Meanwhile that time in Hungary, like many other Eastern Bloc countries we even didnt dare to imagine a technicolor tv and was normal that neighbourhood get together to see the program at the flat whom had one. Japan is even in 60s overtook even many Western countries by miles.

@whereismikeyfl "The elbow thing" is a way of showing that all these clothes in this Renown "Ye-Ye" line can be mixed & matched, since they all make up a "neat total look". Thus, some of the models' garments can instantly be switched (via the magical elbow pose), and their outfits still go together. I am very pleased to see a really good quality version of this commercial on RU-vid, instead of the other lousy & incomplete 2nd generation ones.

Does the magical elbow pose work for non-Japanese wearers of the clothing?

Came here from Nam Jun Paik’s b&w rip of the commercial! He featured a different one in his artwork.

its funny because yéyé was adapted from English, 'yeah yeah', but 'ie ie' as it's written in katakana means 'no no'. 😂 I love it.

What about the french style music of 60's called ye-yé

So this phrase originated from rock music in English (“yeah, yeah”) which then became a phrase used in France in the early 1960s to describe a type of young female singer (the “ye-ye girls”), which then traveled to Japan as a part of their admiration of French culture. In fact the most popular “ye-ye girl” in France, Sylvie Vartain, did a commercial for this same Japanese clothing company, Renown, a year or two before this one. Hers is in black & white and shows ultra-‘60s op art patterns while she sings in her approximation of Japanese, which of course she could not speak. This is also on RU-vid.

I was told yesterday that women saying “no, no” quickly in Japanese (as this phrase also sounds in this commercial) is actually supposedly a teasing, sort of seductive way of leading a man on. She says “no, no” but actually means “yes, yes” - a common claim made by men worldwide.
