As someone who was born in 1975 I grew up with The Spirit Dark and Lonely Water PIF. It was shown from 1973 and well into the eighties. The little black boy (Terry Sue-Patt) would later become famous in the late 70's and early 80's TV show set in a school Grange Hill (1978-2008) as Benny Green.

I have doubts about the "I've fallen and I can't get up" thing being in anime at the time as if I'm not mistaken that clip was from Inuyasha..and the English dub of it at that. So I think you may be a bit off on that for the time period..it may have gotten in anime LATER but I doubt it was as early as you think, at least in original Japanese and not dubbed in the US. Also..I HIGHLY recommend watching a compilation of all the Wilkin's Coffee commercials..they are all short as crap but hilarious to watch even today.

I just wanted to point out the word 'Meme' was devised in the 80s so the 'Ives fallen and I can't get up' men did not exist before memes were a thing. If anything memes just were more noticeable and caught on quicker because of the internet.

Fun fact: the term "meme" is also used among palaeoartists (artists who create art of prehistoric life), to refer to any trait depicted in an animal due to influence from previous art, as opposed to scientific accuracy. An example of a paleoart meme would be pronated (downward-facing) arms in dinosaurs, since dinosaurs couldn't actually do that in real life, yet so many artistic renderings depict them as such.
