This goes out to all the people who have ever lost something right in front of themselves. I feel your pain and I'm deeply sorry for your suffering. I've lost countless items without moving. They seem to disappear into thin air and never return. I once lost a screwdriver while sitting at a workbench where there was nowhere for it to be hidden. I never found it again. So for that reason Madi I say to you, "Don't beat yourself up too much over things like this because it happens to all of us from time to time."

For the NON-SAILOR crew: The lazarette (also spelled lazaret) of a boat is an area near or aft of the cockpit. The word is similar to and probably derived from lazaretto. A lazarette is usually a storage locker used for gear or equipment a sailor or boatswain would use around the decks on a sailing vessel.[1][2] It is typically found below the weather deck in the stern of the vessel and is accessed through a cargo hatch (if accessed from the main deck) or a doorway (if accessed from below decks). The equipment usually stored in a lazarette would be spare lines, sails, sail repair, line and cable splicing repair equipment, fenders, bosun chair, spare blocks, tools, and other equipment. The name derives from the Biblical story of Saint Lazarus, who in Christian belief was raised from the dead out of the tomb by Jesus.[3] On the old square-rigged sailing ships it was located in the stern of the ship. The original purpose was to store the bodies of important passengers or crew who had died on the voyage (lesser seamen would be buried at sea).[citation needed] In modern shipbuilding and for powerboats of most sizes, the lazarette is the location of the steering gear equipment for the vessel. This area is particularly sensitive to flooding and damage, as the ability to steer during heavy weather is of the utmost importance to vessel safety. The lazarette also represents a vulnerability in that the large hull penetrations required for rudders and shafts for propulsion through the vessel's hull generally reside there.

You spent a long time trying t get that short length from the battery to the Renogy, if you'd used the negative lengths the other way around, you could have had the Renogy strapped to the battery with the writing the right way up? You could also have screwed that offcut vertically into the edge of that board next to the engine, with the fuse then hanging out over the Renogy. By the by, because it's all in the past, but hindsight from an observer.

The hook you removed is one of the points you connect the engine bay cloth/board there should be more hooks on the top on the underside of the lazeret hatch and more to the back and maybe one more in the front it’s to keep salt and water of the engine and cut out some of the sound

39:55 i believe those green terminals are a plug that can be removed to make it easer to insert the cables, if you google green terminal plug it will show you example of what I mean. great video

10 gauge will handle 40 amps. Yes, it is only officially good for 30 amps mains circuits, but if it has a bit of air circulation, it EASILY handles 40 amps without getting more than very mildly warm. The 30 amp rating is super conservative - as it should be - for wires in walls, surrounded by insulation, or for wires in a fairly full conduit.

I agree with you both. 10 gauge is not a concern for 40 amps, but the comments would be very aggressive in pointing it out.

@@john_in_phoenix Interestingly 12 AWG is capable of handleing 41Amps and 10 AWG can handle 55 Amps for Chassis wiring. It never hurts to oversize cabling if you have the option to reduce the voltage drop and reduce the risk of fire if a conductor is not able to dissipate enough heat in open air under a sustained load or in the event of a loose connection developing which is always a potential possibility. In that event larger cable can often help sink some of the heat from the loose connection which can reduce the chances of a fire developing.

Oh Maddi your mind sadly reflects the way I think, unfortinately for you I am 73 years old, if that is and insult then take this compliment, I love you , not in a wierd way (at my age is wish) but I can not get enough of your vlog. Keep them coming. By the way i have the same demons in my workshop who hide my stuff, even if I just out it down, you are welcome to some of mine from Australia if you want them, please. Balmar 75A.. thats nice! Even would allow a 60A DCDC if its not powering anything else. It looks also pretty new so I assume it has been replaced previously. Balmar is, in the marine world, well known decent stuff! In the future you might consider replacing it / adding a 24 or 48V alternator to charge a 48V battery bank. Or you can get rid of the whole Renogy and use a Wakespeed WS500. Allows you to use the full 75A, automaticly reduces current if the alternator gets too hot, supports LiFePO4 and can be integraded with your Cerbo.

Aye, I did that actually on the green/yellow 1/0awg lines to the inverter. My particularness with wire prettiness only lets me do that in the most desperate (or expensive) of cases. :P

If you mean what made me think it was working when it wasn't; I saw power going into the house bank, after hearing the engine lag when I turned on the charger, and I thought "huh, the alternator must be working, look at the load it put on the engine! Then I saw the power going into the batteries and that confirmed what I thought was true. With the benefit of hindsight, I know the power going into the house bank was coming from the starter battery. I still don't know why the engine lagged out when I turned the charger on though.

Nah, I got to be friendly with the marina office staff, and I know they tried, but not enough to be annoying of course. I think they tried calling him two or three times over a month or two, but never any reply. I obviously respect his privacy, but it made me a little sad. I really wish I knew her history better, but so be it.

Earlier in the channel, I experimented with more-but-shorter videos, and it didn't go well. The compromise was putting chapters in each video, so that the videos could be however long they turned out to be, consistent with how I've traditionally made the videos, but could provide break points for folks who wanted to break them up into smaller pieces. :)

Just found your channel. Love the content and your style. I know this video is 4 months old, and maybe it's in the comments or another video but I missed it, but what was the cause of your DC-DC charger not working? Or was it simply a bad starter battery? I'm about to install the same charger in my Cal 33, in addition to adding solar. The DC-DC will set me up to add LiFePO4 in the future. Thanks! -Jim

The alternator's regulator on my boat was tied into the old inverter/charger (Heart Interface) that I removed for the trip home. I thought it was still working in stand-alone mode, but I was wrong.

That's really interesting that you never met, or event got in contact with, the previous owner. I know you talked about buying the boat way back when, but I don't know if I knew this fact. Is that customary? Did you go through a broker? Or was it some special case where the owner was somehow out of the picture? I would think the previous owner would WANT you to know everything about the boat, especially after the sale (when it's safe to talk freely). I've heard of cases where a seller basically interviews and vets a potential buyer, because they don't want the boat sold to someone who won't take care of her properly. Anyway, I'm curious what the situation was here.

This is the only boat I've bought, so I can't really say what's customary. In this case, I worked with the seller's broker the entire time. I've heard the storied of sellers wanting to know the new owner would be good caretaker. In this case, I suspect he just wanted to leave the boat in his past.

i get that your getting pretty good at this whole wiring thing - but doesn't the rats nest get on your nerves, it certainly gets on my OCD, glad to see you're ripping out redundant systems, and the contortionist acts you have to do to get at it all, something i hate especially after breaking my back last year which still causes me issues, i would be redesigning the whole rear end but i know you will be going fully electric sometime soon, i wonder how much room you will have then under the cockpit? it's going to be very interesting

Hrm, intentionally I guess. I was so busy in the lead up to the trip home, that it was all I could do to just record video, I couldn't edit the video. So by the time I could start releasing videos, I was home. And oh boy did a lot go wrong. So not that I'm editing these videos, future me knows what's going to happen, and honestly I'm mad at myself about a lot of stupid mistakes, like not digging in deeper to the alternator issue. If I had the time to edit the videos closer to real time, there wouldn't have been any hinting because, well, I wouldn't have run into problems yet. Haha.

Not a fan of complex systems in a boat... a boat needs to be reliable, complexity reduce reliability (I know some would talk about Airbus vs Boeing and their success while being far more complexe... but it's different). Too many wires, too many connections, in case of emergency it's hard to compute and find the best solution...
