It's so sad and pathetic that a huge company like Disney, says that they love this franchise and everybody who made it what it is, and yet they can't make one good Star Wars movie. Meanwhile here comes along an actual fan, and out-of-pocket makes a short 20-minute film that is better than anything they have done or these past several years

I enjoy that this Sidious and Vader still maintain a similar relationship that Anakin and Chancellor Palpatine had. Sidious is still a supportive father that wants the best for Anakin. Only they are both Sith lords, so that means extinguishing all light from him so that he may become even more powerful, or become more useful.

Imagine what Star Wars theory could do with a budget like the last Jedi, this show the fans know what we want more. It’s the same with games like mount and blade warband, the only reason it’s still popular is because of the mods for it.

It was Warner Chappell that was guilty. Lucas film was the good guys this time they said they had not wanted him to make money off it so we're pissed that they were making money off it. Lucasfilm had more right to monetize it than anyone but didn't.

I'm not gonna lie, I was seeing red when I heard Warner/Chappell and Disney Music was putting their fingers in that pie. As far as SWT was willing to share, yes LucasFilm stepped in and stopped it, but we don't know how. I'm betting Lucasfilm said "If I'm not making money off of this, no one is."

It wasn't disney that filed a copyright claim on this. It was Warner Chappell Music who filed the claim. Disney's name was on the claim due to them having a music contract with warner Chappell for the use of the star wars music cause warner Chappell owns the Star Wars music.

1:20 actually that was Warner/Chappell, a music company which handles ownership and distribution of film music with whom Disney has a deal (they pretty much oversee the music that Disney owns). They put a monetization claim on the video because part of the musical score made use of the Imperial March (which, apparently, is something which is not allowed (using music owned by someone else in original musical work without permission, I mean)). Fans got upset about this. Then Lucasfilm, with whom Star Wars Theory has discussed the fan film and what he could and could not do with it, caught wind of all this and decided to intervene. Lucasfilm told Warner/Chappell to lift the claim, probably in part because THEY (Lucasfilm) actually own that music, and it’s ok with them if it gets used like that. Warner/Chappell acceded, and lifted the claim.

As far as the Nintendo thing goes, from what I’ve been told(so correct me if I’m wrong). Japanese copyright law doesn’t allow things like fan projects. If you know and you let it slide you risk losing the copyright. That’s why Uranium got shut down, because it got too popular. There are a ton of projects that Nintendo definitely knows about such as Project M, but they don’t do anything until it gets too much coverage. Ones it’s in the common public eye, they are required to send a cease and desist.

I just need to state that just because someone is a fan does NOT entitle them to be able to use someone else's copyrighted IP without permission. Star Wars Theory went through the proper channels and obtained the green light from Lucasfilm. Apparently, Warner Chapel, the company that Disney farmed out their music licensing to, didn't get the memo, jumped the gun, and did what they had been authorized to do by Disney concerning unlicensed use of clearly identifiable music from the Star Wars IP. Original composer or not, there were parts of the music that took pieces DIRECTLY from the soundtrack and worked them in with the original elements that were written. It's one thing to take the melody of the Imperial march and layer it with an originally arranged backtrack. ARRANGEMENTS fall under fair use. But if you take a piece and copy it verbatim into your composition, then it is not fair use, and technically would require consent from the licensor. When Lucasfilm set the record straight with Disney/Warner Chapel, everyone was on the same page, and the copyright claim and monetization were released, and all is well. All because Star Wars Theory did go through the correct channels and obtained permission to do the project, and had abided by the rules LFL set forth. Had he not done this, he would have had no recourse, and Warner Chapel would have exercised their indisputable right to claim and monetize the video. This whole issue was a big misunderstanding, no doubt due to an internal breakdown in communication between the companies involved. But it got sorted, and very quickly at that. As to Nintendo... I am pretty sure that the fans making their fan games were doing so without first asking permission to produce something using an existing copyrighted IP. Whether they were going to make money for it or not is irrelevant. Clear use of someone's IP that a third party is not making money from is also a use of the IP that the owners are not making money from. Labor of Love does not fall under Fair Use. It is unlicensed use of someone else's product. As fans, the only right we have is to consume the official products we choose to be fans of or not, and like them or not. We neither own nor can claim any rights to the IP itself. If we choose to begin a long term Labor of Love project using our favorite IP, we must be willing to do so with the understanding that, at any time, the owner of that IP may shut it down on the simple grounds that it isn't OURS and they at no point granted us permission to use it. And. They. Would. Be. RIGHT. To do so.

Honestly, I find the whole "use the Force to catch laser bolts" technique to be silly and nowhere near G-Canon, and no wonder why! The fan film and the scene in The Force Awakens clearly copied the bullet scene featured in the movie The Matrix Reloaded!

Am I the only one who thinks it's sad that this was better than the last 7 movies in this franchise.

The fact that people think this is better than Luke's beautiful story in TLJ downgrades this film for me.

It's kindof a double-edged sword. It's a scummy move on Disney's part to be sure, but think about it: If Disney claims and monetizes this as an official Disney product, and all official Disney Star Wars products are currently canon, wouldn't that make THIS canon? Given Star Wars Theory wouldn't make any money off of this either way, I could think of no better reward for a fan-film than to have it elevated to official canon in the Star Wars Universe, which this absolutely deserves!

everyone in here crying about how much better this is then Disney... well guess what, this isnt an entire movie is it. this isn't plot based is it. Maybe you dont like the sequels but atleast you can admit that if it was this for 2 hours you would get bored of it, while with the star wars movies they at least try to make an apealing plot.
