Fun fact: Japan actually offered surrender before the nuclear bombs were dropped. The infrastructure was totally screwed so bombing more cities, nuclear or conventional, didn't make a significant difference. Their only condition was that the Emperor not be harmed, since he is considered a religious figure (similar to how the monarch of the UK is the de facto head of the Church of England or the Pope is the de facto king of Vatican City). The U.S. rejected the surrender and insisted that only an unconditional surrender would be accepted. After the first bomb was dropped, Japan offered another surrender offer, again, insisting that their *only* condition was to leave the Emperor unharmed. Then, we dropped the second bomb. The Japanese Emperor, going against all social convention, actually went TO the Diet and insisted that they offer unconditional surrender, basically saying that he would willingly risk his life and criticizing them for not having done this sooner. In the end, we didn't even bother with the Emperor. So the use of nuclear weapons was completely useless; firebombs would have done the same exact thing and we could have just accepted their conditional surrender without forcing an unconditional one. In other words, the argument that, "The use of nuclear bombs against Japan saved more lives on both sides compared to drawing out the conflict" is complete garbage.

I noticed each time buddhism is brought up, so is Shinto. Unlike with the west and Middle East, Buddhism was neither dogmatic nor really tried to wipe out all native religions. Being a Dharmaic faith it more easily integrated with the religions around it while still remaining to the Buddhas teaching. The same happened in Japan with Shinto and Buddhism. Its only really the ones of the Abrahamic religious tree that try to wipe out any competition.

I also suggest that you guys learn about world history. And understand that the United States gave the Empire of Japan notice upon notice and dropped leaflets from the sky, telling the Japanese people what was going to happen if they didn't end the war. Which the emperor refused to do. That's why the bombs were dropped.

A huge reason to why they used the atomic bombs on Japan was also due to an invasion of Japan would cost over 10 million Japanese and American lives. And if it were not for the Emperor Japan would not have surrendered after the second bomb.

Actually the Japanese government couldn’t have cared less about the bombs. They surrendered because they were at risk of being invaded by the Soviets. The Soviets would’ve stripped them from their cultural system so they went with the country that would’ve let them keep their culture.

Tokyo was never nominated as a choice of target, when the target committee met to discuss their target locations for the atomic bombing of Japan. The locations they chose were of strategic ecomonic and military importance to stop the Japanese war effort, not because of population density.

You mentioned shinto buddhism, but Shinto came purely from Japan, but later adopted a number of Buddhist aspects.He had an annotation that it was shingon buddhism though.

Tactical nuclear theory is really based off of first strike and response time capabilities. Ideally the bombs never are used, but if they are you want to be the first person to use them and in an ideal situation you would destroy their nuclear capability before they can they can retaliate in kind. So both nations involved in the Cold War sort of made a logical decision, for an illogical reason, but it is logical to believe if you have more nukes than your enemy you are probably more capable of retaliation, because the more you have the more can be destroyed while leaving your nuclear capabilities pretty open. Then the US got a good idea and decided if they put some nukes on submarines it would be near impossible for the USSR to destroy all of them, or even find all of them. That happened and there was a sort of submarine rivalry thing going on for awhile, eventually the US economy outlasted the USSR's and survived while the USSR toppled to the ground, resulting in a win for the US. However, by the time that had happened both countries manufactured ridiculous amounts of nukes in a variety of different delivery mechanisms, including artillery shells. The US and Russia still don't trust each other very much but they still agreed to destroy some of their nuclear arsenal if the other country did the same, so mostly the oldest, weakest, nuclear weapons get disassembled, leaving a smaller arsenal but advanced capabilities. Now there is no way to get rid of nuclear weapons, they are a necessary evil because once that genie got out of the bottle it was and will continue to be impossible to put it back, so nuclear powers opt to keep some of their capability ideally left alone and mostly purposed for retaliatory strikes. No nation is going to forfeit that power without a struggle, because everyone would rather take their enemy with them if they have to die. Now the US and the USSR/Russia are far from the only nuclear powers but they are by far the most powerful and neither country is going to forfeit such power though thankfully, brinksmanship is no longer really practiced, the closest we have is the possibility of N Korea or Iran deciding to do something insane as far as that goes, there is obviously the concern of terrorism but that is not something brinksmanship could do anything about so it is useless as a policy. Honestly we're lucky we didn't blow ourselves up some time ago, because when nations get a superweapon they seem to need to test it on an enemy, I guess the US did get Japan but the weapons used on Japan are not really the weapons we had even ten years from then. The fear of retaliation is probably too high for an actual nation-state to use them first, but you never know. So, my vote is keep our nuclear arsenals intact, it is somehow safer that way.

I think population density was the biggest contributing factor. Even back in the late 17th century, Edo had reached a million people and was one of the largest cities in the world. Nagasaki and Hiroshima wouldn't have been nearly as big.

I believe the reason they didn't drop the bomb on Tokyo was that it would anger the Japanese so much that they wouldn't surrender because they would have killed the emperor.
