest tradition of last resort: self-immolation. He was protesting the persecution of Buddhists in South Vietnam in the early 60s. It's rarely done, but still happens today.

I agree that Rens time where he was forced out of society to deal with his debilitating pain gave him time to contemplate our world and through deep, respective thought, he has a lot of insight to share with us in very succinct ways. I hate he had to go through that anguish, pain, and helplessness, but it gave him knowledge; as he said, it gave him gold, empathy, and a deep understanding of living in the dark to learn to weild the light. (Paraphrasing from his 1 million sub video). Just genius.

Yeah, I think that Ren being highly intelligent, talented, curious, and so close to death for so many years gave him a lot of time to think about what is most important - both for himself (check out "Seven Sins," the introductory song of the "Sick Boi" album) and for society as a whole. In some of his old vlogs, he mentions books that he's reading, and his lyrics are evidence that he's well read. It's such a blessing that a stem cell doctor reached out and literally gave him new life. We are receiving the benefits of his thoughts, insight, and well-practiced talent. For many of us, it goes a step further because his articulation of his suffering and experience mirrors aspects of our own journey. It's comforting and sad. Bittersweet. I think the last scene is about the narrator joining the interesting yet bleak history of humans self-immolating as a form of protest. Ren mirrors the positioning of the now famous incidence of Buddhist monk, Thích Quảng Đức, self-immolating in Saigon in 1963 to protest the persecution of Buddhists by the American-backed government of South Vietnam. Rage Against the Machine licensed the photograph for their self-titled debut album in support of anti-oppression activism. (There are references to RAtM and lead singer Zack de la Rocha in Ren's discography.) Here, we see the narrator teaching(?) a hostage (w/a money bag on his head?) until he draws eyes on this "Other" - maybe to make him see. Unfortunately for the narrator, his action humanizes this anonymous Other and leads to him realizing he can't just blame this person, but needs to heed his own advice and look in the mirror. Like you said, I don't think he likes what he finds - that he's also part of the money game and he no longer wants to play. He decides to depart via protest. Obv that's just my interpretation, I could be totally wrong. Before you finish your Ren journey be sure to check out some fun, light-hearted or cheeky Ren. Lets face it... you were a Renegade pretty much straight away... you have fallen DEEP into this and I love it. Its not just the amazing music, its seeing that there are others out there that empathise and understand the messages thrpughout his music. Its incredibly validating to those of us that have possibly felt scared that there arent many other humans out there that DO get it and that care... so when we find them through this music in particular, it is a call to all of us. Once you are one of the people we feel safe with, we look out for each other, bring each other up... its amazing... happy to have you with us.
