Renting a Tesla on Turo! (MMM Show Episode 12)

My Producer (son) and I decided to rent a top of the line Tesla Model 3 and head out for a beautiful road trip, as a way of testing out both the car and the rental app/service called Turo.
Why is this related to personal finance and early retirement? Because if you can rent a vehicle easily when you need one (whether it's a cool one like a Tesla or just a workhorse like a van or pickup truck), then you don't need to own one yourself.
Or at least you can get by with just a simple commuter vehicle and rent specialized rigs only when you need 'em.
The music in this video was made by the producer, aka 2L&L: / @2l3l

You could buy the Model 3 for yourself and then rent it out part time on Turo. It would likely pay for itself in a reasonable amount of time, and you could still use it when you wanted.

For a minute there, I was worried you were going to give in and buy a Model 3! I’ve been fighting the urge myself since they announced the 35k version. I’m turning 40 next month and I’ve joked with my wife that a Model 3 would make the perfect mid-life crisis car, but I can’t justify the expense at this point in our FI journey. I get a government take-home car that I use to commute to work during the week, and we use our 2017 Chevy Volt for our weekend errands. So I may just rent one for my birthday and go to dinner with my wife, and not worry about making a purchase that I may regret someday.
@MrMoneyMustacheChannel
@MrMoneyMustacheChannel 5 лет назад
That's a perfect strategy! MAN, especially since you already have another brand new electric race car sitting in the driveway. The Chevy Volt is great! Adding a fancier car will do nothing to add to anyone's happiness. (although I do think electric cars in general are more fun and far less annoying than fossil cars)

Well done and looks like an awesome trip! I think it'd be cool to go camping with such a car. I use a similar service called SnappCar here in the Netherlands, where I both rent my car out, and occasionally rent someting electric to see if the new models have improved... a perfect antidote as everytime I feel silly for driving around a car that is the monetary equivalent to a tiny house. I actually really like the social part of renting out my car. People that rent and don't have a car themselves usually have interesting opinions. I have a few regulars that I see time to time and it's fun to chat for a bit. They show me how to appreciate features of my car that I long ago adapted to and don't at all notice anymore. Renting out my car so far hasn't been lucrative beyond paying for annual taxes and insurance (about 1k euro), it certainly won't cover the depreciation, which still surprises me how steep the decline is even if the car is over 10 years old. The cost of having it parked outside for days at a time. Luckily the repair bill have been minimal so far. And yeah there have been a few renter dings, but with the clear coat failing, I'm long beyond bothered. If only I'd get my hands on the renting statistics collected by the rental service so I can choose my next used car based on maximum renting potential.

The music and editing were the best yet! Great job guys! I especially liked the intro. Looks like you had a lot of fun, and all at approximately 1/1000th of the cost of buying the thing. :) This would be great for someone who always wanted to drive an extremely expensive car like a Ferrari. Do it for a day, ideally on a track.

I took a 2012 model S on a 2-3 hour road trip with my family, thinking it would cause me to want one even worse. Although it was the best driving experience I’ve ever had, and I was zooming at 85mph of silence, it scratched my itch and made me realize I didn’t want one all that bad. I was constantly worried about door dings, locking it at night, parking under cover, etc. I’ll take my 2011 Leaf simplicity for now!

Thanks, Water! I have mentioned it elsewhere, but electric cars (even the lowly Nissan Leaf) are a night and day improvement over gas cars in all dimensions. Faster, quieter, better handling, safer, more space, less maintenance, almost free fuel, way less pollution even if you charge with fossil generated electricity (I use solar myself). I am shocked that ANYONE is buying new gas cars since about 2016. They are like CRT televisions versus the latest 8k OLED flatscreens!

@MrMoneyMustacheChannel
@MrMoneyMustacheChannel 5 лет назад
In general (and please check for yourself here too) your own car insurance covers you for liability when you borrow someone else's car. Then, Turo offers insurance you can buy to protect the car from physical damage if you like. In the video you may have noticed that I chose to cover this second risk myself, but that is not a great idea if you can't theoretically afford to replace the car you are borrowing.

I thought the video was going to be that you bought a model 3 and decided to help pay for it by renting it on turo. I bet you could offset the cost quite a bit if you did that. Especially given that you don’t have any Tesla’s available in Longmont.
@MrMoneyMustacheChannel
@MrMoneyMustacheChannel 5 лет назад
I would definitely consider that, if I did buy a Tesla someday. In the past, Turo rates were way too low to make it worthwhile on a regular car (do you want to coordinate pickup and drop off with a stranger and then let them drive your car 100+ miles for only 30 bucks?) .. but for 100 per day and multi day rentals, id you could semi automate the drop-off and pick-up, that could work. I have met several people (even some who are good at money math) who claim Turo renting is profitable as long as you do it right.
@zboot
@zboot 4 года назад
@@MrMoneyMustacheChannel do you think there's demand in Longmont? Even though I work in Longmont, so there often, getting there from Denver is inconvenient. But if there's a market, I could be convinced to deal with it one weekend and leave myself a car at work to get back and forth for Longmont rentals.

Renting from Turo requires an insurance to be taken separately. neither my insurance with my personal car works or the insurance provided by my credit card would work. So, make sure you take insurance from Turo whenever you rent a car.

MMM, can you answer the following questions: 1) If you want to retire early, should you invest in tax advantaged accounts (e.g., Roth IRA/traditional IRA & Roth 401k/traditional 401k) or a regular brokerage account? 2) Also, can you answer how you access money in tax advantaged accounts before the retirement age without getting penalized? 3) Lastly, do you prefer Roth 401k/IRA, or traditional 401k/IRA? I wonder whether it's worth buying (more expensive cars) for the savings: you get tax breaks with a business vehicle, usually, the more you spend the less repairs you'll have to undergo in the future (you get what you pay for), buying an electric car in many countries is a way to save on gas (1/4 of the cost in many cases). None of this even mentioned in this video..

Hey MMM! I have I very important question(for me) that you could make a video about: A lot of young people(like me) have some savings these days sitting in their bank account, being eaten by the inflation. We are afraid to invest at this moment in the stock market, as all the big names (Buffet) are telling us that it is being over evaluated and it is gonna drop 50% like in 2009. The question is: What should I(we) do with my money now? Invest it in stock indexes like you did and hope that the bear will not come and eat 50% of my savings, or keep them in the bank account, to let the inflation eat 20% in 6 years? Or maybe to invest in bonds(like Buffet in times like this - I may be mistaken here)? Can you do a study here and compare the options? You can maybe model this year like 2007, when SP 500 was 1500 and see what would happen, in different scenarios. Thanks!
@jlbyrne10
@jlbyrne10 5 лет назад
From MMM "You’ll want to continue your regular investing program, but your asset allocation rules will automatically make you buy fewer stocks and more bonds. And especially look into alternatives like paying off your mortgage early - this is the time to get out of debt, because the getting is easy." See www.mrmoneymustache.com/2013/05/07/how-to-prosper-in-an-economic-boom/ www.mrmoneymustache.com/2017/06/20/next-recession/ Ignore the talking heads, keep investing at regular intervals. In the future today's market prices will look like a bargain, because the stock market always goes up over time (a fundamental of FIRE)

As I recall the legal framework is such that you are technically leasing your car to Turo and they are renting it out. They insure it. There are some horror stories out there but I think generally it's not an issue.
@steverogers6571
@steverogers6571 4 года назад
You select the level of insurance protection you want. If you select the highest protection then you only get to keep 65% of the rental fee. For the lowest protection you get 80% I believe. The renters can also purchase insurance or use their own if they can.

The first and only time we used Turo was to rent a Model S on a family vacation to California. Worst thing was getting pulled over for expired tags, being told that I had to sign the ticket and provide it to the owner. Oh NO! I had to pay the ticket myself from half way across the country. The owner did reimburse me with a little extra for my troubles but not a great first time experience. But I did learn that I love my Cadillac ELR so much more when it comes to style.

I turo my brand new 2018 BMW X1 M edition! I know, I know, what the eff kinda manic would do that? TLDR: Ask what the MONEY FACTOR is when negotiating with a car dealership. Well after 9 hours of tag team negotiating at the dealership with my now ex-bf and 2.5 yrs of a doomed relationship later, I realize that his ultra consumer LS had some not super good consequences / influences on me. Anywho! I started turo'ing my leased bimmer right away, as I still owned my '94 Mazda Miata (5 sp 1.8L sigh* so rare, miss that car; almost side-tracked into how I negotiated down to $4k with a cashier's check $500 under asking). There were plans to teach his teen daughter to drive a manual, but alas relationships built on shattered all-merican dreams, come crumbling down in a jaded stinky poo. Regardless, turo'd all the time with exceptions of one weekend a month to do something fun in or out of town. Sold the NA Miata, made $75. And after the lease payment, gas, and insurance, I "earned" $100/month turo'ing the bimmer; I'm probably forgetting other hidden-ish costs, whatev. After the relationship transitioned, I bought my first house 3.8 miles from my work. I wanna try biking everywhere (I thank you!) and resume turo'ing my bimmer, post-covidemic if possible, until the lease is up. Sell it back to the dealership and that which to biking for a year, see if I like it. In hopeful near future, I'd have to build my turo reputation from scratch as my middle man became a falling out with a friend. Yadda yadda yadda, moral of the story: Ask what the MONEY FACTOR is when negotiating with a car dealership. You are so very welcome! Also what kind of loan program or process, would you recommend for balance transfers to pay down debt interest free with a 'Needs Work' credit score? Asking for a friend who suffered a head injury that fueled a quarter life semi-crisis, pobresita. Love this turo idea tho! Step in the right direction to economic living. Your presence is a gift to all! Keep on, keeping on! Thank you!

Autopilot is a bad term that Tesla uses. It encourages people to think they can keep their hands off the steering wheel, even sleep or text. People have died as a result. More about it in this article: www.iihs.org/news/detail/new-studies-highlight-driver-confusion-about-automated-systems
@MrMoneyMustacheChannel
@MrMoneyMustacheChannel 5 лет назад
Ahh, but autopilot has saved many more lives than it has cost, because even a half-developed driving system can outperform the average human driver (we are generally slow and inattentive!) I personally like the name, because it reflects Elon's counter-corporate sense of humor. And they are actively developing it to become fully autonomous. Autopilot and autonomous cars are a fantastic technology I've been following quite closely for at least the last five years (if you have any software or hardware development experience I recommend watching Tesla's investor autonomy day presentation.) Then you've got Google's Waymo project on the big/sophisticated and cautious side of things, and George Hotz and his DIY open source (and yet surprisingly advanced) wildness at the other end of the spectrum. It's an amazing field!
