I've never heard Barrington Levy before, but I immediately thought this song sounded familiar. I listened to Levy's Murderer, and knew I'd heard the beat somewhere else. I feel like it's Lauryn Hill or Sublime. It's naggging at me something' fierce...

God help all those "plagiarists" who had the temerity to steal words like 'the' and 'and' from earlier artists... ;) Ska and reggae have always been big in the UK, for obvious reasons, (btw, a quick aside, did you know that Bob Marley's father was a white Englishman? :) and over the years much of it has been homegrown, rather than exclusively from Jamaica. This was first evident in the huge ska revival that occurred in the UK in the late 70s and early 80s, where most of the bands were British and mixed race, with a British subject matter. Thus reggae, ska and later variants have been at the heart of British musical culture for almost 70 years. Thus, although the music undoubtedly originated in Jamaica and remains totemic to Jamaican culture, don't automatically assume that all the reggae, ska and dancehall influences in British music come from Jamaican artists exclusively. Arguably the most successful reggae act of all-time was a British band - UB40 (the name of the form you had to fill in to claim unemployment benefit). They were also the first ever reggae act to top the US charts. The Police too had a strong reggae vibe to much of their music and it's known that Ren is a big fan and has covered several of their 's and Sting's tracks. Not to mention the host of other acts that were HUGE in the the UK but more limited in success outside of Europe, such as The Specials, Aswad, Madness. Eddy Grant was British too, though born in Guyana._ The list goes on and on tbh... :)

Barrington Levy was huge in the UK. Under Mi Sensi was on repeat throughout the 80's & 90's and Here I Come was equally huge, playing a massive part in the UK rave scene as it was remade with Rebel MC and Tenor Fly into the legendary "Tribal Base" which got played by SO MANY back in the day. The UK has a very close connection to Jamaica and Sound System culture - it is basically what influenced our own rave scene in the late 80's onward, evolving into Drum n Bass that people know today

Hey, I think it's SO GOOD that you took the time to splice in that bit of Levy so Ren fans can see exactly HOW CLEARLY the title line of this song is taken/inspired from the reggae song. Hope it brings at least a bit of attention to Levy from a new stream of listeners who might not otherwise have checked him out edit after watching the rest of your video - no, but seriously. I'm still choked up and teary-eyed that you put the Levy clip in. In my mind, I imagine that Ren would be moved, too. It was such a simple touch, but you went out of your way to do it and idk, everything about that moment in your video just felt so *right.*

I think Sony must br crying for not keeping him signed... Ren's music knowlefge runs the gamut from Medieval music to Rap. A fan of Nate King Cole, Nina Simone, all the jazz and fusion artist as well as rock pioneers. We have such a mix in Ren the well runs deep.

Ren titles his songs how he wants to, with no concern of who might be offended. He doesn’t care what RU-vid or record labels think, his songs will still be heard as they were intended. That’s an artist!

Just a guess - but thinking Ren did this intentionally bc he was so pissed about all the issues with his last release Suic!de - and having it and people blocked if they even said the word. I heard a brief piece where he said - (paraphrasing) ‘we can all say murder.. and it’s fine, but not suic!de - that’s a bridge too far’!! I don’t believe he gives a damn about what the ‘big bois’ think or say - he’s doin’ his thing, and doing it very, very well!! (IMO)

To me, he's not looking for 'success' like many other artists. I think he uses the titles to show that he doesn't care, that he would rather reach one suicidal person than 1,000 'mentally well' people. He's similar to Tom MacDonald in their quest to bring light to mental health, display their talents that people told them they didn't have or didn't respect and send a message to the music industry that times are changing and being independent is the way to go.

Thanks for that Barrington Levy observation. I'll bet you are 100% correct! That's why I like his work, because all of the artists that I really love have a deep wide range of influences. If your only influenced by the guy you're trying to be better than, or only the genre that you play, then you will never break boundaries. No shame in influences. No one is truly original. We all get it from someone before us. We just breathe new life into it. Even the brick and mortar of the buildings we live in come from the the land that was here before it.

You clearly missed the point when you said similar things about song titling on Suicide. He isn't oblivious to this, in fact he's made some really interesting insights about how a song called Suicide gets curbed more by algorithms and content policies than a song called Muderer. Sick isn't it.
