Renault: Lost in Faith. Found in Doubt. [Fire Emblem: Support Science #10] Fire Emblem Blazing Sword

There is no character more mysterious in Blazing Sword than Renault. From a difficult to interpret backstory, to a peculiar set of base stats and growths, to a unique relationship with the game’s main antagonist, Nergal, Renault is not your average benevolent priest.

Had a time reading up on this guy and learning more about FE7, again. This is one of my prouder videos tbh. Hope you enjoyed. This video was requested, the next SS will be on Cordelia. Lastly, Renault's friend and young Renault are my own work okay pls do not steal tyvm.

No, I love this. I really do count Renault among my favorite FE characters. my first playthrough, I brought him to the final chapter because I felt like I was short on staff users and I had him fight Nergal, and... when I saw how much history he had with Nergal, I actually looked up how the support system worked,b ecause at the time I thought the convos would just open at random. I did my Hector mode playthrough, motivated by supports with Renault, Legalt, Nino, Canas, and Rebecca. All these years later, and it's Renault's supports that have stayed with me.

j1mjam_ I don't like Cordelia because of her mother issues. Not to get to personal but the whole interaction with Selena/Severa hits close to home for me. I know she has some good qualities about her, but I can't get over how awful a mother she is if she doesn't marry Chrom. But hey enjoy who you want. No h8, promise =)

Alex Oyinkolade That's all good fam. We all have our opinions. I can see what you mean though. I mainly like Cordelia because of her interactions with the first gen characters (Robin, Frederick, etc). I'm a bit rusty on the more specific details concerned with her parental actions when it comes to Severa.

Does Renault deserve to be forgiven? He's gone on a journey of redemption, regreted his past actions, helped others and risked his life to save the world from Nergal's corruption. He definitely deserves appreciation for his attempt at repentance. His character is just so good. Such mystery and conflict. Another reason why FE7 is my favourite Fire Emblem game.

Does anyone truly deserve forgiveness? I believe what makes forgiveness truly wonderful is that it is a gift bestowed upon the unworthy. To say "I have felt your grief, and it felt like my own," this should be the phrase we all take to heart.

He might have killed for over a century he never enjoyed it. He had a purpose and killed those who nergal deemed perfect for quintessance and then got his "friend" back. Its not specified how long ago this happened(unless im forgetting something) so presumably lived for many years with the regret ripping away at his soul. Immortality isnt a gift. Its a curse. A curse that means you will outlive all you hold dear while your regrets destroys you from within. Id say hes earned it.

It’s easy to make a forgiving to person in game like Renault, but how would you think if you were Lucius? Or some other orphans whose families destroyed by the bloody mercenaries like the war in real world? It will never be that easy to forget that kind of hatred. What the case should be is as his word to Isadora, as well as Athos to Eliwood after he killed Lloyd: keep your confuse. That makes you a human, otherwise you will be a puppet of killing.

He’s the Yoder of this game. He’s a bishop that is rather weak and comes near the end of the game when his usage would probably be slim to none. You can only unlock his A-support if you take him to the final (difficult) gaiden chapter, where his, literally, only goal is to develop support, because his light magic is useless there. But DAMN is his background rich with history and his stats bizarre for a bishop (clearly highlighting that he was once a physical warrior, and now has the bulk and build for it despite being a bishop). He and Yoder have always been my favourite bishops, personally. And these supports are totally worth it. It’s sad how the main characters and most popular ones have the blandest and most uninteresting supports (really, just take a look at that Lyn / Wil support, it’s, literally, just Lyn annoying Wil over a letter to his family) when the best support gems and richest backstories come from the characters you wouldn’t even notice or care about.

Renault is the prime example in the series to show how much support conversations can benefit a character. It's hard to care about late joiners in the pre-support days who aren't a part of the story, since you'll have a good enough team to not need them, and they don't have enough interesting about them as a character to want to use them regardless. On this note, I hope IS remembers that just because a character joins really late doesn't mean you have to limit their supports so much. Characters like Flora, Izana, Basilio and Flavia can have just as much to talk about as early characters do. Heck, even Path of Radiance had this issue to a degree.

"Does Renault deserve to be forgiven?" That's not for any of us to say. The power of forgiveness lies exclusively in the hands of those who he wronged and those left behind due to all those live he stole. I do know one thing, though, if Lucius had his way, Renault would be forgiven.

I feel Renault is an extremely tragic character. He lost the man he called his brother to war, and all he wanted was to bring him back. He resorted to horrible methods because he wanted his life back, but ended up never even getting to that point, and instead either disappearing, or dying as the game implies in a way. I like the ending of Renault killing Nergal, because it shows that he learned something along his journey, that he was wrong to resort to those ways, he could never truly remedy all of the pain he caused, but killing the man causing that pain stopped the pain that could happen to others. No, I don't think Renault should be forgiven, even though he just wanted to be happy and be with the person he cared for, but I do respect him for becoming more humane after his time with Nergal. He didn't have to do that, he could've stood the horrible way he was. But he choose to change. We can all change our future, even if it's only a little. That little could really matter in a way.
@Evilriku13

@xMatthewStar

I don't believe everyone deserves a second chance. Some won't use that second chance right, or will just make the same mistakes. I just think he caused too much pain for others for everything to be completely remedied, but I do respect him for trying to do what he can.
@Evilriku13
@Evilriku13 7 лет назад
I think there's difference between forgiveness and forgotten...ness(?). Forgiving accepts others mistakes if they've to do with yourself, but that doesn't mean he shouldn't pay for the consequences of his actions! One thing I dunno about Legault, cuz I didn't play FE6, is if he wanted to be forgiven by ACTIONS, not just by words, because actions do speak louder then words! If he truely tried with some engagements to "repay" for the shit he did, then I'd be more tolerable to forgive him and his actions then otherwise. If someone who says he's sorry for the shit he did to you, but don't let actions follow, then his words lack trustworthyness, BUT if said person saved your life and stays alive after whatever happened, I think that person redeemed a little forgiveness, because that person showed he changed in terms of morality, thinking etc.!

While watching this, I almost teared up. The music in the background throughtout the video is so good. As of my current run of Eliwood's story (Hard Mode), I will use Renault. As of my thoughts on the actual video, I like how Renault's backstory is fleshed out but it also helps show us on who he is as a person, a person that is struggling with what it means to be a person again due to what he's been through throughout his life. Hopefully this will help convince more people on using Renault in future runs of the game.

Stumbled upon this video and thankfully have something else to add, Renault's name in the japanese version, Renato, is a fairly common name in romance language countries, it comes from the latin name, Renatus, which means "reborn" or "born again", and considering the life changing circumstances the character has gone through, it's an appropriate name for him.

I'm so happy you made this video. Renault and Lucius is one of my favorite supports in the series. I'm glad to see your analysis of it, and if it's okay, I'd like to add one more point. I feel like when Lucius forgives Renault, he notices something. Lucius is the man Renault wishes he could be and this is something I noticed because Lucius looks rather feminine and is always mistaken as a woman. Lucius has probably dealt with this all his life, but for once his masculinity was noticed and even doesn't even know it. This is the best support science you have done yet. Keep outdoing yourself buddy.

I'd say Renault is deserving of forgiveness, and that he presents an interesting foil to Nergal. Renault served Nergal solely to get what he wanted, yet truly tried to atone for his actions once he realized that Nergal's magic would only create pale mockeries of people. He never abandoned the idea of getting his friend back in order to just sit tight as Nergal's right hand errand boy. Nergal pursued power for a good cause at first (getting his children back from beyond the Dragon's Gate) but forgot that goal as he lost his humanity, eventually just seeking power for the sake of power. He opens the Gate cause he only remembers that be desired to do so, not why, so he uses it to further increase his power. Though they are similar in sins committed, Renault always remembered his reason to do so, and took steps to atone for his sins once he realized the error of his ways. Nergal not only forgot his children, but did terrible things to them in his pursuit of power (not sayin g names cause spoilers). Also, excellent video :-D I'm glad I requested it (was torn between Renault and Raven, I think I made the right call).

The simple fact that he acknowledges his past and his mistakes, and is genuinely suffering because of all the pain he caused to others earns him Lucius's forgiveness, and mine. I believe Renault does deserve to be forgiven. In my opinion, the only people who do not deserve forgiveness are the people who have no desire for forgiveness, and sometimes I think even those people deserve it. For example, ***SPOILER WARNING FOR TALES OF SYMPHONIA*** Mithos Yggdrassil, that poor kid just wanted a chance to live happily with his family, but people wouldn't let him have that. He did plenty of things that would be considered unforgivable, and by his own admission, he didn't regret any of it, but he didn't ask to become embittered by circumstance, he just didn't know how to keep from it. He's the type of person who I say needs to be brought physically to justice, but their soul still deserves mercy. Renault received such mercy, and made good use of it. So yes, I say again that I believe he deserves forgiveness.

Kishuna is not Renault's friend, he is probably the Morph that Nergal made out of the quintessence and "humanity" that he took from Renault himself. I have long held the suspicion that the morph boss Denning from chapter 29 might actually be Renaults friend's reanimated corpse, which makes sense for the reason that 1: He is a skilled archer a good companion for a mercenary 2. he seems to lack the ability to think like other morphs suggesting that he was one of Nergal's first experiments. 3. He seems like a young lad which seems to fit the story of Renaults friend.

To answer the question of "Does Renault deserves to be forgiven?" I personally say yes. Yes he did commit evil willingly as a puppet for a more powerful and deprave master; but eventually he snap off his strings and lamented his past actions. Tried his best to redeem himself of his past actions. Regretted those actions of his that brought strife to so many others. Renault was even prepared to throw his life away for the sake of redemption. If Renault had not once shown some form of regret of his past actions. I would definitely be giving a different answer about forgiveness. Renault does not desire his actions to be forgotten or in a way... forgiven; yet he is desperately seeking to atone for his crimes and actions. To be seen as human again by the eyes of his peers and most importantly to himself.
@MacVanish

Just like Renault said himself. If I forgave him now, he would no longer be burdened by his past sins. Even so, he has spent his life seeking redemption and on the way helped others not to fall into the same hole he fell in. Renault is not to be forgiven, but to be a guide. A guide for others to find peace. A guide for people to the light. A despicable man, but a bishop at heart.

Now I don't mean to say that bald women aren't a thing, but I hope I'm not crossing too many lines into gender stereotypes by saying that one of the defining characteristics of the fairer sex is their glamorous hair, so… unless Wallace used to have a fabulous mane to go with the girly figure… he would be a pretty bad trap :v

I think that if Renault or anyone in his situation was actually genuinely remorseful and sorry for what they have done, they should be forgiven. Although it shouldn't excuse the actions he committed, I don't think he deserves to be punished for the remainder of his existence, so long as he is actually apologetic to what he's done. Forgive, but never forget. A solid Creed indeed.

Forgive him or don't, but his deeds lie in the past and have already been done. The important thing for him is to move forward, trying to be a better man. If Lucius, the son of one of Renault's victims, could forgive him and, himself, strive to walk a more righteous path, then it is in the capacity of anyone to do so. However, forgiveness is a choice and it should be left to each individual to make that choice. Whether others forgive Renault is up to them and whether Renault could forgive himself is up to him. Others cannot choose forgiveness for him or for his victims. I, personally, cannot really blame the man for what he did. He was a man of war who knew nothing else but the blade and whom had only one attachment. When he lost that attachment, the pain was powerful and he tried to right the wrong by doing the only thing he knew how to do. Also, let's not forget that he got manipulated by Nergal who has successfully been able to trick many good hearted people into doing evil shit. I don't think we can just forget what Renault did, but I can forgive what he did. I can understand, I can empathize and if he has cast aside his weapons and his killing intent, then it shows that he is trying to find a better way.

Yesssssss... I’ve been looking forward to watching this one since I found out about Support Science. Renault fascinates me, and I’ve always held him up as THE example of why support conversations are such a great inclusion. ...and yet somehow, I never put together that he was still working for Nergal when he killed Lucius’s father. That... changes things. I love this.

Ghast, I beg you, I PLEAD with you, PLEASE do a support science about Leon from Echoes. It's one of the most stunning and well-done series of supports and base conversations I've ever seen, and one of the best depictions of a gay character not just in Fire Emblem, but in video games to date. Look especially at the relationship between he and Valbar. You'll find something interesting about the both of them, especially after reading through his base conversations. Fantastic work as always, Ghast! I need more of these in my life, as a writer inspired by Fire Emblem since childhood, so keep it up! Character studies like this are my bread and butter!

Very nice insight on a character I just overlooked when I played the game. Also perfect video for a midnight-melancholy session on the consequences of choices and how to deal with them. It's details like this fleshed out backstories for a minor character - which most players (including myself) may not discover - that I miss in Waifu-Emblem. Though that doesn't mean I dislike them. It's two different types of dishes, really. Sugar sweet Waifu Emblem is just a quick, fun snack of Cinnamon-rolls with comfortable game-mechanics. And then there are the more plain, yet hearty sandwiches that are the 'classic' FE titles with as many layers of cheese as you can fit in between two slices of bread, which offer more food for thought than cookie-cutter characters (looking at you, Fates..). This video showed me that after having 2-3 cakes, I could really go for a sandwich for a change. It also showed me that I shouldn't write comments when I'm hungry. Well, my hope rests with the upcoming Switch title.

One problem with discovering Renault is that you don't have a lot of time to build his supports, you would have to field him in all remaining chapters
@BBHood217
@BBHood217 5 лет назад
It's true, getting Renault's supports is a bit of a puzzle. There are only three maps left, exactly enough for an A support, and they all have to be spent idling in front of Limstella or Kishuna, Nergal, and the dragon to get the supports.

FE7 was one of my absolute favorite games in the series, and the second one I ever played. I found myself always getting ridiculously interested in the characters. Renault was one that always felt weird to me. I never got all of his supports when I played the game, but as someone who always loves defensive magic users, I tried putting more effort into his stats with items the next playthrough I did. That was the one that allowed me to discover more about his character, and while I didn't find out as much as I did in this video, I found out enough and was allured by his mystery to consider him a favorite, and until now, I didn't even realize he may have very well been an inspiration for a character I've written myself.

To answer your question, the answer OBJECTIVELY is yes. Everyone deserves forgiveness so long as the remorse for what they have done is genuine and they have a true desire to change. But to most people, no, he does not. It's all too easy to look at someone's past regrets in a vacuum and just write them off as a poor soul who lost their way and just needs help. It's quite another beast entirely to look at their past actions from the perspective of someone whom that person's dark history directly affected. As people we can't help but be biased.

I remember playing FEH as a child and being completely indifferent towards this random character that joins you near the end of the game for no reason. Then little by little I began to understand how supports work, then finally got the whole picture when I saw that this character's backstory lies entirely within his supports, and adds such a big backgroud to the story of the game. This video is a perfect summary of how this character is relevant and deep, however brief his appearance in the game may be. To the guy who commissioned this, and to you Ghast: thank you.

I just had a thought. What about Denning? You know the one morph that's been made into a meme by the community. The only other NAMED morph that just came out of nowhere. He is extremely puppet like with his only tasks being a "commander" of an invading morph army and apparently a messenger as well. He is the one who delivers the message about the Dread isle. What if that message was for Renault? Which is why we find Renault on Dread isle at the end of the game? That may have been Renault's friend. Denning fits what Renault said Nergal made his friend into, a "puppet". Perhaps that "tranquility" Renault was seeking was the death of Nergal. Which is why Renault may have dropped the blade and exchanged it for light magic instead.
