Simple devices made of bacterial spores, glue, and plastic may allow capturing energy from evaporating water. This video explains the motivation behind our work and the exciting process of scientifically driven innovation. The contents are based on the publication: "Scaling up nanoscale water-driven energy conversion into evaporation-driven engines and generators", Nature Communications, 6:7346 (2015). dx.doi.org/10.1...

Renewable..........let's not ignore this; especially if it can be yet another solution to the challenges we face.

I wonder what the implications would be for doing this on a large scale in terms of needing to use a crazy amount of spores. Where would all the spores come from and would large amounts of them be dangerous to people or the environment? How long do they last? I wonder why they chose bacterial spores over plant or fungi spores or some polymer that might expand and contract even more. Really interesting work.

It's a beautiful concept but applications would be extremely limited. The potential energy density is quite small. Actually that's the problem with most renewables (besides hydro).

I've thought of doing something similar to this with an endothermic reaction on water.. causing it to turn to ice.. and then capturing the expansion energy of the water freezing... I wonder if that'd be feasible.

And if they want to use the energy of evaporating seawater then why not pause for a moment and think where the energy that evaporates the water comes from. The Sun. So why not just skip this unnecessary buffer and just harvest solar energy directly?

Well, that certainly is interesting! I don't know how much practical use it's going to turn out to be, but there's certainly *potential* for it to be amazing. As well as improving the HYDRA strip design, though, I can't help but wonder about improvements to be had from researching the mechanism that makes those spores swell and contract.

wait.. so spores aren't restricted to fungi!? :o wow, i learned something today
@CyberiusT
@CyberiusT 9 лет назад
maxime therrien It actually says 'bacterial' in the description, as well as in the video. But that's *still* not the end of the matter: some plants (ferns, for example) spore as well. That might be confusing - many people think fungi are plants. No, they're fungi, which are a whole 'nother order of life, kinda half-way between plants and animals.
@butterflygroundhog
@butterflygroundhog 9 лет назад
CyberiusT yes, i know that, but i always linked fungi with spores. oh and fun fact, fungi are closer to animals than they are to plants, and a mushroom is not a fungi but a fruit; the mycelium is the fungi

Given a fixed volume, pressure and temperature of moist and dry air, the vapour wheel cannot produce work indefinitely as it violates the second law of thermodynamics. Not that the video claims as such but I am caught in a thought experiment on why the wheel would eventually stop spinning in order to satisfy the second law. I think after every pass of muscle, the temperature in the moist section would drop due to heat transfer to the muscles and therefore condense the section into a dry state. Can anyone correct me if this is the mechanism on why it cannot turn indefinitely?
@markgiblin3138
@markgiblin3138 9 лет назад
Dejan Popovic You have to remember that all these laws on conservation and other laws relating to thermodynamics was written when? Somewhere around 1797... Since then man has had many leaps in technology and suchlike that the laws hold no water anymore, and the reason why should be a plain as the nose on your face. It is institutionalize teaching of an outdated concept of the way our world works that these laws are holding us back from progressing beyond these outdated modes of thinking. The sooner that these laws of thermodynamics are evolved to meet modern engineering standards, we will continually see these comments by people about breaking the funadmentals of thermodynamic clap trap. Did they have nano technology in the 1800's? No they didn't did they, maybe you could consider putting those outdated thoughts and research in to technology that has been around for thousands of years that do break the laws of physics...

Very similar to the Nitinol engines invented decades ago.
@LMF5000

***** Yes, only NiTi engines use a heat difference (not that different from conventional heat engines), whereas this relies on a humidity difference. This is a significant breakthrough because it harnesses an energy source that was previously difficult to tap into.

@@LMF5000 ⚠️ God has said in the Quran: 🔵 { O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous - ( 2:21 ) 🔴 [He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out] and the sky a ceiling and sent down from the sky, rain and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for you. So do not attribute to Allah equals while you know [that there is nothing similar to Him]. ( 2:22 ) 🔵 And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant [Muhammad], then produce a surah the like thereof and call upon your witnesses other than Allah, if you should be truthful. ( 2:23 ) 🔴 But if you do not - and you will never be able to - then fear the Fire, whose fuel is men and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.( 2:24 ) 🔵 And give good tidings to those who believe and do righteous deeds that they will have gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow. Whenever they are provided with a provision of fruit therefrom, they will say, "This is what we were provided with before." And it is given to them in likeness. And they will have therein purified spouses, and they will abide therein eternally. ( 2:25 ) ⚠️ Quran

Not sure about this... Reducing evaporation is not going to save our water supplies because it would also reduce cloud formation and precipitation - to make it net neutral. Not to mention that evaporation reduces ambient air temperature, so reducing evaporation could increase global warming.

In few days or months this technology will also go away just like we find many other water based engine, petrol from plastic etc etc. I would be very glad if this project can be kept alive and there should be tracking system like twitter / blog / forum etc for knowing the status of the project. As always this will not happen and this technology patents will be brought by big automobile companies just to benefit from the oppourtunity in monetary terms.

nunya biznez So, you're a racist, and isolationist, you don't understand how university funding works... and apparently have no idea what the Rankine cycle is. I also find the videos in your favorites list quite entertaining. I'll never cease to be amazed by what people will masturbate to. But hey, find some other videos to post your racist political rants to while keeping your profile entirely public. I'm sure there are a lot of other people that will enjoy looking up the perverted stuff you like viewing when you think we're not looking.

This is ridiculous. You are just converting the potential energy of the water to kinetic energy. You have to use at least the same amount of energy to get the water up there in the first place. What is the point of this?
