Just wanted to make two points... 1) Is the size of home & apartment anywhere near to same? 2) Do you buy only home or you can own apartment as well? And isn't that kind of middle path between home and rented apartment?
Not necessarily alone. People often have 2-3 people in the house, the two spouses or partners with or without a pet(s) and/or child(ren). That said, American houses are excessively large, and buying a "McMansion" house is understood as the American way of life. Depending on the city you are there may or may not be decent what is called a 'condominium' or a 'flat'. Additionally, these houses are usually far from grocery shops/markets/workplaces/dentists/schools/parks/entertainment, basically everything. So people spend even more money and time going to each of these places using a car. Meaning you are physically and socially isolated in your mansion and you can enjoy as much as you want inside, but any time you want to go out you have to spend money driving a car that requires hidden expenses such as maintenance, insurance, registration.
You should make a video on how to plan getting an academic or industry job during a PhD program and also provide guidance on some of the most useless PhD programs that students should avoid like a plague but I guess that can be a separate video. I can provide pointers if you need. Thanks,
@@DesiAmericanProfessor thanks for your reply. But there is a need of a video about majors that have very low employability. In other words they will end up as a postdocs or adjuncts all their life if they enroll into those majors.
now such a video is too risky for me. I need not get into unnecessary controversies. My own university will have those department and it will not be appreciated.
@@DesiAmericanProfessor That makes sense. It is more practical in a university setting. I just delivered a seminar and educated students about our major of environmental and occupational health and safety and how they can use it as a premed major to apply to medical schools as opposed to other majors as premed. I guess highlighting the employable majors without a negative connotation to other majors is a key,

I am about to finish my PhD in Europe and want to move to America, my only fear is the gun violence (40k people killed in 2023). How do people survive gun violence and crime in the US?
Your house expenses are exorbitant for Texas. I live in Fresno, CA and own a single family home. I pay much lesser (granted it’s not LA or SF), mortgage and interest 1500, property tax 260, no HOA, insurance 80, pest control 100 and landscaping 75 (total of 2015) I don’t pay cleaning. We clean ourselves. I wouldn’t even afford 4500 and I am also a faculty! We are R2 institution and don’t earn as much as R1.
@@DesiAmericanProfessor I have subscribed AllState Fire insurance which is required here in CA. I forgot to add $50 for American Home Shield for home appliances insurance. It is good for AC, water heater, garbage disposal and other plumbing and electrical items).
