As the demand for budget cars grows in the current economy, a new sub-segment has emerged offering 7 seater options at very low prices.
Based on the Kwid platform, the recently launched Triber is a case of similar, but very different. Edgy and modern styling make it stand out as very different to it's smaller sibling. Still measuring less than 4m in length, there are 2 extra seats placed at the rear, albeit at the expense of boot space. Using all 7 seats leaves 65L of boot space. At the other end, as a 5 seater there is over 500L of space available.
Clever packaging allows the middle row of seats to be adjusted for legroom when the rearmost seats are in use.
Powered by the familiar 1L 3 cylinder engine used in the Kwid giving 52kW and 96Nm you cannot expect rocket performance but the Triber handled freeway cruising at 120 far better than I was expecting. The Prestige version has 15 inch wheels and this created a comfortable and stable cruising experience, perhaps only affected by side winds on the long body.
Prestige specification adds many items like the 15 inch wheels instead of 14's, keyless entry and start, touchscreen infotainment system with reverse camera, roof racks and body cladding. Most importantly, the airbag count increases from 2 to 4. Perhaps the omission of Isofix fittings could be a negative for young family buyers.
Currently priced at R196 900, this includes a 2 year/ 30 000km service plan.
