Thanks for the video. You will be so happy once you are fully electric. The engineers who designed this engine should physically install and remove the engine and change the oil and filter.
@MaxPivovarov
@MaxPivovarov Год назад
Oil from the engine can not only be drained through the hole of the oil probe, but also pour it through it. For this, a simple garden sprayer with a hose is suitable. Just fill it with oil, remove the tip from the hose, insert the hose into the opening of the oil probe and pump it.

As a mechanic, I always take the filter and pour oil into it and roll it on it's side to get the oil to soak into the paper filter so that it is saturated. This buys a little bit of time on that first start. I basically add oil and turn it on it's side until I don't see oil tumbling in the middle... but I then put the filter vertical to see if oil is at the bottom. I give it a second to see if oil does settle. the happy spot is when you get oil to settle, but don't see any when it tumbles. If the filter sit horizontal, I add more oil than I think i'll need and then act fast to install the filter, since you're turning it, you won't leak much if any oil because the filter paper will soak it up.

Yep, they never think about servicing engines when they fit them into small holes in boats. Nice catch on the water filter. You also get scuppers on fishing boat decks, just great big holes.
@TheDigitalMermaid

Really? Huh, the is it that "scupper" is anything designed to drain water off decks, a limber holes are anything meant to let water move from one place to another?

I wanted to let you know how your channel has inspired me. Long ago, in a much earlier video on the channel, I think you said something about following your dreams. Not sure how you expressed it but it did inspire me. At that point I realized I wanted to get a cruising boat. I mean, it didn't come out of nowhere. After all, I've been following your channel, so I already had an interest. But I finally admitted it to myself. Seeing you do what you want to do helped me realize that these types of things are doable. I'm currently researching how doable this is. Next -- you might find this weird -- I've actually enjoyed all your diesel engine stuff. Everything you're doing just to get home, after which you'll rip out the diesel, looks like fun to me! I like the fact that diesel fuel is much safer than gasoline, and I learned so much when you replaced your impeller and took apart the heat exchanger, etc. Great stuff. So actually this inspired me to want to maintain a diesel engine! Kind of funny, since your channel is really about the *opposite* of a diesel engine. But who knows... anything is possible in the future, so maybe I'll become an electric junkie like you. I find all your electricity-related content interesting, and I'm sure at some point I'll be messing with solar panels and all that.

Hey Charles, that's flipping awesome to hear! I started this channel to hopefully inspire folks to try something big. Doesn't matter what it is, just to make a go at something. So this is about the highest compliment I can get. Keep me posted on how you're getting on with your project!

@@TheDigitalMermaid loving the inspiration there - on the flip side of things, i am inspired but don't have the means to go get a boat, not sure i have the sea legs yet, maybe one day, never say never, i do have other plans so maybe when i am a millionaire hehe - it does make me wonder, and all these videos are great, serving as a fantastic source of information, but i think it would be wonderful one day to have a book on the subject of powering with electric (i'd buy yours Digital Mermaid), its definitely the way forward even though i still have a few reservations on the battery side seeing all these electric cars causing issues on board container vessels and carriers etc, so being on a small boat definitely qualifies for keeping batteries very secure and safe - i have seen the odd electric car a blaze and apparently they are near impossible to put out, i guess with all the plastics, but that's a whole new environmental ball game

i've worked on a few engines and hate a lot of what is designed, sticking an engine down in such a tight space winds me up, nothing is designed to be able to be worked on - the RAF have a saying which i always forget, but something like planes are designed by Graduates, flown by college jockies, and maintained by complete idiots - its them idiots with zero qualifications that keep the backbone of the RAF flying (but it is a lot smaller than it used to be)

@@patchmack4469 Cool. On my boat I had a generator, which was positioned in such way behind the main engine that there was no way to do even proper maintenance. What the heck were they thinking?? It was also very unreliable and at the end when it was broke I just got the damn thing removed, which was a pain too. I had to take it apart on the spot first in order to remove it. That in itself was a nightmare.

Frothing happens when the crank shaft is making too much contact with the oil, this is bad because it stirs up the oil and incorporates air into it. this makes the oil thicker and more voluminous causing even more contact with the crank shaft. Eventually it fills up the entire crank case and starts to cause other problems, it can blow out piston rings, head gaskets, I've even heard stories of it cracking engine blocks.
@TheDigitalMermaid
@TheDigitalMermaid Год назад
Oh wow, ya ok that's good to avoid. So it happens when the oil rises to the level that it's touching the crank shaft? Is the top like on the tip stick generally still below that level?

i love your explanation on engine running, you know your stuff, its a funny thing, i have worked on engines a little bit (dirty bleeders), i know over time they wear out obviously, its an odd thing isn't it, i used to have a Land Rover, that if left for too long, you might need to press the throttle a number of times to prime the fuel or it would fail to start and flatten the battery, there was also a manual pump on the side of the block but, isn't it strange that there is no manual primer for the oil, (and for those that don't know, the oil pump works as the engine turns, pumping oil to the top of the cylinder head into the rocker and over the tappets and down through the engine to keep it lubricated it would make perfect sense to have a manual primer, but the oil movement as the engine turns over is pretty much instant, providing level is correct (must check the car!) so its pretty odd, us knowing of wear and tear on engines that manufacturers never put in a manual oil primer OR do they know something we don't as i say i have worked on a number of engine, big and small, all having same principle, so perhaps this knowledge is very minor where we like to make it into something it isn't, wear and tear is a natural process of components running against each other, sure lubrication is necessary (oh er Mrs) well essential, no oil at all for a long period of time will mean certain seizure (and yes oil pumps do break), but i wouldn't necessarily blow this out of proportion - to check the components on top of the engine are getting the required oil, you can simply take the rocker cover off (not sure what you call it in US, a rocker cover to you is what we call the sill running under the doors) the cover on top of the cylinder head, start the engine and see that oil is running across the rocker and over the tappets on my old Land Rover, i used to check this often and decided where oil came up to the rocker shaft via a banjo bolt, i decided the whole wasn't big enough and enlarged it, and got more than enough oil
@TheDigitalMermaid
@TheDigitalMermaid Год назад
I know Cody (Cody's Lab) recently added an electric pump to prime his truck's oil. Part of me has to wonder though that maybe we're solving a problem that just doesn't really exist. Engine manufacturers aren't dumb, so there must be a good reason they don't worry about this.

@TheDigitalMermaid
@TheDigitalMermaid Год назад
@@ilanozana9652 The issue I had was that a generator that could put out a constant 6+ kw was going to be large, too large to fit anywhere other than where the engine currently is. With the boat's canoe stern, there's just too little space aft for equipment like that (another reason these canoe stern boats feel out of favour, although for me, their efficiency is a plus). I do still plan to have a smaller generator somewhere, aiming for 3~4kw range using a small ~8~11hp diesel. Even that though... I'll need to be creative to find a home for. :)
